North Central Texas RU October 16th, (Trade Thread)

Grandview, TX(Zone 8a)

Josephine can I please get a phlox from you?

Goldthwaite, TX(Zone 8a)

Josephine, I would love to have a Carolina phlox, heartleaf skullcap, and cedar sage.

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

Josephine,if there is still a Heartleaf Skullcap, I would love one.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

O.K. Steph, Pat and Anna, I will reserve those for you.

Goldthwaite, TX(Zone 8a)

If anyone has salvias surviving and could share cuttings, I'd love to try to root some.

I saw some 'Lady in Red' volunteers blooming yesterday if anyone wants that one. I can take a few cuttings of these salvias: regla (mountain sage), microphylla 'Hot Lips," and darcyi (red mountain sage).

I have a few different colored salvia greggis. Would you prefer if I snip them the day of the RU or try to start rooting them now? Is the cut bottle method still the best way?
I am looking for seeds of the native clematis texensis.( scarlet, leatherflower) I realized that I have many clems, but no native ones.

Goldthwaite, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks, Anna. Since it's only a week until the swap, why don't you just bring the cuttings and I'll start them when I get home. White is the only color of Salvia greggii that I have left. I'm still using the cut bottle method since it is so easy and works well for me.

Grandview, TX(Zone 8a)

What is 'the cut bottle method' ?

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I was going to dig more plants today, but too wet! Amazing!!

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

I am sure others can fine tune this info, but basically, you take a small plastic bottle (taller as opposed to wider) like for soda or water. You cut it in half leaving a little nib so it stays attached, fill the bottom with moist potting soil , stick a pencil in then out to make room for the cutting. So now you have a little dome to keep the rooting humid. I am not sure if you put any holes in the bottom or not.

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, it is amazing that it is too wet to go and dig! Oh lovely rain!

Grandview, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks Anna :)

I do something similar with my cuttings. I put them in a small container and then put them in a produce bag. Tie the top off and set in the window sill. I've also put them on top of the fridge; anywhere where they can get warm. It makes like a terrarium.

Grandview, TX(Zone 8a)

How do you keep them from molding?

Arlington, TX

Banana, clemetis is pretty difficult to start from seed. If you want one, best to order to plants.

I don't let a lot of condensation build up inside. I also sprinkle in some horticultural cornmeal on top.

Arlington, TX

Giving:
cholla-Dennis(rooted) & blue (unrooted)
cedar sage - patrob (only 1 survived)
4 heartleaf scullcap - 2 promised to stephanie and patrob
zexmenia - patrob (have some extras I am bringing if anyone wants them)
cona coffee elephant ears - patrob and banana

I will bring whatever else I find this Monday.

I cant remember what I asked for but am sure I will come home with some plants regardless...

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

I know that they are hard to start, but it will take longer to find a plant to buy! I am on a waiting list at Brushwood.

Arlington, TX

LOL I have been on that waiting list for over a year! Never been contacted once about their plants.

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

I have gotten in stock notification for a few. I had heard they had moved and then there was an act of Round up vandalism that killed off alot.....so you see, at this point, seeds would be good!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I updated my little list, lol
