August Photos and Chit-Chat

Chicago, IL(Zone 6a)

Hey Tommy!

Someone got bitten by the Sinningia bug! :)

Right now, I don't have any S. pusilla seeds but I have two plants blooming on and off. In this Summer heat around here, none of the pods developed to maturity but now that it has cooled down, chances are greater for that to happen. I'll keep you posted.

The thing with micro mini seeds is that they are best when fresh. Their viability declines fast and sometimes when you buy them you get old seeds that won't germinate.

However, Sinningia pusilla is extremely easy and quick to raise from seeds.

I read reports where it took about two months from seed to first flower...

Beautiful pics everyone!!!!

Oh, nooooo....I was given Sweet Dreams and it is in bloom. They are yellow blooms :( Maybe an Aiko by accident?

Connie

Connie,
If I sent it I have Aiko, but leaves are much smaller than Sweet Dreams.

Northeast, MO(Zone 5b)

Does your Sweet Dreams bloom yellow too? There were two baby plants so I divided it. One has pretty much quit blooming and the other is just starting in. Both are definitely yellow. I think I got my Aiko from you too but it hasn't bloomed yet. Leaves look to be about the same. We are getting ready to leave so I can take a pic and post it tomorrow if you want me too.

No Sweet Dreams has a lavender bloom. It must be a different one.I will look.

Hi Sis,
The yellow one is Ebernea.I would love to see the picture.

Lynn

Northeast, MO(Zone 5b)

Well, 45 pics later and I still can't seem to catch the yellow in the blooms lol. As the last ditch effort, I took it outside to see if the natural light would help. NOT!! Here is the first pic:

Here is a side view:

They are definitely yellow blooms but I just can't seem to pick it up.

Sis, I will have to go check but I think you sent me the Sweet Dreams and Ebrenea????? Same plant? It is pretty and easy to grow :) Do ya need any back? LOL

How gorgeous to have a yellow blooming Chirita (Primulina). I've never seen one live.

This is just Starburst

Optimara Harlequin is one of my favorites. It grew really large with a mophead of flowers a couple years ago and got Best in Class. Since then, it has sorta gone down hill (leaves are brittle and splotchy), but the flowers remain lovely.

Oh, btw, my camera date is messed up. I just took these pics today.

Northeast, MO(Zone 5b)

It's not "just Starburst", Jamie. (giggle) It is a very pretty Starburst along with Harlequin :) Aiko has not bloomed for me yet but the one above has passed it in growth and is getting big in height. Sis must have given it a special hug before she sent her to me lol. It really is a beautiful plant, I just can't get the color right.

This is Sweet Dreams. I sent you Silver Surfer,Sweet Dreams,Crossroads,Sinensis,Kacu,Ebernea and Party Doll. You already had Aiko.It has to one of those on the list. The leaves on mine are a little pale.I just moved it away from the lights.

Connie and Jamie,I love the pictures!

Jamie,
I sent you "just" Starburst ^_^.Did Diane Marie make it? I think Harlequin is a beauty. This one is Rhapsodie Suzi. The foliage doesn't look too hot, because when Lane sent me a box the post office lost it for several days! They all survived and are coming back to health.
Oh shoot....can't find it.

Lynn

Now I am scratching my head. From the distance you took that pic, it does look like my Sweet Dreams. Hmmmmm...it has that purplish on the side then goes to yellow for the main bloom. LOL...only at my house!!!! Yep, you sent me those Sis, but I didn't get a Party Doll. Well, whatever it is, I am not sure but I do know I love it :)

I ordered Blue Dandy from David and I got my fist bloom on it. Almost waited too long to take a pic LOL

Oh, Blue Dandy is nice. I've been coveting that one and Darth Vador, but don't want to spend more $ on this crazy addiction yet!!!

Thanks Lynn for reminding me. Yes, those you sent me are really coming along. They had to survive some experimentation from me when I alkalinized my water a tad with some lime. A couple of the Chirita's didn't think that was such a hot idea, especially Naine Argente. It lost 2 bottom rows of leaves with rapid yellowing and the surviving rows are droopy with some brown ends.

How are everyone's trailers doing?

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

It's a beauty Connie!

Jamie,
I have had certain Chiritas give me trouble all the time.I have given away a lot of them and am trying to grow just a few favorites and would like to get more rosette types with unusual leaves.
My trailers you sent WERE all gorgeous and full of blooms.I had them on wicks and let them dry out so I could leach the soil. When I put them back on wicking about 4 of them totally collapsed and died, from edema I think. The rest are looking great! BTW,I was only teasing about Starburst.I thought it was cute the way you said it is 'just Starburst' ^_^.

Look what I got in the mail today. Micros, micros and more micros...

Top row: Sinningia 'Bright Eyes', pusilla 'White Sprite', 'Lil' Tiger', 'Little Wood Nymph'

Bottom row: Sinningia 'Star Eyes', 'Hircon', 'Treva McDaniels'

I just never get tired of those little guys. :)

Oh my gosh...what a haul! They are darling.

Thanks Lynn!

That speciosa is GOREGOUS, Connie! Wow!

About yellow Chiritas: The only one yellow of the more common rosulate Chirita species that I remember is C. eburnea "Yellow" (aka. C. lutea - I don't know if anyone is certain on its identity).

If I remember correctly, it's one of the parents of 'Aiko', which should be the most commonly grown yellow, rosulate Chirita hybrid.

Poughkeepsie, NY(Zone 6a)

bsimpson1972, Where do you buy your Sinningia? Do you have a link please?

Chicago, IL(Zone 6a)

Well, these came from a trade - as most do.

Then I buy at shows, grow from seeds and, of course, there's ebay.

Other than that:

davesviolets.com
violetbarn.com
lyndonlyon.com

Those are my main sources.

However, micro minis are usually pretty hard to come by because nobody wants to prop them (although that's ridiculously easy) and vendors usually have very limited supplies...

What they are going for on ebay is beyond belief! $15 for a single plant is not unusual!

I got lucky and bought S. concinna for $6 and 'Mighty Mouse' for around $8 on ebay.

The best way to get micros is in trades and at shows or, in case of the species, by seed (which is quick and easy).

Hi all! Love the photos as always. Hope everyone is doing well and has managed to stay somewhat cool this month.

kohleria 'Manchu'...not crazy about it but it's sweet.

Chrysothemis friedrichsthaliana. This is the second one of the seedlings that I grew to size.

Hey Heidi!

K. 'Manchu' is a stunner when in full bloom and the plant literally covers itself in flowers. :)

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

OK...that Flickr photo of kohleria Manchu gives me lots of inspiration, Olaf!

My plant is loaded with buds and I'll take another photo when more are open. The leaves are not nearly as dark as the Flickr photo.

Your chrysothemis grown from seed is so nice..from seed to bloom is always such an accomplishment.

episcia 'Strawberry Patch'...I continue to grow this one and is a favorite.

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Great pictures Heidi and Olaf.Heidi, does that Episcia grow out in the open, meaning not a huge humidity requirement.

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Lynn, I grow Strawberry Patch in the open along side the other gesneriads. It's wick watered the same as all the others.

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Thanks Heidi.
I know red/dark pink ones such as Debary's Embers grow fine with the rest of the Gessies, but it seems the light pinks need a lot higher humidity.

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Lynn, do you grow Debary's Embers? If so, do you like it?

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Yes,very much.I just sent out some babies and several stolons, but I wil be glad to save the next ones for you if you like.I love the flower color.
