Unable to post pictures to Dave's

Tiffin, OH(Zone 6a)

I'm having an issue trying to post a message with a picture attached. After composing the message, browsing and selecting a picture, I only see the "preview" button. When I press it nothing happens-no preview, no post. I'm not given an option to post without preview and if I hit "back" I lose my whole post. I've had this issue in several forums-latest was "Trash to Treasures" Getting kind of frustrated! Thanks for any suggestions! MWhit
PS: I even had a problem posting this message- things seem to hang up with the "preview" selection.

hmm, have you tried turning your computer off and then re-starting/re-booting?
the one i just did worked ok. i had some issues earlier this year and by doing a re-boot, everything straightened out.

Tiffin, OH(Zone 6a)

I re-boot every day (old habit from work!) so I don't think that is it. I did go to my blog and was able to post a picture there but it took a lllooong time! The same pic I was unable to post I Emailed to my sister with no problem so it isn't the picture file. I have an HP notebook with Windows 7 Premium home edition(64 bit) with DSL from AT&T. I'm going to try again and just leave it set for a while after I hit browse- maybe that is what's running real slow-I'm not very patient and I know it used to post within seconds. I will be back with an update later-thanks for your input!! MW

Have you tried using another browser?
If you're using IE, try Firefox or Chrome.

We've not had any other reports of any difficulties, but I'll keep my eyes peeled for glitches.

i use chrome and since switching over, have had no problems with anything. it is so much faster...way faster than my safari ever was.

Tiffin, OH(Zone 6a)

Ok I think it is just taking a real long time to load from IE- I don't usually re-size my jpeg files for posting -do you? I've posted 2 pics successfully tonight but so slow!
I've never tried another browser -will have to check that out. I'm not real adventurous about changing things on my computer-too afraid to screw things up!! Thanks for your kind suggestions! MWhit

i'm not adventurous either! it took me a while to take the plunge. when you go to google, you should see the chrome ads. it's free and easy to download.

The system automatically resizes anything over 1000 pixels wide, but it really depends on your connection speed as to how long it takes. This one is 3065 X 2452...I'll edit and let you know how long it took to upload. (I'm using Firefox)

Edited to say, this took 30 seconds...not very quick, but the image was pretty big.

mine was 2592X1944 so it also was not small- I'm just glad to know it's just slow loading versus some problem between my photo program and Dave's-the forums are so much more fun when you can share pictures! Again thanks for "talking me through this" MWhit

you know, there is a place on your camera where you can automatically configure your pictures to a smaller pixel. my computer would be instantly clogged and slow if i was downloading that size pictures all the time.

I have 2 Canon Elph which are very similar- I'm not seeing the option to re-set to a different size on them. I know I can do it after I download the picture to my photo program but I don't want to lose clarity. Do I have to create a separate copy then downsize it so I still have the sharp original but also have a copy that is more "downloadable"? Sounds like work to me- I'm too lazy to even re-name most of my pics-then I want to kick myself when I'm trying to find something and everything is identified by numbers! Thanks for your suggestion. MWhit

it should be in your instruction manual. that's how i found it on mine. i have a canon also. it's in the menu part somewhere.
i don't lose any clarity. mine is set at somewhere around 400 x 600 i think.

I keep 2 copies of anything I'm planning on uploading and just ad 'rz' to the image number when I save the second copy. If I decide to upload something not already resized, I either do so, or plan on a longer lag time.

Hope that helps.

wanted to add that here is a picture taken recently from pretty far away and up in a tree. it looks pretty good to me.

this one is 640 x 480. i guess that is what all of mine are set for.

I prefer to keep full sized images too and shoot at the largest size my camera allows.

I keep full sized images, but resize in Photoshop or PhotoZoom to less than 1000 pixels wide before uploading here. I haven't tested the quality of Dave's Garden resizing, so I prefer to use something I know about. Down sampling (down-sizing) while retaining as much quality as possible is a difficult thing to do, and some software does a better job at that than others. I also use a third party JPEG compression program (Box Top Tools' ProJPEG), because I think it does a better job of JPEG compression than Photoshop.

For example, the attached picture file size is only 102,191 bytes (99.7 KB) on my hard disk, even though the picture size is fairly large. Because of its relatively small size, it uploads pretty fast, even though we are on the slower-than-DSL HughesNet satellite dish uplink-downlink (we live in a rural area that does not have cable or DSL).

I notice that the file size grew slightly in the process of getting into the Dave's Garden copyright form. The file size here is 104.14 KB (106,638 bytes), which is still pretty small, and not a whole lot larger than on my system.
