2011 Ruby-throated Hummingbirds Vol. 3

Stafford County, VA

Rather unusual pose. I think he was startled by the click of my camera's shutter. (Or should I say "she"?) Not really sure with that one.

Caught this one with its beak in an unusual position and maybe dozing just a bit.

Grand-Falls, NB(Zone 4a)

Very nice Pelle!!! The first red spot, is always in the middle of the throat. I've never seen one yet, where it would start elsewhere.
Cute Nanny, I can see, she spotted you.:)

Crocosmia, are very enticing to the Hummers.

Nice pelle & burn!! My Crocosmia didn't do anything this year so out they came!! Just don't have much luck with things the hummer like. Have got to find something!

Could you please come and pose when there is good light??

He is a ruffed up little cutie!

Sandusky, OH

Great shots of your hummers everyone! The males will be leaving here within a day or so...the winds will be coming out of the north bringing cooler temps.
Today it was 100 in the backyard, I turned on the sprinkler in hopes to get one to take a shower/bath but they would not allow each other to do so...it was funny as I watched the repeated chasing so no one gets to the sprinkler. lol Here's what I got though.

trying to get closer to the sprinkler...not going to happen..lol

Excellent shots Burd! Love those open beaks!

Mandeville, LA(Zone 8b)

A question to all fall hummer watchers. My fall hummers seem to only feed from the feeder, and ignore the delectable plants that I have positioned below. Is that your exprience also?

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

GG, not at all. Mine seem to distribute their time equally around the garden. Although, they do seem to enjoy the feeders when available.

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

Wow, I hadn't checked this thread since I got back from vacation. What great photos everyone!
Burd, I like your shots with the bill open too.
Burn, what beautiful shots with that gorgeous flower.
Dave, those flight shots are amazing.

This is by no means a silver lining, but the smoke from the fires in Grimes and Waller counties made for some interesting/scary golden light this evening.

Preening.

Gazergirl, my experience is that the hummers do prefer the feeders but when they fight or when there are tons of bees, they go to the plants.

Looking at me through the smoke light.

When I got back from SD, the drought and extreme heat had killed most of my flowering plants. This swallowtail was taking turns at the hummer feeder.

I don't know what this Red-eyed Vireo was doing but he kept stretching toward the feeder. I thought maybe ants, but I don't see any in the photo. It's amazing what hummer feeders attract.

Beautiful shots of the hummingbirds, Elphy. Prayers go out for those folks in the path of the fires. Love the swallotail on the hummer feeder. Such rare happening! How neat is that even the Red-eyed Vireo seems to want a piece of the nectar. lol

I still have several males that visit every few minutes. I doubt they will be here much longer.

Geez what big, long tonue he has! Great pics. Cousin Dave.

Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

Beautiful photos everyone!

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Oooops, I meant to say "What big long tongue he has!" lol. Sorry folks on the typo. Friday, I had a swamp of hummingbirds here. Roughly a half dozen are seen at any given moment. Usually there were only 2 or 3 at a time. Like today.

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

Beautiful photos everybody! Dave, love that ruby throat shot.

I appreciate all of you training these fellows before they fly down here. One kept flying up to me while I was sitting on the patio. Finally, I had my arm stetched across the top of the loveseat and he flew to my hand. Clearly someone was hand feeding him!

Took a bunch of photos of hummers in the shade today. This one was right outside my window. I had to lighten it up a ton though.
