Peg what is that last one? The pink and white? Also, did you start the Moss Rose, from seed? When? Portulaca?
Plant propagation... the basics II
Pretty plants, Peg! Thanks for the cheery pictures.
I have read all sorts of threads and uses for the hydrogen peroxide, but I can't explain it to save my life. I think it's good to spray on seedlings too Jen to deter damping off caused by fungus. It discourages fungus. Among other things.
Absolutely right Amanda. Forgot that.
There's a very involved discussion/thread on DG somewhere - hell, we had one right here on Dave's thread back when.
Somebody with a brain should repost it here. Not me!!!! :D
Jnette, no, I did not start these from seeds. I had plants that multiplied in the first pic that I used. Right now I have over 20 differnt ones made. I'll try to post more pics later.
The second pic was through a trade just last week. I'm not sure which one you are asking about but I did try to put names on them.
This pic is of some of the rocks left to put in the larger garden pots. Hope you enjoy. I paint mostly frogs and turtles, but did paint some rocks in black and white to resemble animal prints. Pics to come.
Very cute rocks Peg. The second picture. The reason I asked is because I really like those things and I saved some seeds from mine last year. That's all.
Yes Amanda, are you talking about the hydrogen peroxide? I was a lurker on that thread in 2004. It has been bumped up every couple of years. I could probably find it again if enough people were really interested in it. In fact I think I saved it, but over the years of changing computers etc. I probably don't still have it. I could find it. It was very interesting.
Guess I will take a look. Maybe tomorrow if I feel anything like I do today.
Thanks for posting Peg! Lovely... all of them.... Nancy
Have I asked this already on this thread?
I am looking for corkscrew vine seeds. I managed to trash the 3 seeds that were sent to me in trade. I'm not sure how old they were but they're supposed to be easy to germinate.
Anyway - can anyone help? It looks like such a lovely flower I must have it! :D
A.
You trashed those seeds??? They are so expensive!! Summerhill Seeds is asking $10 for 5 seeds now I think it is. 'course, T&M is asking $7 for 4 cucumber seeds that I wanted. They are getting ridiculous.
BAH. Yes, I think I nicked the seeds too much and they got soft and rotted with a ziplock baggie over the tray.
Devastating. :/
Will have to keep looking.
If I could keep it outside I would split an order with you, but as an annual, they are too much trouble. Did you know they have to have those little tiny ants? I read that somewhere and I didn't believe it. I picked the pot up I had mine in and yup, there they were. I didn't have those little ants anywhere, so where did they come from? Think it said they needed them to bloom. Like they say peonys need ants. You always see them crawling all over the peony blossoms.
They are a very heavy vine. Like the Snail vine. You can't tell them apart until they bloom I am told. I had a snail vine and it was a pistol. The roots were wild. If our ground didn't freeze so deep I bet they would grow here. Come back every year.
Have you ever grown the Cobea Vine? Cup and Saucer? They are from Mexico and a real heavy, healthy vine. The problem I have found with them is that they don't bloom until just before our fall weather sets in, but I love the vine and am going to grow the white one again this year. If I have enough seeds do you want a couple of them? I love that vine. So, I might even bring it in the house if Bob will do it. And if I find a place for it. I have had both the purple and the key lime. The one I think I ordered tho was white. Not sure if they meant Key Lime or a pure white.
No never tried the other vines - I am aware of the snail vine and confusion over the two. I don't believe it would be hardy here, either, but it looks so beautiful and all the oooo and aaaahhhhh over the scent has me intrigued.
I'll keep looking. One of these days... :)
In the meantime I will have to settle for morning glories and passionflowers and hyacinth bean vine. I have some scarlet runner beans from last season but the critters kept eating them and I never got the chance. ha ha
Jen - seed packet from Burpee is $4.95; Park seed is $5.95. Same deal five (5) seeds. Don't know what shipping would be. Will have to get Court to order it for me. :)
Seed packet of what Amanda?
Good God, Jnette - why the corkscrew vine, of course! :/
Well, at that price I will buy a pack and give you some. How many were in there? Jen
I'm going to bed. Talk to you tomorrow. I have to find the catalogs. Jen
Looks like with shipping it would still be $10 ish for 5 seeds, as you said. :D
Well with Summerhill it would probably be $15!! That is getting up there to $3 per seed. Jen
What's wrong Jen. Your Birthday check I sent already spent????
LOL, Nope, Sharon, I just don't think I will spend the last nickle for seeds for Amanda. LOL
I think it's a wise decision. Got to start (!?) thinking of yours and Bob's retirement years. :D
Does anyone know if you can root a stem from a ginger lily? I had a couple break off yesterday and I hate to just chunk them, they smell so good.
Thanks, Linda
Wish I could help Linda, Not a clue. Jen
I ship stuff all the time and I have never seen a package for seeds cost as much as you guys are talking about. Are they coming from overseas? How are they shipped. That is price gouging for sure. I ship 5 pounds for that kind of money. Priority Mail USPS.
It does depend on your zip code if you are weighing them but seeds would go just regular priority mail if that. Am I reading something wrong? I cannot even read about seeds correctly. Seeds are just not my thing.
I just spread grass seed in the dog pen on the spots. I hope it comes up, my luck it will not.LOL I am a seed disaster. JB
JB, I have looked at some of the postage on the pkg. that I have gotten and sometimes the sender charges more and once in a while less. I just ordered a pkg of seeds from Burpee for $5.90 something and they charged me the exact same price of the pkg of seeds for postage. I do believe they are including handling in there without calling it that. Think they would rather the post office be blamed than let us know they are charging for their handling. Or, making more on overcharging for postage. Yeah, why would one pkg of seeds, even with bubblewrap or whatever, cost $6 to mail. They use the bubble envelopes so the size has something to do with it too.
Just my opinion. Jen
Jen ~ Is this the page to which you were referring?
http://www.using-hydrogen-peroxide.com/peroxide-garden.html
No, but it will do. The one I was talking about was a thread they had going in 2004. I do have it, I suppose I could bump it. Very interesting. Maybe I will see if I can do that.
I just got an e-mail from Burpee with free shipping for 3 days. Anyone want me to forward them the e-mail. I am going to take a nap. Really tired at the moment. I will return. Sharon
They are charging you for the envelope. If you purchase those from the PO I forget what they are but they are a couple of bucks. Then the postage is at least $1.00, so what are they charging you for. Bull Crap. If you want to really check on them go to the USPS.com and search calculate shipping. Or, google calculate mailing or shipping and you will find a place where you can judge what it should cost if they are using USPS envelopes and boxes.
On eBay if the seller prints out the shipping label on ebay you get a discount for the postage and you are supposed to pass it on to the buyer. Many do not..I usually charge $1.00 for the handling because the packing materiel costs so darn much that even when you buy it wholesale it runs into bucks. The paper I use is the special paper for shipping and it is worth it. Anyhow, I end up about even sometimes less than eBay expects as a discount from the sellers. You can really make money when you print shipping labels online. The seller always gets a discount and seldom passes it on.
Some people charge shipping according to the amount of money you spend. Crazy. You should watch your costs when you buy those seeds because they can screw you big time on the shipping unless they specify in writing in their catalog what you are paying for.
They need to be specific too. I raise hell when that happens to me and usually get a discount. LOL. They think everyone is stupid. NOT!
Well, I must be. I sent my order to Burpee Wednesday and Sharon says today it is free shipping for 3 days. Now if they don't ship it until today I should get free shipping shouldn't I? jen
Yes Sharon, send it to me. Bet they tell me I am not Sharon so can't have it. Jen
What are you going to order? Or have you done it yet?
Nothing now. I think they just sent it to old customers who haven't ordered for a while to get them back.
Oh my God, I hope you all get this shipping cost problem solved soon. LOL It is hysterical.
You are getting ripped off and can do nothing about it as long as you keep buying from certain places. They have one way of doing it and that is there way and that will be what makes them the most money you know that. Love you all. JB
Well, JB, explain this one. I ordered a game CD for my grandson from Amazon and it came to my post office. Bob went to the counter to get the package, and in front of the clerk he put a label with my grandson's name and address on it. The clerk said since it was not opened, and, I suppose he had not taken possession of it, he didn't have to pay the postage to Seattle. He did that so it would go out the fastest. I could have had it sent directly to him, but I had already made a mess of the order and didn't want to take any more chances of screwing it up worse.
Great!! Wonderful. Good thing to know. So, I told my daughter, my grandson's mother, about it. She thought that was pretty cool. So, my grandson got it, and told her he had to pay the postage on it. She told me about it, saying "Just wanted you to know, for future reference, that the neat trick didn't work. But, I laughed my ass off when he told me about it". But, she said at least they didn't send it back to me. Or to Amazon.
So, you see, it is not only the seed companies that are ripping us off.
Oh my Jen, I had never heard of that. How hysterical. Go to the Puppy thread. A suggestion for your saggy bellied cats. Later. I am still potting curly willows. JB
Opened a can of worms looking for that crazy seed, but the shipping price weighs heavily, so to speak, into whether or where I will purchase seeds.
I've been watching my 'winter sown' milk jugs for sprouts, and of course it's like watching grass grow. I decided to "cheat" with some of them and bring them inside to Rita's room/jungle and place them on the top shelf in that room. The ambient temperature is always 70 deg. or higher. Since most germination is heat related I figured I could speed the process a little. It seems to be working.
There are a couple of odd things that I've planted that I couldn't find any germination/propagation information for - I've brought those in too - if they don't sprout in a day or two I will have to unearth those seeds and maybe soak them overnight.
Am I the only one who tries to grow obscure native plants from seed? Ha. Ask a stupid question . . ...
Hope all's well - quiet here - I have been busy in the garden and not so much on DG. For you all too apparently. :)
A.
Ok Amanda, please explain yourself. LOL, You opened a can of worms on what seeds?
What seeds did you bring in to see if they would sprout? Winter sowing does take a long time. When you figure that a lot of seeds even need heat mats, you gotta know that some take a lot longer in the cold.
What are the obscure native plants you are trying to start from seed?
Yes, I am quiet here because we still have 4 inches of ice out here, I want to start my seeds in the house, but Bob went into the drs office to get a shot in his knee, and there were so many snotty nosed little kids in there, hacking, coughing, sneezing, etc. that they gave him their bugs so now the dr. wanted to put him in the hospital. When he gets it, he gets it so fast that all of a sudden it is in his lungs. But, if they put him there, the fill him up with antibiotics. His dr. doesn't like giving him those when he gets sick so that is why he ends up in the hospital. Now, does that make sense??
I like his dr. but he doesn't like me. I bought a riding lawn mower from him, and Bob made a comment to him, and I think it pissed him off at me forever. Oh well. Jen
