for the past week have stood on my porch and saw rain to the west...rain to the east...my little plot high and dry. we have hit between 103-106 here at the house for days on end. my plants in front of my porch still look ok...they don't get as much sun as the other stuff that is out on my fence...most of it is in full boiling sun most of the day. even the stuff that usually thrives in the heat has just about given up out there. I have been cutting back stuff as much as possible...while out watering today trying to decide what I need to just chalk up as being past redemption.
Did you get any rain today? Share effects of drought...
Rain to the west of us ... passed us by, sigh.
You got as much as we have had total in 10 months LOL I would be happy for that at this point. It looks like they have taken the hopes for any moisture out of our forecast... at least temps have been below 100 for a couple of days.. enjoying the little blessings. Freedom park is dry now. I have no idea how the ducks are doing. I am afraid to even go by to see.
jujube - we had a similar shower here in NW Austin. It built over Camp Mabry, sneezed on us, then dissipated. The larger shower that went over you split right by downtown and we just got thunder from it. :(
Ya, I will take a sneeze. It cooled things off for the rest of the afternoon at least.
I'd take cloud cover!! LOL
Unfortunately, I am seeing large dead trees in my area now in locations that have little topsoil over mostly limestone. Very sad ...I have to water one of my large crepe myrtles that is planted in very little good soil. It is struggling. Because it it located right by my back privacy fence, in order to give the whole root zone a good soak, I have to throw the water hose over the fence, enter the field, situate the sprinkler and then turn on the sprinkler. The cows and birds have fun in the water. My pomegranate tree and sweet olive trees are suffering as well.
WE have thunder and dark dark clouds to the west!!!!!! THUNDER.. can you believe it???? My dogs are barking and running around like idiots. They are never bothered by thunder but it has been so long since they have heard it I guess it is strange to them.. wind is starting to blow... It looks like we are really going to get some rain.. if this is a tease.. it is a really good one!!! I am so excited I am giddy!!! This is like a little kid at Christmas!!! I can't believe the prospect of rain can be so exciting! Trying to upload a picture but it is being stubborn.. will send if it cooperates.. took pic of the clouds. Wish us luck. It has been over 10 months since any rain....
Well, Lots of thunder.. still thundering.. but it went north! Wind did bring in cool air and the wonderful smell of rain. I think it did rain west of town and is raining in Andrews. I am very happy for them. The lightening is beautiful except I know it can be causing fires. I actually felt the crackle of one flash of lightening and smelled the ozone.... made me a little nervous... and even more excited... I LOVE WEATHER!!! The storm is a decent size so I know it is giving a lot of very happy people some very needed rain.. just not here. I am enjoing the thunder and nice cool fresh air... I am amazed at how unbelievably excited I got!
Here are the clouds before they took a sharp turn north... what a tease!
Understandable excitement for you and your doggers! Sorry you couldn't enjoy the rain but happy someone was blessed with the moisture.
Maybe next time...

LhasaLover,
Great photo! It has been sooo long since I have seen clouds like that!! I know how it must have felt when the rain passed you by. I am always thankful when at least someone receives some rain.
Thank you...I just ran outside with my phone and took the picture quickly.. the opressive humide feeling was wonderful...I am happy to feel it again any time.. bring it on! I am learning to love my smart phone.. got it last september and am using it more and more ..I first thought I would hardly use it...my boss required we have phones he could text us on... I did not do texting at the time. I got one that did everything... lost the job soon after but LOVE the phone. LOL
.... no rain today but we did have a few clouds and some remaining humidity.
Takes great photos!
Freedom Park lake has water again! The news last night said they were going to start putting water back in. About 1 million gallons of reclaimed water was going to be used to refill it by the city. They said they have never had to add water to it before since it is our run off drainage area for this part of town but there has been no run off in forever. I drove by there about 11:00 last night.. no water. On my way home at 4:00am I could see a little water in one large area so I drove into the parking lot and walked up to the edge.. the big pipe that goes out into it was spewing water! There was a large area of water spreading out and you should have seen the ducks!!!! They were all running and paddling around in the water. It was an all out celebration of ducks... so fun to watch. It was obvious that they were very happy to see the water. I am glad I stopped by to see the celebration. I stood there for about 20 minutes and the ducks settled down after about 15 and started going back to their sleeping spots along the bank.
We have to have enough rain to fill it by September 11... it is where the memorial service is done each year with over 3,000 flags placed around the perimeter of the lake... it is a beautiful sight each year.
No rain in Abilene. But the other morning while I was watering, a pair of barn swallows came to play in the water and eat the bugs the water disturbed. I love swallows, but we rarely see them in town. And to my surprise, I had a hummingbird visit the other evening. About the only perennial blooming is my flame acanthus and that's where he was feeding. As a teacher I'm loath to wish for fall, but the gardener in me can't help it. Keep playing for rain.
It rained about 1/4" last night in Yukon, Ok. My garden situation is so sad. In May I had some landscaping done in my front yard and had several new shrubs put in and I know I have lost 2 Sky Pencil Holly and at least 1, if not 2, Japanese Yew and 2 Hydrangeas. I am so upset. We can water on even, odd days depending on your address. My Hosta are even struggling and they usually look great. I don't know if I can save the Yew, I keep pouring on the water as often as I can!
we got a pretty good rain early this morning can't say for sure how much but here it is late afternoon and the ground is still wet
Officially 10 months here without rain.. at least at my house and in town. There was a little rain west of town a few days ago. I am happy for anyone who even gets a drop... and I must admit.. I did get about 5 drops.. I enjoyed the smell very much. I keep watching the weather and that swirling high pressure over Texas.. it is so hard to watch the rain go all around the state. I know the weather patterns will change... the sooner the better for all.
They are keeping water in the little lake and I enjoy seeing it every time I drive by... yea for the City of Odessa for doing this for us.
Woke up to a three minute rain shower this morning. Too little to measure, sure wish we would have a good hard rain.....106 daytime temp and woke up to 86 this morning.
It looked like rain here this morning but not a blessed drop, we sure need it.
It may still be no rain but it is more frequently looking like it MAY rain which is an improvement. We went months without a cloud in the sky and we now have white fluffy clouds more often and occasionally I can say it has even been a little cloudy! If it keeps up, it may eventually rain. Unfortunately, it is still HOT.
We had rain here in Se Oklahoma yesterday and again this morning didn't ever rain very hard but it rained for over 5 hours Looks like there is a weather system in the gulf heading in the direction of Houston
Hoping it's a big push!
I thought at the beginning of the year, 'they' predicted it would be a bad year for hurricanes. Am I wrong, or was that the system farther to the north that caused all the tornados? I'm not complaining, it just seems a quiet year for hurricanes and more of them in the pacific then usual.
Isn't there an old saying "It takes a flood to break a drought"? Not sure if I should put a smiley face after that or not??
Carla
cocoa_lulu, ROTFL! How can any tropical storm resist such a cordial invite?
I have the welcome mat out for tropical storm Don! Welcome to any part of Texas but most welcome all the way to my part of West Texas! Sorry to have to ask the pass through along the coast..
I am making up a guest bed for you Don. No inflatable mattress in the living room for you. I will even break out our nice quilts.
Isn't it sad that we're waiting for some kind of tropical weather to bring us rain? While I hate the destruction that comes with this type of weather, at this time of year, it's pretty much our only hope for relief.
Lynnea, LOVED your welcome!!
Oh Donny Boy...oh Donny Boy... the welcome mats are waiting....from Big Ben onto the Piney Woods.....
You're so rain. You probably think this Typhoon is about you. You're so rain, SO RAIN!!
I BET YOU THINK THIS TYPHOON IS ABOUT YOU. DONT YOU. DONT YOU!!!
Now I am singing songs for Don.
Next???
We'll leave the light on for you....
LOL LOL LOL
LOL! I'll make the pot of coffee for the morning after celebration!
Woohoo!!....Hey Don!!!!!....Coco made you a cake.....come and get it!!!!!!!
