Morning Glories 2012 # 03

Prescott, AZ(Zone 7b)

Helena - 3" is pretty good size, but they look like giant brug size blossoms in the photo.

Linda - I have been buying those little party mint bags at the Dollar store and then putting half a bar of Irish Spring in it and placing them as close to the tops of the plants as possible. Shaving it into pieces sounds like a good idea too. The soap cuts well with just a pocket knife. It's been working pretty good for my hollyhocks, they obviously don't like the smell. I wonder if I stuck it in gopher holes if it would send them a runnin' too, LOL. Or maybe really low to keep the bunnies at bay. Only problem with using this kind of deterrent is everyone who walks through your garden has to ask "what's that?"

Here is an article with a few hints and tricks. Hope one will work for you.

Helena, love that new bloom, the color is gorgeous.

Dee did you see my post above, the size of the blooms in the pic affected because I tried to edit the' dog house out of the photo? Should have just left the dog house in I suppose.

Heres what the orig photo looked like

Patootie -
Is that the perennial kind of white MG or an annual one?
I just put in some of the perennial kind on the arbor going into the MG garden. I fear it will be to large for it but I guess I'll see won't I.
Linda - thanks for the link.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Well, my morning glory tree is about to open the first bud, looks like it is white.

Love all those pretty blooms!

Dee, its a true perennial. Took 2 full yrs
for the 1st blooms. They were definitely worth waiting for

Linda it might be a white but I see soft pink I think. Lets see what color it opens in the morning.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Are they like regular morning glories, they open in the morning, then close?

Gautier, MS

Linda, hope your bloom opened today. My mg open in the morning and usually close by noon unless it's a day that's not sunny and on the cooler side, I've had blooms stay open into evening. The little red orange mg's & my "pumpkin" have always stayed open all day. I've always had those for my hummingbirds though they can be invasive, seed themselves everywhere.

It did open this morning, and it is white! Now I will be on the look out for the other colors! And this plant is at least 8 foot tall now! Do they get bigger?

Thumbnail by taters55
Prescott, AZ(Zone 7b)

Linda - Please save seeds, I have been looking for white everywhere and I can't find it!
It may be a while before I see seeds on my pink ones, they are only 4" tall and I germinated all the seeds I had. I wonder if they would mail alright, maybe in Fall.
Helena - I would love seeds to the orange one, I have sooo many hummers, I'm always looking for food plants for them. If you have some to spare Dmail me.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

I sure will. Are the seeds easy to find? Like a morning glory?

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Linda the tree mg's are in the mg family, just a different genus than Ipomoea. I can't think of the correct genus name right now but it might come to me later, :-) Sr moments and lots of them. Yes, the white sds might prove hard to find.

Prescott, AZ(Zone 7b)

I did find one place that sells the pink ones in my search for a white one. I got my seeds from someone I met on Dave's Garden. We were sending all kinds of seeds back and forth and he just sent these for me to try. If you can't find seeds definately hold off buying a plant and I'll send you one as soon as they are big enough to travel, I have like 8 extra.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

That will be great, thanks.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Linda, so glad that Dee can send you a pink tree mg.

Gautier, MS

Pretty white blooms Linda.

Those are all beautiful, but I have to say I am partial to the blue and white one! Do you know what it is called?

Prescott, AZ(Zone 7b)

I agree, the blue and white is gorgeous. And any names are appreciated since I'm just getting started.

Gautier, MS

Thanks Linda and Dee. The blue and white is called Diluted Fuji no Murasaki x Keiru. 2nd bloom is Karens2005 Duskie x Chocolate & last also Karens2005 Duskie x Fujishibori cross. I haven't been concentrating on names much any more but these are Ipomoea nil.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Your beautiful blue and white is my favorite too Helena. Its that shade of blue, so pretty that gets me.

Linda, forgot to say your white mg tree is a beauty.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Thank you. I sure hop I get seeds from it, as I want several of each color. Anyone have the lavender one?

Prescott, AZ(Zone 7b)

Has anyone tried sending MG seedlings? They seem pretty sturdy. You know I could probably chance sending with soil since it's going to Texas. They're in potting soil anyway, pretty sterile. I'll start looking for a proper box to send it with it's pot. If I do it soon maybe it won't be too hot.

Gautier, MS

Thanks Jackie.

A new one that has a "lady Laura" label but could be a cross.
Repeat Lav. Mist.
Repeat Pink Porcelain
Salvia guaranitica (Brazil)
Love my roses

Helena, great blooms but the Lady Laura is special with the extra petal??

Dee, Almost July, I think I would wait till the fall to ship to be on the safe side.
Edited to say Logees used to send me plant shipments all thru the summer and they made it just fine
but they weren't mg's.

Beautiful blooms Helena.
I finally had a potted mg bloom open this morning. This is
the mutant from Sarah. Diluted Fuji no Murasaki, DFNM for short. Its not actually a diluted bloom yet but subsequent
blooms might be. I have 2 mutant vines growing

Thumbnail by patootie
(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

What do you mean by diluted?
Love all those blooms!

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

This is a small Lavender hederacea from Ronnie. Its a cutie, thanks Ronnie,

This is what I found blooming this morning, almost a light chocolate!

Oh thats pretty Linda. I was trying to find a pic of the mutant to show you. Becky named the DFNM. I
really don;t know where the Diluted comes in. The sd came from Sarah and she didn't name it as I
recall so Becky did,.
Sarahs bloom was a beauty, a natural cross. It was first posted about Sept 3, 2008 so I will try to find a
link to the pic if it doesn't take me too long,

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Linda, found the thread where Sarah introduced us to her beautiful mutant bloom. Ron makes a statement or
explanation re the diluted bloom.
Hope I've got the right link.

Thanks for the thread! Lots of interesting info there!

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

You're welcome. I wish I had more time so I could go back and re-read some of the old posts.
Some great info in the old threads.
One thing I found was the name of our mg tree, Its carnea but I had long since forgotten it.
I used to call mine Carnea ssp fistulosa but subspecies fistulosa is not correct. I used ssp because the lvs on the regular carnea are huge compared to the slender lvs on my carnea.

Gautier, MS

Very nice blooms Jackie and Linda. Thanks for that into on Sarah's diluted bloom too Jackie.

My diluted fuji no murasaki x keiru mg had 9 blooms today but it just doesn't want to produce seeds & I hand pollinated them too. Last pic of Pink Porcelain x chocolate cross.

Gautier, MS

Thanks Linda and Jackie. I hope I get seeds from it too.
