I'm behind with six. But toward the end is when the excitement starts. Everyone will be waiting for just one. LOL

One of my favorites! It's a constant bloomer.

Now, if I only would find out a way NOT to kill pretty much any Columnea after a while... LOL 'Firebird' is a STUNNER!
The only way possible to kill Firebird is to keep it wet all the time.My poor plant goes from the Sahara to the 'spa' all the time and nothing happens but a few dropped leaves. It still keeps blooming.

Lynn, I've still got the 'Firebird' cutting, that I think you gave to me. It has done very well this past year, and yes, it can withstand neglect. Yahoo!
Jamie
Great pictures everybody! How is everyone doing in the game? I have 12 so far.
I think I may have sent that to you Jamie. If it couldn't handle neglect,it probably wouldn't last long at my house LOL.
Lynn
I just ordered 18 AV from bluebird greenhouse. They are having a special, buy 9 for the price of 6 for $27.00, but they pick what you get. I love the ones I received! All are nice and healthy. I'd order more next month, but with Christmas coming, I have to restrain myself! lol

53. Rosettiifolia
Unbelievable! I got 13. Haven't been able to check my numbers in a few days and that's quite a pleasant surprise. :)
That's my Petrocosmeas including rosettifolia before the heat took them...

I have 13 also. ^_^
froggie, never mind learning about them, they just get added to a 'want list' or 'MUST HAVE' list. LOL. My list keeps growing, growing, growing!!!!
Hi Olaf,
If you want to replace the Pets, I can send leaves for rosettifolia, 'Shortnin' Bread' and 'Imperial Butterfly'. Happy to do it.
Earle
Earle,
I just wish you could tell me how to keep them alive!
Lynn
Thanks for the offer, Earle but I think that Chicago Summers are just too harsh for them.
P. rosettifolia collapsed within a few days, followed by the others within the next ten days...
It's funny that NONE of my Streps have had any complaints but a little bit of leaf damage in the same conditions with triple-digit-temperatures that even made some Episcias croak...
So, I guess, I'll have to resort to looking at other people's Pets... LOL
Olaf
I have never grown pets, and I can't grow streps at all. I either over-water, or under-water. I have no trouble with African violets and many thanks to Olaf, I have sinningia gutata. It's growing under lights, but I think it's becoming leggy. I'm tempted to cut the top off and try to root it. Then place it right under the light fixture. Maybe that will help. But first I want to see it bloom. LOL
S. guttata is leggy under lights? That's hard to believe. I have mine growing in an East window and it's happily growing and blooming and not one bit leggy - even in the ever decreasing daylight here in Chicago... Same batch of seeds. You can definitely cut the top off and root it. No problem at all. Eventually that will be necessary but not this soon...
These are three seedlings in a 4" pot:
Hi Lynn and Olaf,
My Pets are surviving in a situation of benign neglect. I find that the less care I give them the better they do and when they flower, the show is well worth it. On the other hand, I am killing every Strep that comes my way and I have one Sinn battling for its life. Yet, strangely, the AVs just keep flowering. Go figure! The picture is P. 'Shortnin' Bread.'
Earle
I went and checked my lights. I think I found my problem. One of the bulbs was out. I am going to have to change it. It seems that there is a connection problem. That may be the problem. Or else I expect it to grow like a violet with leaves very close together. I took a picture and it's in a 2 1/2" pot in a light mix. There is another seedling in the pot. I'm going to wait until I see flowers before I cut off the top. LOL. I'm patient.
Hey Earle!
This truly is funny!
Almost all Sinningias are weeds for me. I grow some of my micros undomed without any problem. So are Kohlerias, Primulina tabacum, Diastema vexans and some others. Episcias struggle, Streps and Violets are doing alright and any Petrocosmea or Columnea I have ever touched has died a slow, agonizing death...
Olaf
The slightly contorted stem is actually mostly my fault and the plant doesn't look too leggy. Once you changed the bulb, watch S. guttata take off and bloom. :)
Oh, btw: I just noticed buds on "The Sinningia who thinks she's a Kohleria" - S. nordestina...
Check out the flowers on Alan LaVergne's website:
http://www.burwur.net/sinns/4norMain.htm
I hope that mine won't blast their buds for one reason or another...
