Garden Projects #6

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

You can fly to Nantucket. 15 min from Hyannis. Fast ferry is 1 hour. Seasickness isn't nice. I am lucky. Patti

The fast ferry sounds like something I can do....the fast ferry to Block Island didn't bother me. Yes, you are lucky, Patti. My friends talked me into a cruise to Bermuda.....72 hours of misery. Going home, the doctor gave me an injection....better, but still not able to leave the bunk.

Another beautiful day in the garden. Still cleaning and weeding, but the weather has been so warm that lots of plants are not ready to be hacked back just yet.

The first bud on the reblooming iris bloomed today, but there are at least 5 more buds ready to burst. It had been a bit damaged by a light frost, but pretty to see. So weird. Deer ate one bud last night. It is Tall Bearded Iris 'Harvest of Memories'.

Still lots of roses on many bushes, but old Rosa New Dawn is pumping them out.

I dug up the canna today as they finally got a touch of frost and have stored them for the winter. I planted them too late last summer so blooms were minimal. I will start them off inside this spring if I remember them squirreled away in the crawl space which I didn't last spring. Patti

Here are some of the beds as of this afternoon. I am heading off to Boston and Vt for a few days so unless DH wants to work without me, the beds will have to wait until next week for more work. We moved some stuff which I am sure isn't the best of plans so late, but I had the urge to get it done today. It is suppose to rain tomorrow so that will help. I hate sorrel, tire of weeding it. I should make soup. Patti

Here are my helpers, except that the sleeping white one destroyed a newly moved oak leaf hydrangea today about 3 minutes after we planted it. She chewed off all three stems that had been about 4 feet tall. She did leave a good 6 inches so maybe she was just pruning it for us. grrrrrrrrrrrr. We dug up and move 4 others which she ignored but she got the best one. Patti

Here are more of the cleaning efforts, but I didn't take shots of all the beds and some are still really not put to bed. Getting there. There are some evil big Burning bushes that I have yet to rip out. I do love them. Patti

Patti, your gardens are so lovely, I think I'd never want to leave if I were there. Your beautiful helpers didn't dig up much.

I am planning for next year. Already I've learned what cultivars are best to make a hardy camellia archway, and what kinds of cages are needed to protect the young shoots from rabbits and other rhodents. Don't know if I'll be around for all the years needed to have a mature garden.

Nice Patti!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

really nice patti - i have not even started clean up here

Thomaston, CT

I'm not cleaning up! I've done enough raking & hauling of branches & twigs, the garden will have to wait until spring. Love the photo of Patti's sleeping collie....she did her pruning, now it's nap time!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Me neither. Spring work. Hopefully, my knee will be close to 100% by then.

Donated my large garden cart and an extra rain barrel to the extension today.

Because we plant the beds with bulbs, I have to clean in the fall or it will look horrible when the tulips begin to dance through the beds. With all the warm weather the weeds were growing like, a um, weeds.

Victor, I hope your knee is finally fixed come spring. I have been starting to have my right one go a bit wonky of late, I do hope it holds up as I don't want more surgery. The fixed left one seems good. I got out the old brace the other day to give it a bit of support and that seemed to help.
But I know down the road I will need it fixed by the good doctor.

I am now up in Boston about to load a kiln of pottery, mostly flower pots, so no more garden shots for a few days. Have a good week end all.Patti

Thomaston, CT

Oh, that sounds like fun...the potting, not the knee surgery....I'm sure mine will have to be done some day, but I keep walking the 2 miles every day & it seems to help.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Don't get it unless you need it! Exercise def helps.

I'm a chicken when it comes to surgery...had too many operations for me....a CAT scan a few years ago showed a hole in my left knee....the surgeon said "when it breaks, I'll replace it". Easy for him to say!

I cant believe I went back on my own words "no more garden space" Yet here I am with 2 extentions of the TreePeony garden.
This is the other side of the island on the street side. I plan to fill with giant hostas and heucheras and astilbes maby an iris or 2.

Sorry deb-k .I have to confess ,its nice to have the choice.
