Plant & Tree Identification Forum

Beautiful, BC(Zone 8b)

The "Tree" part is very redundant as a tree is a plant. Might as well call it the Plant, Tree, Vine, Shrub, Perennial, Annual, Biennial, Bulb, Vegetable, Herb, Aquatic Plant, Palm, etc Forum. Keep it simple.

i agree although so many people who ask for an id on their "plant" will often ask, "weed or plant?" as if a weed isn't a plant. i could understand these same people not realizing that a tree is also a plant. perhaps it should be "Identification" forum and don't even include the word plant.

The only thing with that is "bug ID", "bird ID", "plant ID", etc....

ah yes, always a glitch somewhere.......sigh.

When we started it was called just an ID forum. And then we split off insects and birds. I'd have to dig back through the posts and the recesses of my mind, but I'm pretty sure there was a reason we called it "plants and trees." But that doesn't mean we couldn't shorten it now if the majority think it should be just "plant ID" :-)

Thanks Terry. Anyone else wish to chime in?

Any defenders of the trees? (*smile*)

I'm not necessarily defending it, but I think the name might be the way it is because there are people who use "plant" to refer to annuals/perennials/etc (non-woody stuff) so they would see a tree as being something else. But if you're going to use that argument, then it ought to be plants, trees & weeds ID forum because I can't count the number of people who start off their ID request "is this a plant or a weed"! I think if it's just called Plant ID people should be able to figure it out.

Concur; It has always bothered me that the use weed vs plant is so prevalent. Your precious flower may be my obnoxious weed. The morning glory as an example is a very noxious weed in a cultivated field, but loved by flower gardeners. The converse is also true, weed just means a plant that is undesirable to some one at some time. Plant ID should be sufficient and in keeping with the other ID forums.

I agree! Plant ID, short, sweet and to the point!
