Hi Tom - thanks for asking that question - I have been meaning to, but really I have had my plate full. I can't remember who - maybe on another thread - talks about taking clippings of roses and hydrangeas from cemeteries or neighbors' homes. Ha hahaha a- but I guess if you want that particular flower why not?!

She said she figured she was doing them a favor by pruning back the roses because they do bloom better afterwards. ;)

Dave - it does take a lot of will power to push thru pain, depression, winter doldrums, but I saw a commercial for some health care product the other day that reminded me of this truism: "A body at rest tends to stay at rest. A body in motion tends to stay in motion." Ha. Newton's first law of motion. Who knew I'd be quoting the history of classical mechanics this morning?

JB - glad you're having some success with the hydrangea - any little bit helps, doesn't it?! :D

Sharon - I will send you my addy to beg for some poppy seeds - what Dave said confirms my own experience with them. I am going to sow them directly into the bed where I want them and hope for the best. Do you have the orange/California poppy? That's the one that has teased me for years with its dazzling image on the seed packet and mocked me from beyond. ;)

Awright everyone. I've been busy - plumbing is fixed, but Court has decided to keep the latest stray I brought home this week. If you don't hear from me don't assume automatically that I have something better to be doing.

Amanda - nice legs!

I have been playing Words with Friends on Facebook and on my Kindle. I love keeping my head busy.
Taking advantage of the slow time of year. I am about to take cuttings on all the Christmas Cactus and that will be the beginning of the busy time.

Amanda, nothing surprises me anymore.

Oh my, Tom, sorry did not mean to ignore you. Welcome and stay with us. You will see that once in awhile we come up with something worth trying. Seriously, this is a really good group to ask if you have a need to know.

JB ~ DG has some word games. Have you been to the games forum? When I was unable to use my computer, I used Steve's old laptop, with Win98 and the DG website worked just fine. I was unable to access my web-based emails, like Hotmail, AOL...etc. So I got hooked in the games for a while. Now I am downloading some programs onto the desktop and I do not want to tie up the bandwidth, as you know, I am on a land-line. So I will probably not do that for a while. When I think of the time that I spent on his computer, I could have called HP!!LOL!!

Tom-

I think you are supposed to put a glass jar over the rose cuttings after you have taken them.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

I need a different yard to root more roses. I have too much shade. I love them though, they are one of my faves.
I missed a lot over the last few days. My birthday was Wed. so I have been busy and there is a birthday party for me with a bunch of friends tonight and then they will finish it at a Karaoke bar afterwards for several friend's bd besides me.

Hope you don't get much more snow Carolyn. So you can have an early spring this year. The last 2 years were so horrid for you guys back east. You need a break.

I have had to water lately Ev. The nights are so cold though, things are not really being deceived yet though. I see a few things with buds, but not much.

Jeanette those smelly cute plants are bulbs so I put them around in several places. I am not seeing anything really happening with them yet. Maybe that is because of the cold nights.

Central, VA(Zone 7a)

Thankyou Evelyn and Jb for the hospitality,Carolyn I think I have too many cuttings out for the glass jars' All my mason jars are already full ;o) Thankyou for that article.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Wow, you must have put a lot of rose cuttings out Tom. Or maybe you aren't a canner. :0)

Thank you Amanda it was nice. I mainly celebrated it before in Dec. w/hubby on his birthday. We do that with both 2 weeks one side or the other of Christmas. He bought me a necklace and I wanted a fast food place called Farmer Boy for food. Tonight is a party for me though so the day continues on for the last month. lol I'm just happy to be 49. Now Dave is the baby again. Well we have some new people, they may be younger than us now.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

LOL, Congratulations Dawn!! I was telling Bob you must be quite a lot younger than we are since you like all the crap on Tru tv. We liked Forensic files and Dominic Dunn and the writers stories. So, we feel they have ruined the channel for us.

I remember your having celebrated your birthday with your husband.

Good tomato crop Tom.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

I think I remember 49. Somewhere back there in the foggy part of my mind.

Amanda, yes the seeds I have are for the orange California poppies. You said you were sending me your address weeks ago.

Dawn my little bulbs are up everywhere. Are yours up? Thin green leaves come up first. Then the blue flower..

Tom, welcome to the group. Lovely bunch of tomatoes.

Jeanette, it looks like I have one variegated bougainvilleas rooting and three dwarf oleanders. I also have about 10 coleus still alive but failing fast.

We have had nice weather all week and I have not been in the garden once. Just have not felt like it and that is weird. I am sure this will also pass. I will return. Sharon

Wow Sharon, Hi!! Just emailed you that you were missed here. PLEASE send me the variegated Bougie and the oleanders. I really would love to have them. Not really interested in the coleuses.

Wish I could come down and maybe help you in your gardening Sharon. Maybe that would help us both get a spark. Sounds like we need one.

How are your Dr. reports? Also, how are those two little pups doing? Cec and Em.

Answer my email.

Those bulbs must be the ones Dawn thought I sent her. I was scratching my head.

Nice to hear from you all and, welcome Tom!!

LOL, Evelyn you are waaaaay off key. LOL How do I know? 'cause the pup is howling.

Happy Birthday Dawn!

Welcome Tom.... I hope your roses do well.... I lost a lovely Claire Austin to the extreme heat we had here this summer.... broke my heart... they are the prettiest white roses. Which roses are you trying to propagate? Nancy

Yeah, you would burn my ears. LOL

Ventress, LA(Zone 8b)

Wormy what kind of bulbs do you have that have blue flowers? If they are the strong color blue, I bet they are georgeous.

Is it too late for me to throw out my poppy seeds since I see spring is too late to plant them.

I put my coleus cutting in water and planted some that had roots. The ones in the water are doing best. I just put fresh water whenever I can. I finally decided to spray my coleus with malithion and get rid of the mealys or let the coleus die. I think its working. The coleus are still alive.

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

Poppy seeds can be sown (direct in ground) in winter, or winter-sowed.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

I will post a photo of the blue flower. Actually a pale blue, but it is still blue. Very invasive. But in Nevada we have very few invasive plants because of water issues. It is my bed time so I will sign off.

Be well, safe and warm. Sharon

Nice pix Tom. Like your site.

My bulbs are not coming up. I saw some one day and then gone. Maybe rabbits are eating them, though I would think the smell would keep them away. They come take over the yard in the night. I need to put out repellant.

Thanks for sharing your blog Tom.... I look forward to seeing the rose when you get some photos.... I love roses. Mine are still blooming here and I know i will have to cut them back next month so I am enjoying the last hurrah! Nancy
