Garden Gems for May 2012
close but not quite
i think you may be correct celeste - thx!
nice jen - great pic's victor
yeah pretty colors!!!!
Very nice, folks....thanks, Pixie, for identifying Buster...yes, Bill, I brought some to Louise's last year......
Very nice!!
that iris is fascinating.
I'm jealous of your allium, Victor. Somebody, not sure who, has bitten off/eaten the heads before they even opened. I only have a few left. so much for having nice things in a wildlife garden :p haha
saw that dopey GH in the yard this afternoon... gggrrrr.. have to get more apples
evie, they ate the allium???? That is totally weird
I am going to a nursery in Fairfield, my children want to buy me a bush for mother's day. What is a must in every garden, according to you?
I will leave a shrub or bush to the experts!!!.. I could never pick one
Really depends on what appeals to you. Need to consider where it will go, size, shape, flowers, fall color, food for critters, winter interest, etc. No such thing a must-have for everyone!
Victor, I have a lot to learn.
What is your favorite shrub?
Hard to pick one. Favorites include crape myrtle, viburnum, hydrangea and small J. maples.
Hydrangea [I think] is a must have, unless your gardens have a modern style to them
Hydrangeas and Viburnums for me... But consideration of conditions is crucial...
Victor which white allium is that?
I'm no expert as far as shrubs go that's for sure but my personal favorite is definitly Hydrangea.
looks like you need some RR spikes Celeste... will see if my neighbor still has any.. will keep that color dark
Love the color on those clems, Allison! Rose, my favorite shrub is little leafed rhododendron.....very hardy, an early bloomer, evergreen, not bothered by insects.....
ooh, shrubs. great for year-round interest and backbone for garden. for me my lot is small so I can't go with many cool shrubs because they'd take up my whole side yard (only 10-11' wide!).
We really like our diablo ninebark. It is forgiving when pruning, provides year-round interest (cool, peeling bark), birds are often poking around looking for insects, nice white clusters of flowers that contrast with the foliage. Branches often start out going straight up until a big rain comes and then they arch downward. We're in sandy soil and it does just fine.
Picture of mine from a ways back:

I think my first shrub purchases were rhodis and a JM. I happen to love the boxwood aroma too. Then the hydrangeas viburnums and hollies. Now I'm mesmerized by dwarf conifers.
Love that Rhodie Rosemary
Did anyone have trouble opening the link above?
I couldn't ...
NO MORE picasa albums..I dont think its fair to ask people to sighn up for yet another thing on the computer.
It just easier to use Smilebox
Here is what I meant to send.

Wow- gorgeous photos! Is the Clem in the 2nd one Omoshiro? So lovely and delicate! I'm dying to get one, but in an effort to show some discipline (Hah!) I've decided to wait until I finish taking care of the 10 new ones I got this year. Actually I already tried to cheat on that vow, but Brushwood is out of it, and Silver Star doesn't list it. And what is the plant in pic #1? It looks familiar, but I can't quite place it.
Funny, I have a google account, but have learned not to sign in from links like that since my Facebook account was compromised that way. Not that I think it would have been a problem, but it's automatic with me now not to do it. And besides, if they say you're allowed to share, they have a nerve making people sign up.
.
And Happy Mothers Day to you, too... Et al...
The Smilebox presentation is lovely. Pretty flowers and terrific presentation. Enjoy!
Marcia
