A change from "browse" to "Choose file"

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I thought it was always "browse" for selecting photos and now I see it is "Choose file". When did it change.

(Just a sanity test for me.)

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Just posted a photo to a Dmail and see that it tells me the number of the photo - terrific!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Now I feel like it was a dream because we're back to browse and "choose a file" isn't on thread responses or Dmails. Was this just a test?

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

Are you using different browsers when you see the different wording? Right now I'm using Safari (Mac) and it says "choose file", but I know when I've been on DG using other browsers (maybe IE on my PC?) I've seen the browse wording instead.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

I have never seen "choose file" - only "browse" :-)

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I always have the same browser, IE. Until you posted, ecrane, I thought I was posting to myself - doubting my sanity.

Now I hope it becomes a permanent change. It's often hard to remember which photo we selected, especially when we're choosing five photos to add to a post, so this would solve that problem. If I see it again, Terry, I'll take a screen capture pronto.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Did you upgrade to IE9? I haven't yet, but a browser upgrade *could* explain it ;-)

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

No, I didn't. I guess it will remain a puzzle.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

I was curious so I checked, and on my Mac, Safari shows "choose file" while Firefox shows "browse". I'll have to check on my PC at work (IE not sure what version) to see what it says--pretty sure it's browse (or at least used to be)

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

It only showed "choose file" once and then reverted to "browse". It was nice while it lasted!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

It's back!

How strange - it's not available when I load photos here.

We're wrestling with the Flash part of the new coding, so we've temporarily rolled it back to what it was before. Stay tuned :-)

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Just today I took the plunge and upgraded to Mountain Lion on my Mac. Love, love, love it. Of course, I am Safari and I haven't checked the wording you are discussing yet. Ecrane, just in case you are hesitant....mine is macBook 5,2 mid 2009. I have upgraded the memory to 4gb from 2gb. It is much cleaner and faster.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Mine says "choose file". Never paid any attention before.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

coleup---Good for you for taking pictures of your screen! Now people won't think I am losing it...

That is exactly what I saw! I did post 5 pictures and pressed "send" and they went in a flash of
the eye....BAM! All 5 of them--uploaded....

Also--the "x"'s appearing on each posted picture--maybe??--gives one the chance to remove it
if one changes his/her mind???

A good place to hash out all kinds of things happening is on the Daves Graden Forum.
You can learn a lot on there....and not feel like the Lone Ranger....

Gita -

Yes, the "x" on each shot allows you to delete it. I tried it and it works. Terry had the original idea and the powers that be must have decided it's a good thing and it is.

Arlene--

Seems that was an "experiment" ???? My 5 pictures sure loaded fast under the new format!

Things are now back to normal---"Browse".....

Which will it be in the long run? Gita

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Gita - On 8/16 Terry said: We're wrestling with the Flash part of the new coding, so we've temporarily rolled it back to what it was before. Stay tuned :-)

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

Yes, we've pulled it back until the flash issues have been resolved. I've played with it in the 'staging' area and really like it.

Stay tuned.

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

They've just rolled it out. Let us know if you see any issues.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I've loved it since I first stumbled upon it by accident (or their testing). Thanks, team!

Even nicer is now you can choose multiple files all at once if they're all in the same folder. I just plucked 5 large photos from one folder by holding down the ctrl key then clicking with my mouse on the ones I wanted; and it uploaded them in short order. Once they've loaded in preview, you can click the red "x" to remove any that you change your mind on before you hit "send."

Beautiful blooms, Terry!!

It's been going back and forth for me, also, and I only use one computer/browser. This morning I was able to upload some pics with the "Choose" format, but it was extremely slow and some pics wouldn't load at all. Out of five pics, I ended up having to replace 3 of them with different ones. They all came from the same camera & file. Normally they load immediately. Just my two cents worth.

By-the-way I have soooo been enjoying the ability to load 5 pics in one post after years of one-per-post that I'm really reluctant to complain at all.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

nutsaboutnature, thanks for the kind words. Those were taken earlier this summer.

How big were the pics? And what kind of connection are you on?

The bottom line is no matter how much we tweak the uploader (and I think it is performing much faster than the original multiple uploader tool), there's always going to be a restriction on the "flow" between members' computers and DG's servers. Some of it is on your end, with your ISP's limitations. Some is on our end with what our service and servers can handle.

It is a lot like a water spigot and hose. Even if you turn the spigot on full blast, the hose can only carry so much water per inch of pipe. And no matter how big the diameter of your hose, your water spigot's output is determined by your water pressure.

Algonquin, IL(Zone 5a)

Terry, I'll check the pic sizes to give an exact number, but the pics I upload have all been pretty much the same size for years and the original multiple uploader was, for me, "blazing fast". Another member on the same thread this morning couldn't upload at all.

I'm using Internet explorer...whatever the most recent edition is...and have had no problems until this morning. I honestly can't remember if I've uploaded using this same format before today, even though I've seen it periodically.

I'll come back and edit this post in a minute with the link to that thread, but again, please don't take this as a complaint cause it really isn't...just an observation.

Okay, here is that link:

I changed my ISO on my camera to a #5 and have not had any problems uploading pictures.
Still need to learn more about my camera,,,,

Yesterday--I uploaded 5 pictures (in the new format) and hit "send". They were posted in one second!

Like that.....Gita

Algonquin, IL(Zone 5a)

In addition to the super-slow uploading, I'm not having any luck using CTRL to upload multiple images. So just out of curiosity I checked the exact same images on eBay as though I were creating a listing (I always use CTRL on eBay to load multiple pics). It worked just fine...same pics, same computer, same CTRL key. ??????

I have to believe there are still glitches in this new system since, from what I've read, there are all sorts of members having problems with it. Apparently some people aren't even seeing the "Choose a File" link.

I think once the kinks get ironed out it should be a nice way to upload photos. Even with all the problems right now I, for one, really appreciate how hard the folks at DG work to make this a better and better place to enjoy spending time!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Just tried CTRL and though all photos were in the same file, it just uploaded one. I gave up after five minutes of waiting.

Algonquin, IL(Zone 5a)

Pirl, I'm running into similar problems. CTRL on my computer works just fine everywhere else I use it and on other websites as well. Also, yesterday when I tried to upload photos, only some would load so I had to choose alternate ones.

I just tried again in the "Test" forum and finally gave up. Like you, I sat and waited (even walked away and left it for a while) and they were still sitting there waiting to load. The old way, for me, used to load super-fast.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

My CTRL works for everything else, too. I did walk away but they still didn't load. Hopefully, the kinks will be worked out.

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Finally figured out how to see the choose file box but still can't post more than one photo at a time.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I am also unable to ctrl select multiple pics.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Sheila, can you upload them one at a time? Can you use the ctrl function to select multiple images on other sites or applications? If the answer to the first one is "yes", and the second one is "no" or "I don't know" it may just take a little coaching and troubleshooting to help you - please go ahead and use this link so we can help you one-on-one: http://davesgarden.com/helpdesk/dg/

For those of you who are having problems seeing the "Choose a File" option, can you do us a favor?

1. Click on this link to report the problem you are having: http://davesgarden.com/helpdesk/dg/
2. Include the browser and version you are running
3. Specify whether you can see the "Preview" and "Send" buttons or if they are missing, too.
4. Specify if you have tried (in the test forum) to start a new thread, or if you are looking at threads previously on your "watched" threads list.
5. Specify if you have cleared your history and/or cookies or not.

That will help us gather the information we need to give to the technical team so they can work on it.

Algonquin, IL(Zone 5a)

Well, I guess I'm another one that should use that link to report. I still am not able to use CTRL to upload multiple photos ( it works fine on every other site I've tested it on) and I'm still only able to load some of my pics even though they are all the same basic size.

Algonquin, IL(Zone 5a)

Okay, I just put in my report.

Everyone with problems, please follow Terry's advice and report them using that link. The sooner the Computer Programmers get a handle on the issues, the sooner they'll be able to fix them...and that will be good news for all of us!
