OK, HERE IT IS.. new link.. we are either fixing or repairing daily or howling!
So what is your status
THE GARAGE CAFE 2011 - SPRINGING TO THE DOG DAYS OF SUMMER
Howling? ^_^
Thank you! Thank You! Thank You!
I've added a new hibiscus to my garden. Summer Storm!
It is so pretty with its dark, blackish/purple Maple looking leaves. The blooms are deep pink to rose colored with a deep red throat. I found a picture on the internet of it as mine is not in bloom. YET!
Plus I got a large Rosemay plant and some Basil. I love fresh rosemary and basil.
Looks like my container garden! LOL I also found that a cheap wading pool makes a good container. Just punch holes in the bottom and fill with planter mix and plant.
Yes, they do.
I love the pool idea - how to keep the munching marauders out is another matter!!!!
What I'm doing is building a frame of wood with heavy wire over it and setting the pool on top of it. I have a back injury so can't get down on the ground to garden for my veggies. Each frame I am building will hold 2 small pools. I get the pools for $7.00 each and than drill holes in the bottom, add planter mix and compost and that wet them and plant my veggies.
marti - would love to see a photo of the setup - with or without plants already bursting forth.
I'll have to see about getting one soon.
AaaaahwhoooooOOOOooooOOooo!
A howl, I assume? ^_^
Is there a full moon?!
Very pretty water lily there Jan. Ihad a white bloom yesterday.
GOOD NEWS/BAD NEWS?? Depends on your point of view.
When I go to Calif July 23 I will be not be coming back to Kentucky. I'm going out to help raise my grandson and take over from darn sitters who either hurt him or egnore him. Parents want to get him into preschool and so I will be dropping him off at preschool and pick him up after and watch him tell mom or dad get home from work.
BUT I have to give up my garden here. I will be living with my son and DIL in a mobilehome park with no place to garden. So I will have about a 4 foot by 10 foot area that I will be able to garden in containers. I hope I can find a community garden where I can take my grandson and teach him about growing things.
That's big news, marti. Where in CA?
I'm happy for your grandson, that's for sure.
You will find a way to garden in containers or elsewhere. I have faith in you. ^_^
I found a community garden not far from my son's place> It costs $75.00 for 6 months with a $50.00 refundable deposit. The $75. encluds water, mulch and tools. Sounds great. I will check into it as soon as I get to Ventura, Calif. I'll be living not far from the beach and about 45 minutes from the mts. Not as green and friendly as KY, but at least I get to spend time with my grandson.
It's a nice area ... without all the humidity of KY.
That's one thing in it's favor!! I'm still coming thru Clarksville to drop off the daffs for you. Anything else?
That's good of you, marti, but if it's out of your way, don't worry about it. I don't know what else ... whatcha got?? ^_^
Marti
as a recent addition to FL by way of 18 years in beautiful KY, yes you will miss it but when you get out there you will love the ocean, provided you like water (and not the lake variety of water, lol). Yes it won't be as green as our beloved KY, but it will have other opportunities, which you and your grandson will benefit from. He is a very lucky youngester to have his granny coming just to take care of him.
I gave up my garden and I'm living through the pictures that others are so kind to share here at DG, so until you get settled and started back just enjoy what others have here.
Wishing you the best and hopefully not to much homesickness for ya, besides that grandson will keep you so busy you won't have time to be homesick.
Take plenty of pics of your journey out there and check in with us when you can.
Jan
(marry to a KY boy)
Thanks Jan. I am a born and raised Calif girl who moved to KY August 2009 to help out my sister who moved here in 1999. Now I'm going back to help out my son and grandson.
I have the camera in the car already and will take pictures on the way out. There's a few places I want to stop and visit on the way.
I'm trying to sort and pack and also work in the garden to get it ready to make it easy for my sister and neice to care for and it keeps raining off and on. Darn!!
Only 15 more days til I pull out for Calif. July 23. I have appointments Monday the 11 to get the oil change done on my jeep and on 13 for a check up and spark plus change. Than on the 18th my computer goes to the computer geek for a clean up and check and than it gets packed for the trip. I can get on my sisters computer for the last few days, but after the 22 I will be off line for the drive to Calif. Once there and a few days to settle in I'll check back with everyone and see how your all doing.
marti001 if you can afford it get wireless then all of us can travel with you as you start a new thread about your travels.
Were all do you plan to stop and visit... what route are you taking, southern or northern???? If you are afraid (like me) don't go to pikes peek..... that is a story that could be its own thread....LoL
Jan
I don't have a laptop. So will have to wait until I get to Calf to check in with everyone. I will be taking pictures of my trip. I will be traveling out HWY 40. Will stop in Clarksville, TN to visit Cville_Gardener and Jonesboro, ARK to visit ButterflyChaser.
ok, didn't read the message right.... sorry about that.
I hope your trip goes well, and that you enjoy your visits along the way.
Jan
I'm looking forward to your visit. ^_^
Well, trying to get stuff sorted. I need to be really critical about what I'm keeping and taking with me and what can be thrown away. 13 more days to go and I'm on the road.
I'm making a list of the plants I want to take with me. I can't fit them all in pots in the Jeep with the rest of My stuff, so have decided to take them out of the pots put the roots in plastic bags and set them in something in the Jeep, so that I can check them and water if necessary. Plus I can keep them out of sight for crossing the Calif border. Found out that I will be living in Zone 8.

marti.. do you any seeds taht wouldbe suitable to put to our prairie?
I am an open door for laitris coneflowers gaillardias, daisys, phlox and the like so if anyone is deadheadnig andneeds a place to go with them.. let me know.
I dont need the seed shelled from any heads and the heads can be boxed with partial stems and sent.. I suggest paper bagging them so the do not turn to compost...but I am after quanity
These are purple clover, (ithink!0 Thats just one more growing here. I dont need any more clovers...
I'll check and see what I have and let you know.
I don't know what to do. My sister is really pulling someon me now that I am getting ready to leave. She tells her doctor that she will be alright without me, but she hasn't got off her butt for the last couple of days. She has hoarded stuff in this house that she brought with her in 1999 when she moved from Calif to KY. Material and craft stuff that set in a storage shed on the property all these years. She has had us wash it all and she says she's going to start sewing again, but hasn't done anything. When I went to western KY for 14 days she said she was going to sort all the material stacked in the livingroom chairs and decided what to keep and what to get rid of. She did nothing!! I'm sure that she will get worse in her attitude as the day gets closer for me to leave. Her Doctor told her that he was concerned about my leaving and that if I had not been with her for the last 2 years she would either be in a nursing home or dead. I do feel some quilt but my grandson and son need me. I'm worried about leaving my 3 cats here, but can't take them into my son and DIL trailer and lock them up in one room.
marti
so sorry to hear how your sister is dealing with your upcoming departure. I do feel you need to go where you can do the most good.
Oh to have to leave your cats, now that is hard. When we were coming here I had to find a home for one of my collies, and thankfully, I found him a home with a friend who had another one of my collie pups from a previous litter. Saint loves his new home as he gets to live inside and on of their cats is crazy about him and sleeps with him all the time. The two love each other....
Jan
2 of my cats were raised indoors. Ginger the older one did get out a little when I llived on a ranch in Bakersfield. Shorty has always been indoors due to his seizures since I got him at 4 weeks old. Since moving to KY, I gave up and allowed them outside. Than last summer I adopted a kitten that wondered in off the street. My cats love lying outside in the grass or on the front porch out of the rain. Shorty has only had 2 seizures since he's been here in KY. I j ust can't take them back to Calif and lock them up again. They will be happy here running in and out of the house.
Ok, To any one who is interested!! I have 4 elderberry bushes, young ones, I need to find them a home. Once I leave here no one will be interested in doing anything with the berries, so I think it's best if I remove them and that will make the yard easier to mow.
So let me know!!
Marti --
I would be interested if no one else is. But if someone else wants them, please give them to that person. I have daffodils coming. ^_^
You got them!! I'll bring them with me when I head your way. Thank you for giving them a good home.
Well,5 more days and I hit the road for Calif. My son and his wife have been getting my room ready for me with the help of my 4 yr old grandson.
Well, gang!! When I shut down my computer tonight I won't be back on til I get to Calif. I've had to delay my leaving by one day so will leave first thing Sunday morning. Am trying to pack my Jeep Cherekee right now. The heat and humity are just playing hard with me. I carry stuf out to the jeep than come in and sit infront of the fans for awhile and than start all over again. The plants for Cville_Gardener and Butterfly Chaser will go in at the last minute.
marti -- If you are able to leave a bit earlier and can arrive here in the morning sometime rather than the afternoon, it might be better for you. It's supposed to be our hottest day yet tomorrow with the temp at 103º. And that's NOT with the heat index. :(
We could do a late breakfast rather than a late lunch. It will be cooler at that time, that's for sure.
LMK.
