a bright red candle melted too much and spread wax over my bright maple dining room table..the wax came off easy...but underneath is a bright red stain!!!! I think its totally ruined now... i have a solution soaking on it right now but it lightened it a little, but not much and you can still see the stain. its a BIG one, a little spread out but about the size of a dinner plate i guess. anyway, is it ruined or is there a way to get out the stain? the wood is finished very nicely, i bought it that way...but i wonder if I could sand off the very top surface to get the stain off and refinish the top??? Any help is dearly appreciated!
P.S. CoCo- I know....I know.....
HELP!!! Candle Stain!!
Hi cocoseed I don't know if this will work on wood but try putting a towel on the spot and take your steam iron, over it a few times. It works on carpet, at this point it's worth a go.
try putting a brown paper bag on it and a towel over it, then use iron. don't use steam though as it may harm the wood. I don't know anything else to do :o(
Ok,my dear.
flowox is on the right track here but will give you step by step instructions. Wake up and listen.
Get your iron out.....do you have one first off?
Turn it on,and while the iron is heating up, gently peel off as much of the wax as you can.
Then place 3 or 4 layers of paper towels OOR brown paper grocery bags on top of the wax that remains. Hold the hot iron HALF an INCH or so over the paper, but don't actually touch the iron to the paper(doing so could burn the surface of the table).
As the candle wax melts, the paper will absorb it.
Remove the paper and repeat the process if necessary.
Try this and see if it helps any.
(Mother knows best)
By the way,DD,don't throw away that candle, can melt down and make a smaller one.
ok i will try the paper bag and iron thing. i got off all the wax completely....just left a stain behind but maybe i can doak the stain up with the paper and all. thanks for the help i will let u know if it works!! :-)

I used to work for a professional cleaning company and am all too familiar with this problem. What you are actually dealing with is the dye from the candle, not the wax. In order to get the dye out of the grain of the wood, first try a product called "Goof Off", or "Goo Gone". Dab some onto a clean white towel (cotton, not paper) and then slowly work from the outside of the stain inward, stroking inward as you go. If it is working you will instantly see the red dye being transfered from the wood to the towel. If that doesn't work you can try making a solution of the product from Rit Dye that removes red stains from your laundry. It's a liquid that comes in a small white bottle that you add to your laundry. Make a solution and use it exactly the way I explained above. It's available at Wal-Mart. If that doesn't work, contact a local representative for "Furniture Medic". They are able to fix many "oops" at a fairly reasonable cost, and usually without totally stripping and refinishing the table. Let me know what happens. KendraSue
Hey Kendra thanks I have goo gone I will try that. And hey its great to see ya posting don't see ya around much. Did JSS put you to work too? lol
KendraSue, good to see you again. Just called my DD and told her about it so she is going to try it and see how it works and will let you know. Thanks you for the suggestion here. This is one hint that I will put in my folder.
I don't get on here as much as I would like to. I am a full time stay at home mom with 4 boys, ages 13, 11, 16 months and 4 months. My husband is also at home as he injured his back at work last December and we have struggled to get him to a point for surgery, we are still waiting for the work comp insurance company to give him the go ahead. I just became a consultant with Discovery Toys and work in several ministries in our church, so I stay pretty busy. No, JSS didn't put me to work, but she probably could have used the help. WOW was she ever busy when I stoppe in there last week. Hope that something works for your table. Keep me posted.
KendraSue
CoCo,
I've got a million of them. I'm almost as good as "Helpful Hints from Heloise". haha. If anybody ever has any cleaning, stain, or housekeeping problems, just drop me an e-mail.
KendraSue
thanks KendraSue! I just tried GOO Gone because I already had it. It took MOST of the dye away the only part left is the thinker darker part where the candle wax built up most. I'm sure if I had tried this right away it would have taken it all out and i would never have thought to use goo gone on my table with its good finish,.,if anything its even shinier now! Most of it came out with goo gone i think i will go search for the Rit Dye next and try it, since the candle was so red. If THAT doesnt work, I will call a furniture 'medic' and see how much they cost. The GOO gone definitely works for this though. thanks KendraSue for the help!
Try murphy oil soap it might help a little.
You may have to try the steps you have done already and just keep working throught it again. Try Formby's furiture cleaner as well we had to use it when we had a fire to get the black off our furiture from the smoke.

Best to treat a stain or a spill as soon as possible. The longer you wait the more the stain sets in.
i would have...but so much wax spilled over i had to let it cool before i could lift it off easily. most of it came out...you cant see it unless you are sitting at the spot closest to it.
I have not idea if this will help your current situation or not, porlly not.
My DD, 2, got creative with a black permanant marker on my walls and carpet. The walls I can paint..teh carpet was a nother story. I didnt ever try to get it out until DH came home with some KRUD KUTTER, in a srap and he got most of the marker out of hte carpet. I was amazed!
