Tropical Plants #109 Show your Bloomers !! ;-)
Rita ! It is soooo good to see you posting again. Glad to hear some of your plants are surviving, and Rj was so helpful !
Hopefully you will get even more rain now and can continue to recover !
BIG HUG !
my "little" African Mask that I thought had died last year, and Rachel told me to just let it be and see what happens...
It's in an 8 in. pot and there are pups underneath That big leaf that is now almost twice the size of my hand.
I'm wondering if I should repot it now or wait till spring?
Rita! How wonderful - we all knew you were busy 'fighting the good fight' for your garden. Are you saving your pennies for a really huge rainwater cistern?
So happy you got some rain. Yes, the stripey costus from you has been blooming for weeks, and looks to continue. The second is a big plant but has not bloomed yet. I would love a cutting of your new one there, but don't cut it up too much! What absolutely gorgeous leaves! Tell me the variety and I'll order one myself. You also sent me two cuttings of purple firespike that are nice big plants, but also not blooming yet. Do they need more sun?
Please do let me know if you want anything from my garden! My 'Dauben' water lily is making babies like crazy now - do you have enough water for your pond yet? I am charging up my camera to send pictures of 'your garden in Florida' waiting to return to you.
WE GOT RAIN.
Rita, glad to see you posting again. Randy mentioned someone from DFW area came to pick up some of his treasures. Glad it was you as they will continue to get the correct amount of nurturing. He is a dear person.
Hi, Rita - we missed you!
Thanks for being back with us!
Dear Rita, so glad you are back, missed you so much. Thank Goodness RJ came to your rescue. What a dear friend you have there and alot of friends here.. Do you need any Chalice vine? LOL it is everywhere on the fence, it won't all make it inside. Fire spike is getting big, but still no blooms, It must be a big type shrub, and I will keep potting it up to bigger home as it grows.
Lou, thank God for you that got some rain! Now if the rest of Texas would just get some that would be an answered prayer.
Chances are good now on rain coming on a semi regular basis with fall a couple days away! Hopefully they will be wrong about the extended drought!
The strom on Sunday was great, but I had a few injuried plants. Both my Konjacs have broken leaf stems, a couple of the plumerias were listing in their pots and some of the leaves on the EE's and the banana are quite battered. On the other hand, though I have a morning glory bush trying to bloom. When it flowers I will post pics.
Who sent me seeds of Desert Globemallow? I dmailed a couple of folks, asking this question, but can't remember who the wonderful donor was! This plant is AMAZING!
dyzzy, we have discussed putting in a well several times this past summer.
The ginger is a Variegated Rainbow Costos from 1-stop-aloha on e-bay. Sharing ths plant with you is like insurance, I know where to find a start if needed. From the growth rate of the others you posted, you will have enough for everyone in no time.
The plant in front of the firespike is a Brazilian Plume. The firespike will bloom in the fall and I have them in half day sun. and btw it came from candela in Florida.
joeswife, I missed you guys as well, the best part of my day is seeing what plant made your day and sharing what made mine a good day.
Thanks for the offer of Chalice vine, but mine is coming back strong. I hope the blooms do not abort like they did last fall. Remember not to trim it now if you want to see the blooms this fall.
Rita, I really like that Phil. I believe it is time for another purchase! Again...Welcome back!
Rita, are the white flowers plumeria pudica in your last picture? It is so delicate and graceful! Can't wait for mine to bloom.
I am delighted to be part of your 'insurance' program. Would love a start of your variegated costus when you have one. One-aloha seem to only be offering plumerias on eBay right now.
I'm dividing these variegated broms tomorrow, if you'd like a start? They're very drought tolerant, I've found.
Rita, I'm so sorry for your loss. I have lost 2 very close friends to cancer and I know the void a good friend leaves. God bless you.
dyzzy, you are correct, that is Plumeria Pudica. I should have posted the blooms from last year, they were magnificent. It is just now begining to put out a few blooms, I have thoroughly enjoyed this plant, a bd present from Texasbigleaves.
Do you have any Costos speciosa spiral gingers? If not, I can include a start with the rainbow ginger.
I was fortunate to get a start of your variegated bromeliad from RJ, but would appreciate another chance at growing one of your Dauben water lilies, I lost the first one you sent.
ardesia said that you have to try a plant 3 times before giving up.lol
This is another star in my garden, Brunfelsia magnifica. It has 3" flowers and blooms throughout the year.
Rita, I have 3 different types of costos, one of which has not bloomed yet. Don't know if any are costos speciosa. But I'm glad to grow any costos you'd like to send me. They seem to really like my garden conditions and are easy for me to grow.
I have several little leaf offsets on Dauben now, so will be glad to send you some. I can imagine it would have been a battle to keep a pond going through all those 100+ days you had. You might have to overwinter them in the hoop house, since we're starting them rather late in the season. My pond got down into the 40's last winter and the one before, and they did fine, but I suspect 30's might do them in.
Because of our extreme drought and high temps, my brugs are just hanging on. Usually at least 6 feet, now maybe 2 feet at the most. No blooms. If we have another super cold winter like the last....well, that will be all she wrote. I love looking at yours. There is always "next year".
I don't know what to say... the Brunfelsia magnifica has been tried by me three times. Today I looked back at ebay purchases and website purchases lists and acknowledgements and can't believe how much money I have lost thru trying to push my zone, here. I can't believe I have kept what I have still going. I am so glad I get to come here and see all the beautiful things growing that I can not grow.
Rita, it is so hard to lose a friend. I am sorry for your loss. I hope you find comfort in knowing how much your friend loved you.
Lou, please let me help you with a brug if you want to try one next year. Please.
James that is beautiful, what is it's name?
I have some dozen plumerias and with the 2 inches of rain we got Monday, we also got hail and high winds. Took a lot of the leaves with it. Beginning to look at more and more Texas natives.
Those are gorgeous, Debra!!
