In the course of the very long "Navigation tweak coming," I claimed that I never used the navigation list in question. But today I wanted to send a D-mail and found that I could find no other way to do it than using that list. I rarely use d-mail, so I could easily have just forgotten about the need to use that list. But many others claimed never to use it either. Are there other ways to get there?
Note - it does seem very strange that "mail" listed across the top in the blue border under "Communities" (and maybe under "my tools???" Can't go look without losing this post...
Anyway, it does seem very strange that "mail" in the blue border at the top takes you only to a list of existing messages, and not to a place where you can do anything you want with mail.
TIA

What are the ways to send a D-mail?
You don't have a "Communities" navigation box showing? If not, you can turn it on by going to "My Preferences" and then to "Customize Home Page."
I never use the communities box either. I get to D-mail from "mail" on the second blue line at the top. If you want to send a new D-mail just select compose mail from the action box on the left.
Sorry - I should have said "My Tools" navigation box.
when i want to send a d-mail, i just click on the person's name. it will say something like "send this person a d-mail". click on that link, compose and send.
Thanks, Trackinsand, this is an elegant approach.
i don't know about elegant but it is the easiest way i know! lol
you're welcome.
Oh, DUH!! You just think you're so smart, don't you? LOL!!!
neener, neener, neener........roflol
HEHEHEHEHEHE!!
That's how I have always done it, click on a name and send a d-mail.
By the way, if you want to look at another page without leaving the current page your on, hover your mouse over the link you want and right click it. Select either Open Link in New Tab (for Firefox browser) or Open Link in New Window, or what ever your browser says. That way you can have multiple pages open and once.
That is an alternate way to send a message to a single recipient without using the navigation box.. If you want to send a "blast" to a group, I'm pretty sure you have to use the navigation box in order to compose it and select the group you wish to send it to. (You also must create the group before you can begin :-)

In all my years here on DG, I've never ONCE used that Navigation box. LOL If I want to send a d-mail, I do one of four things:
1. Click on the name of the person I want to send a d-mail to. .
2. Click on "Mail" in the purple navigation bar at the top, then "Compose new message" on the left.
3. Click on "My Info" in the purple navigation bar, and then on the d-mail link.
4. Click on "My Tools" tab at the top, and scroll down to d-mail in that list (though I think I've only used this method once.)
Lots of options for sending d-mail, without using the Navigation box. In fact, I don't even SEE d-mail in that box at all unless I'm already in the "My Tools" tab. It isn't there when I'm in the forums, which is when I would generally use it.

(editing to add: One more method, I go to my home page, and I have a link to d-mail in the custom box, right at the top of my right column.)

Angie, the purple box you're referring to, which has "compose mail" link is the navigation box I was referring to.
I know you're talking about the one on the forums page, but we do all use some of the nav boxes - a lot of times without thinking about what they are.
Sorry, guess I misunderstood. I thought we were talking about the box in the upper left corner, which has "Communities" at the top line while I'm in a forum. I do use the custom navigation box on my home page all the time. I was so impressed that we could customize what was in that box, and put our "high priority" items where we could find them quickly! And I use the tabs and navigation bar at the top of the page a lot, too. I find DG really easy to navigate. It's just the boxes on the left of the page on the forums that I find distracting and unnecessary. I don't like how they put the main text of the page off center, and leave a strip of white space on the left. But in the grand scheme of things, it is a pretty minor annoyance. Nothing to get worked up over. :)
The navigation boxes change depending on which area of the site you are on. The nav box that appears to the left of the forums now (and was most often to the right for most of us up to now) is the one that has drawn the most comments and criticisms since it was moved. And it is the one that the tech team is looking at changing, based on the feedback here :-)
But on other pages - such as your dmail page - we really do need a nav box; otherwise it would be impossible to compose a message from there. (If we removed it, the only option to send a mail would be to go to the recipient's member page and click on the link to send them a message, and that would still leave us without a way to manage our inbox or any other folders we've set up.)
