Got stung this morning

Pittsburgh, PA(Zone 5b)

I usually don't get stung. I leave them alone, they leave me alone. But it was early and they were just coming out - I figure they were still lethargic. These things have taken up residence in the post that my front gate latches to. I'm certain they're ground dwelling because they come and go from this hole. What are they?

I can plug the hole when they're all in there - not sure if they have another exit. I'll arrange NOT to be there when they might emerge mad. Just want to know who I'm dealing with.

There are A LOT of different flying guys shaped like this here, all with different markings. The second one that got me this morning was a rusty colored one that was apparently riding on the leg of my shorts until I squatted on the ground and trapped it between there and my big fat belly. THAT one hurt more than the stripey one. Still hurts a little...... Not used to getting stung. It's been at least one decade if not plural decades......

They look like the common paper wasps that were nesting in the hollow spaces of our raised bed walls. They are quite aggressive when you get too close to the nest and I could hardly go out in my garden any more because the walls were full of nests. We had to take the rocks off the top of the walls and fill the walls with concrete. Our wasps are least active early in the morning so that's when we would evict them. I've never seen a rusty colored one though.

I agree with Paper Wasp. Possibly, European Paper Wasp. There are a few red/rusty colored wasps. Any chance of a pic for comparison?

I don't know where the rusty ones live, so no picture - yet.
I'll see if I can catch the suckers.
The sting area swelled up and turned red.
STIILL IS - over 48 hours later - - - - -
First it hurt.
Now it itches.

Only a site reaction? That's good. Have you put anything on it? Something with cortisone in it is what I use.

I just spray it with Dermoplast (sp?) at bed time. It worked on the poison ivy I got last year.
It STILL itches - been a week tomorrow - but is too tender to scratch.

Possibly a yellow jacket ?
