I saw it posted by ge1836 and I think she got it from someone else...maybe Victor.

I actualy dug up about 50 bulbs and got every single one intact. In previous years I would either cut them with a spade or leave them in the ground much to long, hampering their growth, because I was afraid of engaging in lily execution.

That's a real fear.

A friend told me yesterday that lilies have to be moved on a regular basis. With the hundreds I have that seems an impossible task. Does anyone do this on a regular schedule?

I have ammended clay soil, and it is difficult to use a digging fork :(

It is a good thing I like clumps of lilies lol

Thanks. I don't have the rock issue but can't think about digging so many and every few years!

I don't think you have to, although the lilies like it. If you love the clumps, go with it. You might want to consider it if the plants seem to be smaller or crowded. But if you have accumulated hundreds of lilies it can be tough to place them. For me, 3 Anastasia became so beautifully rambunctious. They were growing into shade areas and to close to grasses. So I moved two clumps of them, but ultimately ended up trading them or giving them to people. The same thing happened with Silver Sunburst. It was actually taking on grasses. I started with 3 and I must ultimately had 20 or more in one spot, so with a combination of relocation and gifts I reduced their numbers.

I buy my lilies in no more than groups of three for that reason. But there is definitely something for everyone. After all, I have to save some rom for my roses and peonies!

I can't imagine why lilies would need to be moved. Thinned maybe, but only you feel they're too crowded for your liking.

Because they are growing amongst the roots of trees. Or getting too close to sharp objects.

My Morning Light grases were slicing into my lilies, so I had to move them. It was a genuine problem. It was getting worse each year.

And lilies that are amongst tres can get so imbedded that you can't dislodge them without destroying them or tre roots.

Makes sense to me. Though I have so few trees in the back garden that it won't be a problem for years. Wish I HAD so many lilies it was a problem. lol

Wow, I have been away from DG for a while, but all of these photos are stunning!

Pirl, I love your photos of lilies with phlox. Phlox are one of my favorite perennials since they provide so much color and fragrance for so little care.

If anyone here is interested is interested in rare, antique or unusual cultivars of Phlox paniculata, there is a wonderful nursery called Perennial Pleasures in Vermont that is offering 75 types on their website this year! I have about a dozen types ordered from them this year for spring delivery to incorporate amongst my lilies. I have no affiliation with this company other than being a happy customer. Their website is http://perennialpleasures.net/

Not a day goes by that I do not wonder how my bulbs are faring underground during this strange "winter."

Thanks! I love phlox too. Thanks for the link. I'll look at it with my morning coffee tomorrow.

(Mary) Anchorage, AK(Zone 4b)

Me too. I have only about six kinds of paniculata phlox and maybe three of the sublata. I have arabis also inbetween along the path edges.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I loved your path, planted with the stepables, so much that I copied it as a reference!

(Mary) Anchorage, AK(Zone 4b)

they look good when they spread. I am having trouble getting them to actually fill in the middle and I use scissors to trim them around the stones and give them hair cuts where they grow into the creeping phlox, arbieta, and arabis, or get too thick and tall. Really a great little plant. I almost have the steel path edging covered which was my goal. I thought the edging would keep the creeping flowers on the garden side out of the path, but they just send runners or whatever right over the top. but it makes it look more natural to have them sort of weaving in and out, with help from my scissors. LOL. A lot to be said for a planned 'natural' look.

I'm big on the use of scissors, too, and felt alone until you posted. It's great to use them for creeping phlox!

Loved the phlox site link. It may require a Vermont trip in the fall. Thanks, Ispahan!

I got all excited until I saw that they don't ship to Alaska. That's okay. Many others do.

Chicago, IL(Zone 6a)

Pirl, I am so glad you liked the link for Perennial Pleasures. I find it so hard to contain myself around so many beautiful phlox choices. They seem like such natural companions for lilies.

Oberon46, too bad they do not ship to Alaska. I was in Anchorage last June and loved it!

(Mary) Anchorage, AK(Zone 4b)

June is a nice month. I think it was particulary nice. Went downhill a bit after than. Typical Anchorage.
