morning glory color question

sun city, CA(Zone 9a)

first, this is my first year every growing morning glories. i planted seeds of what were supposed to be clarks heavenly blue, heavenly blue and a pink one i dont remember the name of. all of them, every one, bloomed pink. i have tried to decide if they were 1. mislabeled, 2. only the pink ones germinated, or 3. something in the soil made them all pink. i am thinking it is most likely something in the soil. i love the color i did get, and they grew everywhere but i am guessing i should have the soil tested to see what it is either missing or has too much of. i purchased some wonderful colors last week but i am not sure about planting them, in case they all go pink on me. maybe i should plant in pots with mix instead of in my soil. help please. the soil here is mosly clay, sand or decomposed granite or a mix of all three. the water is from a well, not city water.

Risingcreek, I promise you your Heavenly Blues did not turn pink. Most likely, they did not germinate for some reason. Your beautiful pink with the reddish bars is Crimson Rambler. Sometimes the color can vary to
Pink or Rose. Heavenly Blue will bloom blue no matter whats in the soil.
You're vine is lovely.

thank you for the name. i had no clue. i do love the color. ok, so i will plant away with the others i bought. i remember now what i was thinking about, when i was a kid we all had hydrangas in front of our houses, some pink some blue and i was told that something was added to the soil to change the colors, cant remember what. i guess that has been in the back of my head all these years.

will they reseed?

Becky is better at answering these questions than I am.. Purpureas reseed better than anything else, your Crimson Rambler is a purpurea but the Heavenly blues are a tri-color species. If you're worried about re-seeding, save a few sds and go ahead and pull the rest of the pods off and get rid of them. Even in my zone 7, one of my nils reseeds itself every yr. If they do reseed, its easy to pull them up right after they sprout.

Some of the Hydrangeas
turn blue in acid soil, pink in alkaline.

thank you so much. i want them to reseed so that is cool. will also save some seeds.

RCreek, try your Heavenly Blue sds again next yr.
You might want to get in on Beckys annual sd swap. A good way to get you started with several different mg's.
I can share Pandurata sds with you. It s a beautiful species that comes back on it's own each yr.
White with pink./lavender throat. But it takes 2 yrs to bloom usually.
Just dmail me

risingcreek - Welcome! Jackie is right about the I. purpurea seeds making volunteers from dropped seeds. And if they sprout where you don't want them, just pull them up! They are annuals and reseed readily!

I haven't decided if I am going to do a seed swap this year. Not sure if there are enough participants to do one this year. We need at least 10 people.

i would love to take part but the pink flowers are the only seeds i would have to trade unless i go online and buy some. would that be ok?

I wouldn't buy anything at this time unless it is something for yourself. I doubt there will be enough people to participate in a seed swap this year. And most people who have participated in the past got a lot of different seeds and may not need any more. I have enough to last me a lifetime. (Lots of I. purpurea seeds from a past swap!)

Becky, I'm sending her some pandy sds and I will include a few of my nils to get her started.
You're so right, I don't think we will have 10 people willing to participate. Like you, I have
so many, I will never get them all planted so not a problem for me. :-)

Jackie - That is really nice of you! She'll love your pandies by the 3rd year! That is one species well worth growing!!! And I know she will love the large blooms of the I. nils!
