The fun begins!

Oh, dearie, heal well. One- handed watering and admiring your new oasis is on the order of the day.

PERTH, Australia

That's awful, BeaHive. I'm glad nothing was broken and here's hoping the bruising heals quickly. I believe chardonnay is very good for bruises, so sit back and with your one good hand, toast a wonderful project completed. Congratulations to Jamison and crew. What a wonderful work ethic they have.

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

thank jan & margaret. it still is very stiff and sore this am. i am more of a merlot & cabernet lady...but if ya think it will work i am willing to give the chardonnay a try too!! lol! off to see if i can get a few things watered. good thing i had the hose out yesterday and couldn't roll it up to put it away . that should help some.

Virginia Beach, VA

Awful!! Glad nothing id broken. Warm baths should help with tylenol. Take care.

Bea

so glad nothing is broken. You need to sit by your new creation and just heal. I hope you are feeling better soon.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Margaret probably would normally suggest champagne, perhaps she was starting you out on the light dose.

I myself prefer chocolate for my achiness!

Move slowly and take it easy.

(Mary) Anchorage, AK(Zone 4b)

I was just reading and noticed all the different states and places your wellwishers lived. What a hoot. Who can claim to have so many friends who live so widely apart. Like the biggest Kaffe Klatche in the world. Literally.

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

yes i have met some very nice people from all around the county and the world here on dg. well the hose took out a few daylilly fans that were newly planted yesterday..before the fall. one handed watering is a struggle. have not put out my hose guards yet... need to get that done soon. mrs ed..i will try the chocoate too...if i can get my daughter to take me to the store later..lol! i do have some chocolate chips for baking ..maybe i can pretend that they are little pain pills! dr offered a rx for vicodin, but i don't mess with that stuff. tylenol wine & chocolate will have to do it for me. thanks for all your well wishes everyone.

Athens, PA

Vicodin puts me to sleep - tylenol and chocolate work well for me as well. I have an excellent recipe for some cranberry nut bark that is both white and semi sweet chocolate. Let me know if you want it - perhaps you can get your daughter to whip it up - only takes about 60 seconds in the microwave....

Here's to feeling better.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

And dangle your feet in your pond!

So have you every tried Chocovine? A couple of years ago I was at a liquor store and these female associates had cracked a bottle open to sample they were ooing and aaahing and told me I had to try it. It's spectacular. Sounds like it would not be, but I highly recommend it. It's nice over ice at the end of a meal and also good drizzled on ice cream.

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

Good thing I haven't been able to get this area planted yet. Look who is calling it home tonight.Ahhh nothing like a soft bed of compost!!

Bea (or maybe Jamison),

I'm planning my pond and stream for next year. So I can compare it to yours:

What was the final size of the pond length and width?
Deepest part?
How long is the stream?
Do you know what the final gallons were?
Plant shelf width and depth?

Thanks

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

I will answer what I can.

What was the final size of the pond length and width? : 12' wide by 20' length.
Deepest part? 3ft
How long is the stream? 25ft
Do you know what the final gallons were? 2100?? Jamison??

Thanks so much for sharing your lovely pictures of the pond building.

Clermont, FL(Zone 9a)

BeaHive,
Your pond is lovely but wouldn't want to deal with those large boulders here in Fl. as the cost to ship in would be prohibitive. My first pond has Tenn. field stone around it and down the sides which were enough for me to handle. I was fortunate to buy it from a man that got rid of his pond for $400. I am now starting a second pond and little brook between a smaller pond. I am 74 so have slowed down a bit but I have a small Kubota with a bucket which is definitely my best friend. I've dug the ditches for electrical and plumbing which my husb. does (aren't shovels great) so I do a little ea. day as the heat here now is oppressive. My question for you is what kind of koi is your favorite blue one? I think it is just beautiful. I have 1 gold, 1 silver and 1 black & orange that were my first ones so now they are over a foot long. The others are not butterfly and black and orange and assorted gold fish which I want to remove to second pond oh plus a fat oranda my son added. They have made it through 2 very cold winters for Florida that is. My pond is 22" deep I just kept digging and thats what it ended up.Next pond will only be 18" deep with a little brook and then into another smaller pond which will accomodate skimmer with pump down inside. I bought a tiered concrete fountain from a friend for $25. which I am going to antique and it will set it upper pond and overflow. Finally my husb. has been bit by the ponding bug so he wants to do that part so I said go for it as long as it looks the way I want it to thats fine. I wa nt to keep the first pond for just koi. If you can put a name on that blue koi I will contact fish farms around me and see if I can find one. Happy ponding, Bonnie

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

I have no idea about my blue koi except that they are beautiful. They were lighter blue , almost translucent when I first got them 4 years ago and I felt they were kinda ugly. They turned from ugly ducklings to beautiful swans. Sound like you and your husband will be busy for a long while creating all your lovely ponds. Feel free to print the picture of the koi to show your local fish farms..maybe they can Identify it for you.

Ocoee (W. Orlando), FL(Zone 9b)

BonnieG,
Most blue koi are either shushui or asagi. The one's above look more like shusui (meaning blue with larger scales of dark running down the spine) Both types can have some red.
If you're patient, and not in a rush for any, I will continue to watch my fry and see if there are a few blue in the mix. You are welcome to one or 2 of them, and you're certainly close enough that I won't have to ship them.
:)

Clermont, FL(Zone 9a)

Merry,
I'm about 15 mins. from you. I would be overjoyed to buy one from you.
BTW Hope you are planning to attend my plant roundup Oct. 22. Please do come if you can. I've only been to one but boy did I enjoy it. I drove 118 miles but it was well worth it.
See you later. Bonnie

Clermont, FL(Zone 9a)

BeaHive,
I usually can get the pond dug in a day and lilner 45M EPDM put in. Husb. put in all the elec. today.
Got rain on and off today due to outer bands of hurricane Irene. Happy to get the rain cause it makes my plants happy and I don't have to turn on my irrigation system which I also put in myself. I research a subject and then go for it. Front yard is 350 feet and has 84 sprinkler heads and 8 large rotors. Only problem I had with first pond was sand caving in while digging. This time I'll line it and hold lilner in place with cement blocks until I can add water. My PC is printing very slow so thats all for now. Bonnie

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

Bonnie you sound like an awesome lady! I am 20 years younger than you and would not have the strength to dig all the trenches necessry for an irragattion system..lord knows I need one now with this wonderful new yard. Taking out 8 oak trees ate the budget for that!! For now I will lug the hoses around and hand water. Thank God we have a long rainy season here in the PNW. Stay safe with the hurricane. Hoping all our friends on the EC will be safe!!

Ocoee (W. Orlando), FL(Zone 9b)

Bonnie....If any of them end up even slightly blueish, I will GIVE them to you, not sell them to you! Just remember, they are small, only 3-4 inches at this point. I usually keep a handful of fry from my spawn, and then hand out the rest to fellow ponders.

PERTH, Australia

How about an update, BeaHive? What's happening?

(Mary) Anchorage, AK(Zone 4b)

that's what I was wondering. Realizing that she was severely slowed down by her accident.

PERTH, Australia

Accident?

(Mary) Anchorage, AK(Zone 4b)

Oh. Bernadette was trying to tromp on some large cardboard boxes....Well, here it is 'in her own words'

"It ook a fall today crushing boxes for recycle. it was a large box that I recieved two crape myrtle tree's in and it was giving me a hard time. i jumped on it a few times and it would not crush...but one last try finally crushed it to my surpise down i went with it. just came back from the ER and thank goodness no broken bones. i do have contusions on my forearm and elbow and lots of pain when i move this arm. no digging for awhile. just hope i can do some one arm watering tomorrow to keep thing alive until i heal. one handed typing is not so fun either. will try to heal quickly and keep this project going. i am so bummed about this. "

Happened some time in August.

PERTH, Australia

Oh I do remember that. Glad it's not something additional to that event.

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

Hi all.. yep Jamison & crew finshed aug 11 and I fell the morning of Aug 12 and messed up my arm. It has taken a while for it to heal but I am very happy to report I am at about 95% today. The first few weeks I could not do much at all. My daughter even had to brush my hair back for me everyday. ( I wear pony tails most days!!) After that I became a pro at 1 armed gardening. It took me a long time to dig holes, but I finally got all my plants in the ground that I brought with me from my last house. That was a sight to see when i was doing the larger containers. LOL! Anyway feeling better now that most of the front & back yard are planted. Waiting for some late bulb orders to arrive and then to be planted. (rainy season has started). The pond was netted last week after our first storm. OMG. There are many oak trees on this property and at my neighbors. The pond looks kind of depressing with the netting, so I think pictures will wait until spring.
Here is a pic of the front yard progress. Plants are small and mostly trimmed back for the winter, but try to imagine digging all the holes one handed and wrestling plants out of their pots. I am sure if any neighbors were watching this, they had a good laugh. I did! :)

I can already see how beautiful your yard will be. You are one determined lady -- one armed no less! Glad you are on the mend.

PERTH, Australia

BeaHive, you poor thing. I'm glad you're on the mend. Your front yard already looks lovely and I look forward to seeing updates as things grow.

Clermont, FL(Zone 9a)

Bea,
If your neighbors were watching you they should have been over at your place helping you plant. I'm a firm believer in helping others especially when physically inhibited. Hope you heal up completely soon.
Bonnie

(Mary) Anchorage, AK(Zone 4b)

I agree, even if you are a new neighbor. You are obviously bring jup the value the entire neighborhood. Plus, it's fun! :)

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

Thanks all. The neighbors are very happy that I moved here and have been giving some love to this property. It was vacant for several years and a mess. Wait till they see all the flowers next year. They will be even happier.

(Mary) Anchorage, AK(Zone 4b)

My heavens. The contrast will shock them. May also inspire them....

Cocoa Beach, FL(Zone 10a)

i love that HGTV The block show where they spend $20, 000 fixing up one house on the block with two other $1000 updates. It really does give the entire neighborhood a face lift. I have a friend in Fl that plants medians and cul de sacs undercover of darkness. He has done an amazing job transforming some eyesores. He inspired me to plant annuals around some signs and fireplug decorating a vacant lot and dog walk area. It amazed me to encounter a gentleman who told me he'd water after we left to keep them going as long as possible. He could barely walk himself, let alone his dog.

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

wonderful pond story.. nothng assures success like a good foundation ..and you've built alot of it into the pond and surrounds.. a true art meets technology... in nature story..... good work the vision... the expertice... the labor ...all coming together ...
I know.. if you have to ask... I saw size and volume discussed... was there a price that it seemed to have run.. total landscaping and pond..
with 50 acres and a bobcat... I'd never have a minute of free time to work.. maybe somewhere ..someday..
beautiful blue koi... did you give it a name... will you set up a breedng situation for them there..

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

Hi Everyone...just a new picture of the back yard & pond. It is really coming to life now. All the Koi survived the winter and were enjoying our warmer weather. Mothers day the fish would not come out of their castle for feeding. Today they emerged but one is missing. There is no visable disturbance in the pond area...so I think one may have been gobbled up by a heron or perhaps a hawk as there are many in the area. Darn! I am hoping it is hiding still.
