Preparation for spring

Morgantown, WV

Anyone else beside me preparing for spring? I have been buying flowers and working outside a lot already. Me and my husband has been clearing some land. I am moving some rose plants onto a hillside. I am realizing how you can move plants around. I have some mums too close together I have to move this spring. I am growing plants indoors and from seeds as well. Most of the plants I brought in last fall have survived in the house. I will be so busy in march preparing my pots. I plan on preparing 20 pots this year with new flowers. I have been waiting since last summer to do the pots the ways I want. Plus figuring out what I will do with all the bulbs I saved from last year. Or if the bulbs even made it through the winter. I am still a new Gardner so everything I do I am amazed in what works. Anyone else out there itchen to getting started besides me.

Thomaston, CT

I've been picking up sticks, but it's too early too do any gardening outside here...the ground is still frozen....have started some seeds indoors, like annual phlox & scabious....everything has germinated......

Morgantown, WV

Here in WV our dirt has not frozen this year. Really a mild winter. Usually march warmup some anyway. We only have two weeks till march. I tried starting phlox and nothing came up. I have started some other seeds as well.

Usually too early here too, I see the farmers already prepping their fields...I've never seen that sooooo early.
I will get out there and do some pruning but no clean up yet, since weather has been soooo wacky I wouldn't be surprised if March turns cold on us, but who knows? I'm playing it by ear. I do have lots of goodies on order and am always planning new gardens or expansions

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Too cold here too. I am just picking up sticks( lily stems that were overlooked ) Hellebores are hust peeking along with tips of daffs and a few 2 year old tulips. Its nice to see Sunlover and Pomponettes comming back.

Nothing up here yet...just a budded hellebore.....but when I stopped at the PO yesterday, tulips, daffs, & hyacinths were all above ground!

I know what you mean about March. I hope it is ok. Sometimes march brings the most snow. Today is another gorgeous day. Working on ground to move some flowers to. I do see signs of plants waking up. I would have ever thought winter could be this light. I am thoroughly enjoying it.

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

The ground is pretty soft here, but still hard to stay out long enough. I too am picking up sticks, and get this, moving rocks. Chain gangs would not like working here. I do for about a half an hour when weather permits. I am also digging up a mountain of compost to move when it's not frozen. It's much nicer to surf for gardening products--I need microfoam polypropylene sheets to keep the new camellias covered outside, and some good planting guards to keep voles out of my cherry and apple shoots.

Morgantown, WV

Hello Rose, I know what you mean about moving rocks! We are cleaning off a hillside of rocks and roots. I've wanted to clean off this area for 30 years. We definitely picked the right winter to do it. I have been amazed at the days we have had this winter to get work done. I normally can not work outside on hot days so this weather has been perfect for me. Today though the wind seemed cold as the day went on and it made me feel terrible. I ended up sleeping hours this evening feeling ughy. I think the coldness in the air and I my arthritis don't like each other. My house is now a mess because I have been outside more than in side. And QVC had gardening stuff on the air. I ended up buying some new flower holders for my deck! Our economy is not good now but my urges to buy stuff for gardening and flowering is going good right now lol.
I have my pots figured out now what I am going to do. Beginning of March I plan on starting filling them. I have some beautiful coleus going under lights now. My seed planting hasn't really started yet I'm trying my best to be patient and not start till the right time. I have four pots of gerberas doing pretty well under lights that I tried to save from last year. They are so ready to be outside again now though. They bloomed nicely through December. They are still nice and green but not blooming. I have two orange trees going also. My one has actually grown some necterines but two sour to eat this year. I hope next year they will be sweeter to eat.
For the first time last year I planted apple trees in my yard. I have grape plants I planted last year as well. I also have some blueberry plants I have had a few years. I got some blueberries but the birds got them before me. I have covers for them this year hehe. I have a dwarf cherry tree I also planted last year. This year I plan on planting a new dwarf peach tree. Mary apple trees are also dwarf trees. All my life I wanted to plant some trees in my yard. Took this long before my husband agreed with me. I hope I get to see some fruit from these trees watching them bloom and grow and produce will be so rewarding for me. So nice just getting to talk about what I am doing and hoping to do.

I'm thinking about starting some peas in early March. Just around the corner. WOW!!

Morgantown, WV

Yep me too. I love growing snap peas.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

All good news. Good luck with your crops.

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

I'd love to hear what you learn about growing fruit successfully, Dottie. We have trouble being vigalent enough to stop the various pest invasions. I've switched for now to thinking about berries to feed the birds, but will return to fruit for people in a more earnest way sometime. Since you're itching to grow stuff now, have you considered hydroponics? I have a furniture quality grow table that my dad made, currently just being for storeage, so I'm not much help to you.

Morgantown, WV

Well I now got seeds going under lights. Some doing well others nothing happening. Today I spent all day on my deck. I got my water pressure machine out and I pressure washed my deck. I didn't clean it last year and was it ever dirty. Tomorrow we are going to open up my earth boxes. I have like 16 earth boxes to plant this spring. I plan on planting my peas this week. It is suppose to be nice this week. I am so tired tonight but I love getting stuff ready for summer. I have lots of flowers popping up now.

Thomaston, CT

I put my seeds out in the shade for the day....hoping they will grow some......

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Its just so wonderful to go outside and not put on a coat and gloves.
I am preparing for next spring by finding places for tulips both Kaufmanias and Gregiis

Thomaston, CT

You are such a good planner, Jo....I buy some bulbs last min., dig them in any place, & say, "Wow, what happened?"

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Planning is important to the feeble minded!!LOL
I need to be sure I am not digging into spring bulbs from a few seasons ago.

Thomaston, CT

Have done that!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Transplanted the reticulated iris that were supposed to be 'George' back to the yellow/blue/white garden yesterday....there were a few I thought I dug down deep enough but ended up just chopping the foliage off the bulb and then couldn't find the bulb, NUTS, now I have to mark the spots where they were dug up to plant the replacements in the fall

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

started some seeds yesterday. they are in my greenhouse.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

When I trimmed the montauk daisies today, I had a thought. Why don't I see if I can root some of these? So, I put some directly in soil and brought some inside and have in water to see which way they will root better.

There is a fly in the house. ICK. It is buzzing all around.

Thomaston, CT

My Montauk daisies are leafing out already....

Westbrook, CT(Zone 6a)

Weather's been so unseasonal, I've already put in first plantings of spinach and peas. Carrots tomorrow. Some daffodils look like they'll bloom next week.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

My MDs are leafing out also.

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

My MD is one of very few that are leafing out.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)
