Pandurata 2011

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

OM Goodness, Jackie! LOVE IT!!!! ♥ What a show you've got with those Pandies!

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Thanks Helena and Becky. If it keeps up this pace, my blooms wont last into Aug like they usually do.

Mesilla Park, NM

Jackie, I just had to tell you that the two seedling I got from your seeds are doing very well despite this heat. They are the only ones of my species doing great in full sun for being so little. I hope they make it through the summer.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

I think I need to move mine outside. Mine is doing great, but not that big. Nice and green though, just needs probably more room and more sunshine!

A - You should share a few photos of your new studio and the garden and patio areas! It looks awesome what you have done! I love your raised beds! That's what I want around my yard! :-) :-) Some day ...

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

A, Being small won't hurt them. Mine was very small too the first yr that I planted it. That was its yr
to creep and creep it did. I'm sure yours will make it thru the summer. Mark its spot well brcause it will die down
at the 1st sign of cooler weather.
A if they wilt and don't perk back up by sundown, you can water them some. Temps over 100 here every day
and I'm having to water every few days

Hi patootie,

Are these the same at the ones you grow? If so, great, then I know the name of these. The other colors are just now blooming, but these have been blooming for a while.

Thanks,
Suny

Hi Suny, I think you have a pandurata there, a species mg. Can you send a pic of the lvs for more
positive id? Even the lacy looking vine below is the same as the one that comes up in my pandy. Its
very aggressive, spreading by runners.

Suny - Welcome! Beautiful blooms and great photo!

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Can't remember if I sent this pic. Pretty with the youjiro showing.

Pandy was still making over 25 blooms a day here.

By the middle of Aug, pandy was making just one bloom a day. This was taken Aug 15.
A long wait till next yr. :-(

Last yr pandy made over 100 sds, wont be as many this yr but I've already gathered over 50
and still gathering. If anyone wants to try this species, just dmail me with pandy as the subject.

Mesilla Park, NM

Oh my lord, I want mine to do that... how long does a seedling take to bloom (If I can keep it alive that long)

Wow.. you must be very happy to see those flowers everyday. Even if they stop blooming you have had quite a show.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

A, it took 2 yrs for my first bloom. Blue got hers to bloom in 1 yr I think because she started hers early in the house
over winter prior to planting outside.
Its worth the wait A, you will love this one.

Mesilla Park, NM

I'm getting ansy, I went out front with a flash light a little bit ago and checked on them.. It is a beautiful night out and all the stars are out, very clear sky.

I want my pandy to bloom.. you think it may bloom in 2012?

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

A, if you just started it recently, it might not bloom til 2013. It is a true perennial, sleeps the 1st yr it's planted,
creeps the 2nd season and leaps the 3rd. I planted mine in 06 and it slept making only 3 or 4 lvs.that yr. The
next yr it made 12 lvs. By the time I noticed it was up in 08, it was almost to the top of my fence.
So while my vine was 2 yrs old when it bloomed, it was in its 3rd season of growth.

Mesilla Park, NM

Yes, I noticed it is a slow grower. I have lots of patience, I just hope it doesn't die on me before it blooms.

Jackie - Do you fertilize it with anything to get it going strong? The two seeds that sprouted from Debra's sleeping seeds are barely making true leaves. Both seem pretty healthy and I will be moving them into a much larger container. They make tubers, right?

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Becky, I didn;t feed it because look how it grows already, 50 blooms a day when it hits full stride and it's still just a baby, 3 yrs old. It does make tubers. I tried to dig up a smaller vine, an offshoot, for a friend and I didn;t get deep enough. I hit a section where
the root was thickened so even the offshoots/runners make tubers.
Becky being a true perennial, it will sleep the first yr not much you can do to make it act like an annual
and grow faster. You can trick the
pandy when you start it late winter, it won't bloom that next summer but can the following summer. Then its
only 1 and 1/2 yrs old not two yrs old.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Jackie - I can't believe that yours gets enough nutrients from the ground without you fertilizing it! What kind of dirt is it? Do you compost there along the fence where the tubers are? I hear ya about the time it takes to get a plant attaining it's growth habits in full force!

Mesilla Park, NM

Jackie, do you know if the cuttings will root in water? I'd like to try that one day, maybe next year it will be long enough to take a cutting.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Becky, I think its sorry dirt but maybe not as bad as I'm thinking since the pandy does so well there. Earthworms keep the dirt loose and theres always fallen leaves. The fallen lvs acting as compost I suppose.
Someone had warned me not to feed it and so far they've been right. It does just fine without any food

A, I've not had any luck trying to root it in water, I root our reg mg's all the time in water, nothing to it but pandy has proved to be a little more difficult for me.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Jackie - That is one amazing vine! I can't believe you don't fertilize it for it to look that good! It is absolutely a beautiful blooming vine! I really love it! Being a wild MG is probably why it doesn't need fertilizer to do well. It's probably evolved to get the nutrients from the soil.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Becky, It does fine on it's own so it is getting plenty of nutrients from the soil.
Hard to argue with all those beautiful blooms, :-)
Oops, I said it was 3 but it's actually 5, planted in 2006. I hope it will be around a lot longer.
