Any suggestions where to learn a little about "lucky pennies?" I inherited a small jar from my dad and noone knows if they were part of his actual coin collection, so I said I'd take it. I'm sure there are books and there is a coin shop in my town, but i think i ought to know something before trying to trade.

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

Thanks! I'll give it a look!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

rosemary i have a friend that is in the coin biz - if you are lookingn to sell them i can put you in touch with him - be warned he will be looking to resell and make a profit

Take them to the coin dealer in your town and ask what he/she will buy them for. The person will say they are worth XYZ, and you ask can you do a little more. They might go up or they might not. Just say: Let me think about it, I will get back with you. Walk out the door and figure the amount he/she gave you and double it. You will be in the ball park for what they are worth.

This weekend we went to a different part of Baltimore, gentrified. There's a vintage shop. You can't imagine the huge variety of things that someone might buy to resell, or just add decor to the shop. Think oddball, like old shoe stretchers, medicial instruments, fifties figurines, disco era LPs, on and on. A whole set of figurines of the presidents, about two inches tall, on a set of steps, only two missing. If you had those two..that thing would probably go up ten times in price.

Rule of thumb for "most" antique re-sellers is dont buy nothing if you cant double your money or more. That is only a rule of thumb. Sometimes I get brave and bid higher then I expected to but still wont go over if I cant double. Here is a prime example.

1930 Art Deco 5 Arm Slip Shade Chandlier I paid $99.11 for it. As we speak I have not lost any money. I will know more in a couple of days. I am expecting a profit of 150. We will see.

My opinion I think its butt ugly - Yak.

Oh - I think it is attractive.

I like it too, if it fits with a whole deco scheme (which I'd never acheive or really go for.

Universities here are pushing Homeland Security- but the jobs are going to returning military who have their security clearance.

So glad I read the privacy policy for this company....this is just downright scary!
"Credit Card Preauthorization
By submitting your credit card information to us or to one of our advertisers, you are authorizing the Company or its agent to periodically verify that your credit card account is valid and has credit available by charging, and thereafter crediting, a small sum to the card."

Do you see that??? periodically verify that my acct is still valid???? Why would they even need to do that unless I'm ordering something???

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I bet that is standard.

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

Thanks for the good advice and offers. I think I'll look into coin sales AFTER the kids have finished their senior year. My dad was a good collector, so there are arrow heads and a few flea market finds, and family memorabilia to look over too.

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

on the news tonight they claim the economy is improving. Is that why gas went up from $3.07 to $3.39 yesterday? In my opinon, jumps like that will kill any improvement that may be happening.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

oddly, the gas price has crept down here this week.

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

Gas really down here too, Sally.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Up or down, speculators in commodities make money. Home heating oil here $3.47. Getting a delivery today. Thanks to a warmer than usual Dec ( 14 days reaching 60 or more degrees Yesterday 62!) I haven't had to turn on my furnace yet.

A big "Thank You!" to all of my newspaper customers who have tipped me at this Holiday time! Their tips have given me the necessary resources to fill my tank and God willing and the creek don't rise, I should have enough oil to keep me and the pipes from freezing this Winter.

Would have been impossible to put together such a large chunk of change with out the generosity and thoughtfullness of my customers. When I told one lady what I was using my tips for this year, she brought me to tears when she offered to make up the difference if my tips weren't enough!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Annoying to hear we are a net exporter this year! Keep it here to lower the price!!

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

An international NGO learned that if the "money" in a village could circulate at least 5 times before it left the village, that the village would break even or better.

1st - the light goes off today. Right now its at 212 bucks. Met my double the money theory.
2nd - gas has gone down here from 2.31 to 2.20 in a week.

and last that makes my hair stand up - US gives over a billion to China to substadize programs. Where does the US get the money? China! What a joke.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Re" money in a village...

When I was 13-14, my dad was stationed at a really tiny lighter-than-air Navy base near the NC Coast, and we kids were bussed into town to school. The townspeople hated the Navy base, so one payday the base Captain had every single sailor paid in cash, and in only $2 bills. Once the townspeople saw the money that came in from that tiny base, the complaints stopped.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

That was very clever of the base Captain.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Great story Darius

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Very cool, except how did they keep the lighter than air base from floating away???

lol

Happy happy happy, My ugly light I bought for 90.11 sold for 315 today. Wish I could do that everyday - sigh

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Wonderful story, Darius.

I wish you many days like that, Sherrie.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

schicken, that is awesome! You rock!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Cool, Sherrie!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Nice Sherrie!! Merry Christmas to you!!!!

Great coup on the lamp!

Here's a sobering question. Which way are we going in this economy? Is the European debt crisis going to get fixed and the losses absorbed or not? I'm getting tired of all the complaints that we don't need state services for people in need because the economy is going to tank. I'm not so sure anyone knows this, so much as there's a political attitude of fear (is this too political to mention?)

Dont you think that "any" economy that tanks will fix itself in time? Hopefully with the right decisions made to head it in the right direction. Fear? That is why I bought a greenhouse 5 years ago and I am here. I saw it coming.

I am a firm believer that the world started turning and turning fast, because of the internet. Prime example is the USPO thats billions in debt.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Just got off the phone with my 85 year old Father in California. He says that the rich HAVE TO BE SO MUCH RICHER because the of the devaluation of the dollar. Makes sense in some strange kind of way. He would also like to blame the national debit on Michelle Obama having "150 employees" - you know, Bess Truman only had 3 assistants! And the war efforts - they are very small - only 1 percent of the national budget. I told him I was googling that last one and if he was wrong - I was emailing him with top priority!

He's not feeling very good - so he is depressed. My little sister will be there tomorrow morning with her adult children and her husband for Christmas breakfast. We will see how she thinks he is doing.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Will be thinking of your dad, AYC. Hoping your sister is tuned in to him.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Hope "dad' enjoys the breakfast.

I think what's happening is partly that international commerce, and the internet, and international telecom, is leveling the playing field worldwide and we first and second world economies are having to give up some ground to the 'third world.'
Commerce took off with containerizing shipping in the 50s.

Here's a thought. How often do you get rid of a piece of clothing that's really worn out, versus out of style/ tired of it? Look at some really old pictures of regular people and see the worn edges. New clothes are so "cheap' now that most people ' go through' tons of clothes, then we sell them the third world peoples by the bag full. There has to be real money in old clothes because we are getting XX faithful monthly calls for trucks that will come to the house for household stuff and clothes.
