Garden Projects # 9
Allison, when Rosemary mentioned putting some hens and chicks in the stump, I thought sedum would do well, also. Nice pic.
Karen
wow look at all those rocks
come on Victor you don't feel the least bit sorry for me? lol
Love, love, love the cookies Jo!!!!!!!!
Allison, looking good....do I smell cow manure? (grin)
I just knew people would like them. The Bees were the most popuar because they were small.
told you Jen.. all you have to do is dig a hole.. and you get rocks like that.. might need a pic axe to get through it.. but it's that easy .. and yes Celeste the smell of cow manure is in the air... LOL
oh I was shocked to see how much water came through the stump when Randy hit it with the chain saw.. told him .. he made it cry... brat!!!... LOL
Good one, Allison.
Onewish1, Has Wha gotten to your house yet to snag some of your rocks?
Ge1836, great cookies
My DH is the best. Yesterday he had three guys from the lawn service come over for a couple of hours in the morning to help us weed the last of the horrible Rosa Rugosa north bed which I was dreading. They also did some edging and weed whacking. There couple of hours has saved me two days of work which means I can go to Vt in the morning and not worry about getting everything as done as I had hoped for by Thursday.
But we still plenty to do. DH has more work to do along the edges of the property with the weed whacker. After seeing how one area looked we decided to take down some more big cedar limbs to open up one of the paths that goes through some of the natural areas of the property. It now looks great. It is amazing what a chain saw can do in a minute. I don't know why we hadn't done it years ago as you always had to duck through the cedars in a couple of spots. I will continue to prune and weed through all the beds until Thursday, but I want to cry about what won't still be in bloom come Thursday. The lawn guys will come on Tuesday to mow and blow out any beds that need it. Our big crab, which I pruned some from yesterday is still dropping lots of yellowed leaves. Annoying as it makes the Hosta bed under it look messy, so I will want that one blown out. The Tree is healthy, so I am not sure why it is still dropping leaves. Too much rain?
I am heading out for the day to deadhead of the TBI and Peonies and do more edging and repair a bed that the dogs dug a trench through yesterday to get at the moles. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Then I plan on attacking some rampant PI which is coming up in the one of the newer beds in the woods. I bought plastic sandwich bags yesterday and will use them to pull them out and put the evil stuff into a big garbage bag along with the sandwich bags. I don't plan on touching any of the stuff. But I have my Tecu Extreme at the ready. Thank you Victor at that was the best tip I ever got on DG . Cool today here so I should get lots done. Patti
Laughed when I read that the 'girls' were decorating for the open house! Don't miss the bathtubs Robs used to dig....Where is all the PI coming from? It's in every one of my per. beds! Jo, yummy looking cookies.....Wegman's? or the bakery down by the canal?
Nope new bakery on RT31 across from Wegmans. From Scratch Cakery
Put him to work...he'd love it!
oohhh I like that idea!!
Heehee
What a great guy, Patti!!! Gotta love him. I am sure everyone will understand what a different season this has been and love your tour anyway. I know I would.
Day has ended as I am just too tired to do anymore today. Never got to the PI pulling as I got to edging a bunch of the beds and then saw some pruning to do, so got into that, then noticed some random downed branches in the woods, so I started cleaning that up and then I started to rake up around the trees that I trimmed around at the base which lead to weeding around all the shrubs that are peppered about the property and so it went until I was too tired to do my intended job.
DH did more pruning of some Viburnums and all the lilacs to tidy them up. He spent a few hours brush cut the rest of the edges of the property. Then he hauled away all the piles of cuttings that I had made. He is just finishing up erecting a new bamboo fence that I like to use to run tomatoes up strings that are attached at the top of the horizontal bamboo that runs across about 30 feet of space and supported by vertical bamboo poles about every 6 feet. I already planted the tomatoes in grow bags. This system seems to work pretty well as you just turn the growing tomato around the dangling string and they just grow up with no other supports. As they grow you just give them another turn on the string and up they go. You do have to prune off everything except one stem. Third year for this method for some out our tomatoes. The rest we do in cages. This is climbing method is sort of how they grow them in most commercial hot houses.
Best part of the day was when friends came to see the garden and DH fried up Beignets and some great Deer sausage that was a gift from a hunter friend to have as brunch food after they did a garden tour. DH had made proper New Orleans beignets on Friday too for some house guest who left yesterday. Because he had dough left over he thought it was worth trying them a second day and they were almost, but not quite as good as the day before. They were just not as puffy. No complaints from our friends who spend a great deal of time each year in New Orleans, so that tells us that they were good. I took these friends for a walk around the property and realized that though they are almost our closest summer friends that they had never seen much of our property. They often come after dark for dinner or just walk through the beds near the house. He especially had no idea of where our property went. Kind of funny. We rarely have garden visitors.
Off to Vermont in the early morning. Wish I could stay on Nantucket, but I need to have the final meeting with the carpenters to see that the inside is done. Punch list time on Monday. They will be doing the painting on the outside next, but the house is just going to be white, so no decisions to be made. I'll be back on Monday night. I dread the 9 hours of driving in total which is way too much. Patti
allison - i looked at your rocks and they are safe - went on a garden tour to bedrock gardens in lee, nh today and saw plenty of very, very, very cool stuff with rocks - will post some pic's on a separate thread when i have a chance - 60 acres with ton's of garden art.
patti sounds like you are as ready as you can for the tour, really wish we could get there!
Wha, can't wait to see what you found at Lee. I would love to go there at some point. I never got my garden sculptures done except my scare crows which have turned out pretty cool. Silly, but fun. Never enough time.
I had hoped to take some shots today of the garden, but that didn't happen either.
Wha, we are due to see some of your garden shots soon and where are shots of Victor's Pond? Patti
Patti.....what a schedule! Lucky folks who ate the beignets.....my DH never cooked one thing in his lifetime, except on the grill......Bill, sounds like you have some way cool plans for the rocks......
Wow - Patti! And - glad to help with Tecnu.
Same here - lots of PI this year. And spiderwart, which had never been a big problem. It's everywhere now.
my spiderwart came back with vengeance this year too.. been trying to get rid of that for 3 years
Jo, those cookies looked the bestest! Too good to eat....uuummm.....no, I guess not!
Patti, you're a busy bee, as usual. Your place sounds like it pretty ship shape now. I'll bet everyone will love your gardens on the tour.
Bill, looking forward to seeing the pics of the gardens in Lee, NH.
Spiderwort will never go away.
I got a bunch of weeding done today. This time of the year I get overwhelmed with all the weeding that needs to be done, and it never gets completely done. There is just so much to do. I also got some stuff potted up. I have to do some spraying tomorrow, and will get more weeding done.
Karen
My spiderwort is so well behaved, go figure!
