My Bluestone order shipped today, figures I'm going away for the weekend

Peony roots are arriving at my house, lots of them! Gilbert Wild, then Peony Plus. Klehm, Adelman's, Buck Canyon and Hidden Gardens are all sending roots. Also I purchased a granular volcanic soil additive at a hydroponics store, a 50 lb bag, just for my peonies (hope it makes them grow stronger and more disease resistant). I also found the lily 'nymph' on sale. Fortunately, the plants are leaving my deck faster than they appear there.

Good luck with the new plants....I ordered phlox Lord Clayton in the spring, but it was back ordered...just came, & it's very tiny....

Only ordering I am planning for fall is bulbs.

I need some more tulips....

Celeste, I was glad to find Nymph, as you recommended, and on sale too. I am more than doubling my peonies this year. I'll perfect the entire beds later. Glad to know I'm not the only peony lover around in the Northeast. Now, to beat the early frost that's predicted---In Alaska they dig their holes in advance and keep filler dirt warm until the roots arrive.

Have you noticed the big price jump at Bluestone Perennials? In the spring you could order 3 of one type of plant for between $12.98 and $16.95. With the Fall catalog, all plants are priced as individual units, usually $9.95 each, with price reduction to $9.50 if you order three of the same plant.

Too bad. I thought they had great prices and value in the past.

They changed the packaging, but the cost seems out of line to me.

I didn't notice, I'll need to pull out both catalogs.

I received my order on Friday but was gone all weekend so couldn't plant it

Too bad about Bluestone's new pricing. I have had good luck with them in the past.

Rosemary, I also love peonies. I only have three different varieties so far, but I planted a red double and hope it comes back next spring.

I remembered Old house Gardens when ordering this fall. They wrote that heirloom tulip bulbs last longer in general, so i ordered a few.

I pulled out my Spring catalog and my fall one...all the prices I checked randomly were exactly the same...what plants were you looking at buying that you saw the difference????

Went to Lowe's for mulch today.....Touch Of Gold caryopteris was $2.50.....it came home with me....it was rootbound, but I was able to straighten them out.....

Good catch, Marilyn! You can't beat that! I never seem to find those great bargains. I'm postponing digging up my dahlias to prepare the tubers for winter storage. They are gorgeous right now - 6 feet tall and a loaded cascade of bright red blooms. I can't bear to do it just yet! :(

picked up a couple boomerang lilacs and just ordered two josee from rarefind - both are reblooming - needed to get over min limit for the 30% discount and added a centenial dogwood, yellow and green varigated.

marilyn i store mine in a old cardboard box with wood chips or peat in the basement with EE's

Oooh, I'm excited, Bill, i told Hank to fill the car with anything you haven't planted yet when he drops off your chair today. I like the idea of what's coming my way! :) lol

Marilyn, i cut off the foliage, dig the clumps of tubers, lay them out to dry for a week, then brush off all the dirt from the clumps and put them in a mesh bag to hang in my son's very dry basement all winter. One year I forgot to get them from his house soon enough and they were growing through the mesh. Not good!

For me, I think the dry basement is the key.

Well, my basement was dry until Irene....I have too many I love this year....I'll give it a shot.....

Sure is worth a try!! If they're really dry when you put them in the basement, they might be fine.

Do you dry them outside, in the sun, shade, garage? Not that I have any this year...

i do it in the sun - bring in the garage at night and out again during the day

I think that sounds like a good idea. I usually just put them on the work bench on our front porch, but the sun may have to help me out this year.

That's how I save my glad corms......they come through fine, the dahlias.....:>(

Are glads worth storing over winter if they're shriveled up? Mine are. I planted them late.

If they are heavy for their size, they are OK...if they feel light, throw them away.....

big day yesterday - picked up some knock out roses at HD - ryusen jm and a manfrich honeysuckle at a nursery, then visited a weston nursery location and came home with parade, lemon drop, lollipop, and sparkler from their weston series of late blooming azeala's. starting another big project here and decided to take advantage of the fall sales. these will not be planted until next year.
