I loved the pink nicotiana her called Niki Pink. Pam gave me some seeds to this and also for Nicotiana Langsdorfii and N. Sylvestris. Thanks, Pam! I'm going to give her some seeds of Angelica archangelica. Anyone else want seeds? It's a very dramatic biennial. I just love it! Mine did not get watered much once it was established and it still did fantastically well and huge. Seeds do best with stratification first.
Here's a link to that Angelica: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/461/

Pam, this is the Nicotiana that I got from Annie's. http://anniesannuals.com/plt_lst/lists/search/lst.srch.asp?prodid=723&srch_term=nicotiana
The gardens have really come alive since I last visited!
WOW, so pretty!!!!!!
Wow, Karen! So many gorgeous pictures inspired me to buy a new camera and look for workshops and seminars. Unfortunately the only courses I could find for now are on weekends, and I won't give up my gardening time, have to wait until we close the house for the winter. Jerry loved some shots so much he immediately sent a few off to long-distance friends who have known and loved the house and property for years.
The big clump is a globe thistle. It and two others were there when I arrived. I've pulled out many more and when I don't get around to deadheading I find seedlings everywhere.
So funny how some babies we call volunteers and some we call invasive... I have long lists of each, some inherited and some of my own doing.
I also bought Spinosad... Thanks for the tip.
I'll send the thalictrum seeds as soon as they're ripe...
Also thanks for not showing my weeds (unless you know where to look, I did see a few spots)...
For the Angelica, maybe winter sowing is the best?
A great visit!
Pam
Pam, I'm glad you guys liked the pics so much, and that's great that you're going to do some photography classes. Sounds like that will be fun.
I thought maybe that big plant might be a type of thistle. Thanks for the ID on it.
I think wintersowing would work well for the Angelica. You could just sow them in the late fall directly in the garden and you'll have seedlings coming up in the spring. Did I mention that they are biennial? They will bloom the second year and then die.
Karen
Lovely!!!!! Your hard work has paid off Pam, everything looks great!!!!!!!!
Thanks for sharing Karen. :)
No problem. :-)
what a great tour.. thank you for posting them
You're welcome.
Karen, that nicotiana is what I thought from your description. I love them all, as you saw when you were here. I do try to restrict myself a little, this year I have only 4 types from seed, and a couple of others I couldn't resist from a local nursery.
I think your Angelica is the one I used to have in Southampton. The one I have now was a disappointment when it finally flowered without ever becoming the statuesque and slightly startling presence I remembered. I'll be sure to keep the big ones going!
The thalictrum, too, can be sown when the seeds are ripe. These three plants are from the original plant I had in Southampton a few years ago. I sprinkled seeds in a small area and a bunch popped up in the spring. They haven't self-sown here, though, maybe it's been too weedy. I think this year I'll try them in WS containers and see if that's better.
Marilyn, things keep changing around here. You'll just have to come back...
Thanks everyone!
Pam
oh shoot Pam.. we can load you up with seeds.. whatcha want???
Hmmmmmmm..... Whatcha got? Lol. Seriously, I was very ambitious this year because of DG, and although there were some failures, I consider it successful overall. So I'm open to more experimentation...I have a lot of holes to fill!
Pam
pink & white cosmos, nasturtium, petunias, salvia, 4 o'clocks are a piece of cake to grow.. I have tons of annuals.. I usually have tons of strawflowers.. but not this year.. only 1 white one self seeded .. going to have to start over next winter
Pam, I don't save a lot of seeds, but I did save those Angelica seeds. Would anyone else like some? Pam, you and anyone else who would like some please dmail me your address.
Pam, I think I'm falling in love with nicotiana myself. Oh, and I especially like anything tall, tall, tall and big. Anything that makes a statement.
Karen
this one is my fav.. smells great in the evening too

Those sound great, Allison!
Karen
Allison, I do white hanging pots, and I wasn't thrilled with my Storm petunias this year, they didn't cascade enough. What type do you like? I love salvia, especially the taller ones. I've never grown four o'clocks, they look interesting.
Cosmos and nasturtiums are always in my gardens, I have a good supply. This year I tried a few n. Butter and cream, really different and lovely. I'd still rather use the traditional colors in salads, though. I also wouldn't be without Verbena Bonariensis. I love how the color glows from a distance even though the plants seem so ethereal up close. if anyone's interested I'll have lots of seeds...
Pam
I bought rainmaster petunias this year.. from select seeds... just love them.. they are huge!!!... I don't know if I bought bum seeds last year.. but I had a whole tray of seeds not germinate.. 1st time I ever had a problem with tunias .. but prism sunshine and tidal wave silver are my favs
Pam , your property is just enchanting. All the gardens are just wonderful.
Pam, I wouldn't mind having some seeds of the verbena bonariensis. I love it, too.
Karen
I'll send you some this fall. I've started a list so I don't forget...
Pam
oh I will have tons of balloon flower seeds if you want them
I would loooove some! What can I give you?
Do wave petunias cascade? From what I've read, they're bushy and will climb. I don't see anything about how they are in hanging containers.
I must say, Karen's pictures make it look like there are no holes in the garden....but I know where they are!
Pam
I normally have a few cascades .. but not this year.. well I will have to go look which self sowed in one of my containers.. and double check though
I ordered rain master- it looks perfect! I also ordered quite a lot of other stuff...funny how that happens...
Pam
I am amazed on how long the branches are getting.. would be a good one for a garden bed.. will take a pic for you when I get a chance
Thanks to Karen for posting these pics of Pam and Jerry's gorgeous property. Wow has your work already paid off! It is just a stunning place where I imagine you may get to relax sometimes. Makes me think about real estate.
The thalictrum reminds me of 'black stockings' which I got as a seedling from Bluestone this year. Its not half so thriving in its pot on my deck but my question for locating it will be will be just how much sun and water does it really want? As I move it around my deck , it's getting nearly half day of sun.
All of your plants look so very happy and thriving.
Hi nutsfordaylily
Beautiful garden you have there.
Numbers 20 and 21 the yellow Aconitums are Aconitum Lycoctonum. They look better planted amongst other plants so that they can clamber through.
Steve
Thanks, Steve! Karen took the pictures of my garden on a recent visit. I've been spreading it around since I found one in a remote section, and it's been helping me by re- seeding in various other places. This volunteer clump is behind a row of hosta Francee which got higher than I expected and hid the astilbe I originally had there. It's between the thalictrum and an aruncus that hasn't grown in yet. But I bet it would look great growing in with Angelica archangelica, which I'm also planning to put in that bed. Digitalis grandiflora also put itself in that bed, another happy addition that glows out from the dark when it's doing its thing...
Pam
Gorgeous pics of a loverly garden retreat. Glad you are enjoying it.
Very nice! I enjoyed the tour! If ou need to get rid of soe Globe Thistle plant the in my yard. I've tried them a few times in a few different spots and they always end up dieing! So weird..
