DAILY BIRD PICS VOL # 420

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

Rose, stunning pics of the towhee! I saw my first Green-tailed Towhee last weekend but didn't get very good pics. Still haven't seen an Eastern or a Spotted.

Nanny, love your pileated and am totally jealous. Haven't even seen one in ages.

Duc, great shot. Love the sparrows and the kinglet.

It was so nice yesterday to look out the window and see nothing but white-throated sparrows and not a house sparrow in sight. Didn't last long but it was pretty great.

Teddy...... You just have to be consistent in having food available for them. You have to have suet available for them in a place they can access. At my house that is the trees and the platform during the winter. Yes the squirrels eat some suet...sometimes a lot of it but that is the price I am willing to pay to have the pileateds come. I have never seen the Pileated use my birdbath.

I know times are hard....but I really would recommend you save up and get a pole system with a squirrel baffle on the pole. Add a platform and then put suet up there and sit back and wait. Maybe a Christmas gift for both of you to enjoy. Another suggestion would be to get a pole and baffle then hang a large suet feeder designed for the pileated. But you have to have there all the time.

I got my pole system at Wild Birds Unlimited but there are less expensive ones out there.

Rained here the past several days but last night it cleared and got way below freezing. I put the meal worms out on top of the ice that had formed in one of the planter saucers. Mrs Red Belly showed up, chased away the bluebirds and ate all the meal worms.

Really enjoying all of the great pictures. That Towhee is gorgeous Rose. Nanny, how do you attract all of those Pileateds to your house?

South Hamilton, MA

When we moved here in the early 70s there were towhees around. Have not seen one in at least 10 yrs.

Do you have to do anything to rolled oats brfore feeding them to birds? I have a bag full of them and I thought maybe the birds would like them. Are they alright to feed to birds?
