Great stoneworks images.

Karen, sounds like you got many nice plants....being on sale helps! I love the EE I got this year at WFF...also on sale....it's Mojito, Jo has the same one.....

Karen did score some gems and Robindog, love that Mojito. Sounds like a cocktail. Very dramatic. Must remember to order one for the GH.

We just found an orchid in bloom that I ignore totally, but every few years in throws up a spike which is thrilling as I am an Orchid killer. I had stuck it and a few others behind some pots on the west side of our house and my DH was stunned to see this big greenish stalk of orchids poking through a fern. I will post a shot later.

We got some rain but not enough. Picked a mess of tomatoes this morning. Going to roast and can them later today. Bell peppers are the best we ever had as is the eggplant. Dh made Eggplant parm last night. To die for. Patti

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

love mojitos!!!

Thomaston, CT

Love eggplant parm! I, too, am an orchid killer.....however, I do have a small one that Kathy (Boojum) gave to me.....still alive & green after 3 years...amazing!

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Robindog, I have a few from Boojum too, but I do a lot better with her Iris gifts. I have a rose that she gave me last June which I so hope makes it, but it is so tiny at the moment. She grows everything well. Here is our morning harvest and our mystery orchid as well as a few other shots. Patti

Number 4 is just beautiful.Th ank for the full view.

Thomaston, CT

That's one orchid I've never seen before....nice. What's the purple flower on the end? I'm very mad at my roses....many are budded, but none of the buds opened in time to take to the fair tonight....all I had was one bloom on Morden Sunrise, & I'm afraid it won't last until the judging tomorrow.....

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i think that purple flower is Lespedeza thunbergii - bush clover - i saw bbrook order that from Lazy S and got one for here:) mine is not in bloom yet - now patti am i correct

btw nice t haul - very jealous not a great year for them here not one jar canned yet.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Wha, so right, as that is indeed Lespedeza thunbergii Gibraltar. There is a pink one and a white one, but Gibraltar does the best for me each Sept.

Thanks Ge1836, but the garden has suffered so much from the lack of rain that it looks kind of sad. Sedums seem very happy and there are a zillion butterflies around them which I never noticed before this year. Roses starting up again. Best year for Ceratostigma plumbaginoides since planting it in 1983. I have masses of it with its intense blue flowers growing superbly now. But all my regular impatience got that horrible downey mildew and dropped all their leaves and flowers. I first blamed the deer, poor things were innocent. Dh picked more tomatoes this afternoon as they keep coming, despite the fact that the plants look pretty ratty.

Robindog, I will have to ask Boojum which one this one is. Good luck at the fair. I never have entered a plant in anything. But sure love going to see the flower judging. Patti

Thomaston, CT

I think all of our gardens suffered from lack of rain in July......some folks were bringing in dinnerplate dahlias last night...love them, but have never gotten such large blooms on mine....I think you have to strip the plant of all buds except one.....I'm not that much of a fanatic.....

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Robindog, I garden to enjoy the garden, not a vase with single display entry, but I do like seeing the shows, just not one to enter. Also kind of lazy to do all the fussing it takes to get the "perfect" entry and paperwork to get in a show. I stopped doing the dahlia a few years back. Too much staking, but I do drive out of my way a tad to go by a house where the owner has a wonderful display of them each Aug and Sept. They must do all the work at the crack of dawn or after dark as I have never in decades seen anyone out doing all the work. Magic. Patti

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i was a bit lazy on staking dahlia's - the ones i was on top of are nice - the others i just got to are a mess - hopefully they will run to the sun and straighten' up there act.

Thomaston, CT

I stake dahlias when I plant them......usually they require little care, but I guess they needed more than I gave this year.....Ordered some lilies from Sheepers today......

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Robindog, I am sadly lacking with my fall lily buying. I just haven't found any that I wanted that were not a zillion bucks. I will go re-visit Scheepers and a few other spots. I do have a new B&D cat which I did quickly peruse, but I will go through it again, as I will be sad not to have some new ones come next summer. Thanks for the bump.

I roasted at high heat trays of tomatoes yesterday that DH then cryovac-ked into small batches and froze. We left it chunky to add to sauces and soups over the winter. .Now I have a few cups of all the juices left in the trays which has olive oil and herbs in it, which I want to do something with as it tastes great. Not sure what yet. I may try to make a tomato sorbet with it. Wild thought. I will call our chef son. I might just poach some fish in it. It is to tasty to waste.

I a big batch of white chocolate macadamia nut cookies while in the kitchen doing the tomatoes, so I got little done outside yesterday. But DH took up the slack and continued the beginning of the fall clean up by cutting back a mess of messy DL's that had gone by and by taking down a large old choke cherry that was shading out some better stuff. I think he just wanted to get out his chain saw. He also vacuumed up a bunch of leaves that seem to be falling way too early. He also reseeded an area of the grass that our dear dogs dug up which is in a major visually important spot so it looks awful.

Cool outside today so I will go out to weed and do some divisions and begin moving some things around.

Oops, it just started to rain a bit so I guess it is now Lily bulb searching time. I don't want any of you to think I haven't ordered bulbs for the fall as I currently have 2364 ordered, just not many lilies. Thus far I only have 10 Lily Brasilia an Oriental @ $1.50 each = $15.00 included so I obviously need more.

Have a good day all. Patti

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Lets hear what you decide to get as far as lilies go.

Thomaston, CT

I ordered quite a few lilies....my standards, not Patti's! Many came from The Lily Garden, because I love the candelabra ones & they seem to have many in their catalog.....The tomatoes sound wonderful, I managed to make a few pints of stewed, but must do more tomorrow......

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

I need to look there too. Thanks. Patti

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

2364, are you sure it isn't 2368?

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Wha, Nope, unless they send me the wrong number. That is the # that I have ordered, but it will change as we always get some changes and I will add more once they Nov. sales start. And I don't actually count them as I plant them, well not the little ones. I am not that nuts, nearly I admit. I am really trying to keep the number way less than I have in many years, however I just add some lilies (22 bulbs) as per Robindog's suggestion from The Lily Garden. I will do a few more from B&D too. I so wish someone was doing a coop for fall lily bulbs. Patti

Here is the lily list. all more expensive than I often spend per bulb, but I got sucked in by their good shots. Never ordered from them before.
Avonlea
Big Bang
Dunyazade
Yellow Whopper
Quintessence
Sarabande
Flying Circus
Enjoy
Sapporo
Black Tie

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Nice list Patti.I dont think I have any of those.
I have taken an interest in Pot and Border lilies for this fall planting.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

ge1836, Where are you finding border lilies? I assume you mean those short ones. I have gotten some Pixie ones in the past from Bleek, but he hasn't listed any of them this fall. I saw a pale yellow pixie(Asiatic Lily Ivory Pixie) on Van Engelen for a good price as well as a couple of others, but I have a nice patch of them already. I am doing some more looking. Patti

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

The Lily Nook. Not the least expensive way to buy them tho. I tried a co-op this spring and ordered Ivory Pixie but they came up red. When will I ever learn.
4 You
Tiny Bell
Crossover
Tiny Ghost
Elgrado
Golden Joy
Sorry these arent in image order.

Heading off to the Nook. Thanks. Patti

Thomaston, CT

Glad you found some lilies that you liked, Patti.....Jo, those are lovely! I ordered Anastasia & a bag of mixed Orienpets from Scheepers....the red lily beetles seem to somewhat stay away from the Orienpets.....from the LILY Garden I ordered....Ariadne, Karen North, Peach Lace, Red Velvet, & Eurydice, plus Pizzazz....

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Ok, all done with the Lily orders. I went slightly wild. Who is surprised, but it will be grand as long as we continue to be lily beetle free. Fingers crossed Thanks for the sources. Fall 2012 bulb order count is now 2425. Patti

The blooms mature to a beautiful cream color.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Thanks for the pics. Doing the happy dance. Patti

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I cant wait to see your lilies next spring.

Thomaston, CT

And....all the other bulbs!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i have ordered 15 bulbs

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

And I was feeling lucky that a friend just gave me 6 very large noid lily bulbs.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Oh, Marilyn, 'Mojito' is nice! Too bad about your roses not opening so that you could take them to the fair. One of the special needs clients that I work with lives in a condo complex where there are 2 gorgeous rose bushes on either side of the entrance to his building, one pink and one orange. Well, just recently they started blooming out nicely again. Last week the landscapers cut them back nearly to the ground. I was so upset about that. Landscapers drive me crazy! If they wanted to prune them, I could have done a really nice job on them. Such a shame.

OMG! Patti, you're going to have an amazing display of lilies next year! Wow! Now you've got me wanting to get more.

You are lucky, Rosemary, and don't forget it!

Patti, I love that orchid and rose from boojum. Both are really pretty. I'm pretty much an orchid killer, too. I've tried them several times. I just don't have what it takes to keep them alive. Those tomatoes of yours look great! Your gardens look great to me, in spite of the dry weather. Mine are so full of weeds, except for the ones I just recently got weeded. I just can't keep up.

Downy mildew? That must be what killed my impatiens as well. I have them in my wheelbarrow out front, like I usually do. One big New Guinea one, and a bunch of the regular ones. All the regular ones rotted away, and I had no clue why. Guess it must have been the mildew. Jeez, another thing to spray for!

Patti, I also go by a house where there is a great display of dahlias. I don't have the time for all that, either. I love them, and grew them one year, but I have too much to do already. I have a ton of things that never got staked this year, and therefore ended up getting beaten down whenever we got rain, including several big clumps of phlox (which looked spectacular this year), Joe-Pye Weed, Rudbeckia nitida, echis, etc. Quite discouraging.

Well, I wanted to post some pics of the work I did on that garden in front and my new plants, but I can't seem to get them on my computer. Having issues with the card reader. Grrrrrrr!!!!!!

Karen

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Karen: You can never have too many lilies.

Thomaston, CT

Lilies are the stars of the garden, for sure....Bill, what kind of bulbs did you order?

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

all large allium - i am done with the smaller ones that do not stand up yanked a bunch out while weeding this year - i'll probably find them coming up in compost - i just receiveded for three cat's and compared some pricing HCG's is selling bulbs and should be arrested for the prices they attempt to charge.

Thomaston, CT

I haven't looked at their cat, & now I won't.....love alliums but they disappear quickly in my garden....something must eat them....

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

Even the large one?

ordered from brecks, summer drumer, persian blue, and the sparker mix that i hope do not droop. will probably plant all around the pond area. may order a few more for the shade garden.
