Garden Projects # 9
Jen, 'Silver Mound' is well-behaved. It stays in a mound. I think it's it's also a short lived perennial, but it sure is gorgeous. Your lawn looks fabby, btw!
Hope you had fun visiting those nurseries, Patti. I know I would! Looking forward to pics of your new kitchen when it's done. Post a before and after shot.
Karen
Victor, I'm with you in the lawns/ chemicals thing. Don't get me wrong, if I didn't have two grass eating, dirt eating dogs, I'd be slathering those chemicals all over the place to have a nice lawn like that!!!! It looks so nice! Our lawn is pathetic and getting worse every day. Our new dog enjoys eating the dandelion seed heads now.
I gave up on trying to keep up with the lawn so I do NaturaLawn. Natural chems at least :) And no phosphorus for the run off (which goes directly into the river here). It helped tremendously, though I had to tell them not to kill the clover as it is not a weed in my book.
I'd love to do all beds but my husband doesn't want our house to stand out that much in the neighborhood. Every time he complains about mowing, I remind he I'm all for enlarging the beds (slowly, bit by bit so he doesn't notice. mwahahahaha)
jen you can still plant on the leach field - just stick with perennials - grass looks good, i only use the one crabgrass application a year and grub killer. the only kid running around here is me:)
Wha, be careful as you work so hard you are always grubby and we don't want you to eradicate yourself.
I am still in Vt as we had more to do than time allowed to leave yesterday, but leaving today with a nice new pile of plant, all little guys, that we got at Walkers Farm yesterday. It is a little gem of a place between Brattleboro and Putney Vt just off I 91 on old route 5 and 10 if any of you are ever in the area. Ran into a landscaper from Nantucket who was up buying specialty annuals from them for some of his high end clients for some big containers. Small world. When this house is done and I fix up the yard which is a nightmare at the moment, I want to have a gathering of DG folks up here. Heading south today to catch the late ferry. Patti
Hubby would never let me plant in the middle he loves his lawn, now the backyard is a different story
Lawn is shot back there cause of the dog(look how tiny he looks from up here) I took down the birdfeeders cause that's where the pool is going and we're getting a new swing set and moving it more to the side so it's not in the center of the lawn, but I need it to be in view when I'm inside
aaaaaawwwwwwwwwww look at Wall-E
Eevie, I love clover in my lawn, too! That is why I hesitate to put weed killer on it. I don't want to kill the clover.
I like to have some lawn. You have to have some for the dogs to enjoy running around on, and for parties and roundups and bbq's. And how can you play croquet without a lawn? Not that I do, but just saying.
Jen, what a huge expanse of lawn area you have! None of my lawn areas come anywhere near that size. Wall-E does look very small in that large expanse of lawn.
LOL! Patti, I love your "grubby" comment! BTW, every year when you mention Walker's Farm I want to go. Maybe someday I'll get up there. Won't be this year, I don't think. Hmmm..... you never know..... If you ever have that DG gathering up there, it will give me an excuse to visit WF.
Karen
well i was working in the yard and patti still gave me a hug so i could not have been that grubby - then again patti is a brave person:)
Wha, Ha, I am still trying to wash you off. I think I was being more polite than brave. Just kidding, garden sweat is my favorite scent. Far better than any fake fragrance and look at what you get for all that sweat if you work as hard at as you do. Your garden and stonework are truly stunning. Mine is coming along nicely, but all the great things that normally bloom on June 21st will be finished. Sad. Do you think I should hit up the fake flower section at Micheal's and salt the garden with some nice plastic ones? Patti
i know your yard will look fantastic patti!
I've seen a few houses with those plastic flowers, looks really ridiculous, though, mid winter when there are hot pink and purple flowers "blooming" when everything else is brown or evergreen
Floor in daughter's room is DONE, now to move in the furniture(hers the only room (so far)that has been completely overhaulled)
Trying an experiment, I stil hadn't started most of the caladiums so I made paper pots for them to give them a head start and then I can just plant the whole thing without having to pick them out of the dirt
that will work great Jen!!
oh I will do that with begonias too
The floor looks good, Jen, and those paper pots are a really good idea.
Karen
Jen, great looking floors. Smart paper pots.
We are in the process of emptying out the Green House. Too much work, but it must get done. I got a good bit of the east porch staged so far, and tomorrow I will finish up that side and work on the west side containers. I decided today to plant all of our Hippeastrums in a part shade bed for the summer and re-pot them all in the fall as they need all need that. Not sure when I have time to do this but I guess it will get done. Patti
Love the epis, Patti. I have one that needs potting. It's just sitting in a jar, rooted. Looks like a big project for you.
Tomorrow starts my stay-cation. I will be getting lots done in the gardens. I go back to work on June 5th. Looking forward to having some time off. Next Sat. we are having a plant sale/yard sale, so I have to get my sales areas looking good, and need to pot up more plants for selling.
Karen
Karen, It makes so much sense that you are doing a stay-cation at this time of the year. You will be so amazed if you can ever retire as tl have as much time as you want to do anything that tweaks your fancy. I am so spoiled. What are you selling besides plants? I wish I could come but we will be in Vt that weekend. DH starts his rowing season and has a regatta in CT on that day. But instead of going to cheer him on, I think I will stay in Vt and try to deal with the jungle that we have growing up there. Horrible mess. I took shots today of the garden in Nantucket. Here is a link. Enjoy. Patti

Very pretty ladies!!!
Holy cow Patti!! Love those epi's!!!!!!
Looking good Jo, my poppies are ready to pop too. :)
Beautiful gardens, both of you. Wonderful time of year, too!
Wha, not sure which shot you are looking at but I know these two are pictured and are well behaved if not shy as we have had them for years and they haven't gone nuts.
Aquilegia Spring Magic Blue and White
Aquilegia Pagoda White
Though we have zillions of other ones that have crossed and pop up everywhere that are pinks and purples. I also grew one from seed years ago that is called A. Green Apples that is also rather a bit of a romper, but love it. Waiting to see if a pleated blue and white one returns as planted. It is about to open. Then we have A. William Guiness or Magpie in bloom and some others, but I didn't take shots of them yesterday
Now off to wander through Jo Ann's garden before heading down to move more of the GH outside. Have a good day all. Patti
Really nice pics, Patti. I especially like the yellow bearded iris with the brown striping, and also the Sib (?), the yellow with brown veining. Very striking on both. Do you know what varieties they are? How do they do at blooming? Lots of blooms on them?
Yes, I look forward to retirement. Hopefully that will happen for me, but one just never knows. I know I will never be bored. BTW, I don't really know what we are selling at our yard sale. My sister is mostly in charge of that. I know we have a lot of books, hardcover, nature books with lots of info and pics. My mother had a huge collection. I resisted getting rid of them for many years, but it's time to say goodbye to all but my faves. My father had quite a collection of books, too, many nonfiction, stuff on Russia, religion, the universe, etc. Hoping to get some book lovers over here.
Jo, your beds are looking great. I love all the irises. I especially love your Sib 'Pennywhistle'. What a nice one.
Karen
Karen, books, breaking my heart....aside from gardening stuff that is a big draw for me. Wish I could come. Patti
Iris pseudacorus x 'Berlin Tiger'
Hybridized by Tamberg, 1988
and a gift to me from Boojum (Kathy Puckett) in 2009. But this is first year it has bloomed. Yippee
Miniature Tall Bearded Iris Kaleidoscope (Katkamier 1929) planted in 2008 and bought from Iris City
4.80 sale from 6.00 It has bloomed nicely since planting it but hasn't grown into a dividable clump yet. Thought I may move some of it this year to a better spot as I love it as I do any of the streaked or broken color ones. Odder the better in my book. Off to Boston and then to Vt tomorrow to see my maybe finished new kitchen. Fingers crossed. Patti
thanx everyone.
Fingers and toes crossed here for you, bb.
Lovely photos, Jo & Patti! I'm drooling over all of the iris....good luck with the sale, Karen.....
Very nice! Cool plush collection too.
And that's not even 1/2 of it, more in the closet and in the drawers and on top of the bed and in her tent in the family room....I really wish people would stop buying them stuff and buy some stocks or bonds or something
Jo, you pictured a bearded iris that was apricot and violet, with allium behind it. Do you have a name for that one?
Patti, your place must be huge, can't imagine how you take care of it, but looks great.
What a lovely room for your daughter, Jen! Jo, love those iris!
Iris are new for me. I love them too.
