This is one of my new tropical water lilies. I haven't had tropical ones before just couldn't resist. Will have to figure out how to overwinter them.
What's Happening in your Garden Today June 2011
Holly---
I got my "Plume Flower" at Rawlings as well--just longer ago that you got yours...
It is really NOT and attractive plant---tends to be woody and the leaves tend to yellow out.
And then--It blooms......:o)
You may, or may not, remember that last summer this plant got blown over in a storm
and ALL the branches broke off just above the soil.
I did not give up on it--and it did re-grow. Now it is blooming....
I do not venture out much in these temps! At this time--it is 1005* here.
The "heat index" (??) is 118*.
I go outside for 5 minutes and I cannot catch my breath. I drip in no time at all.
I have tried watering the most important plants--like my Brugs--but I have to let it be.
Ran the sprinkler this AM on my Tomato bed....that's all...
How are you doing at Lowes? Are you PT or FT?
My hours are seriously cut. Only 10hrs. this week. Been there--seen this--every year.
Have to ride through the lean times.....
Re your Water Lilies---Did you read JIll's article today? It is more on Lotus--but she may be
able to answer some questions for you.
You can always try the web Sites of the major Pond suppliers providers.
I have never had a pond--but the 1st 5 years I worked at HD--I "owned" the Greenhouse.
We had a functioning pond with a waterfall--the biggest attraction to kids in the store.
Because we had Goldfish in it...
I knew quite a bit about ponds back then--as I had to wait on people that were building one.
A bit rusty on all that by now--but I do remember a lot of stuff....
Made a zillion batches of Pesto today. Stripped all my basils of their leaves....
They will re-grow--then I do it all over again....
Stay cool! Gita

Crit--
This will give you an idea of what I had to look at.....

And--the solution.....

Hi, I've been lugging the hose around to keep things alive in this HEAT!!! Lots of blooms including cannas and hibiscus. We picked our first tomatoes: Better Boy and Stupice.
I've been distracted by a persistent pair of hawks that have been visiting morning AND night. They are making me reconsider NOT putting out seed in our feeders...
Just got my first tomatos, Camp Joy cherry and volunteer noid grape.
so pretty!!!
Dianna,
Pretty Cone Flowers! Mine never grow--as the few I am trying to establish are in my YUK bed.
Mine is in a 14" pot and has many. many stems. It is, by now, at least 2' high--
counting from the top of the soil.
I meant to un-pot it and clean up the root system, but never got to it.
so--now it is growing huge--again.
Mine gets some early AM sun--maybe you could move yours where it does
get a bit better light? They can take it! Makes the leaf-color more intense as well.
Because it is a big plant--I water it whenever I water my front beds.
However--Begonias can go dry and love it. Don't over-water it.
I seldom water it in the house in winter--and it still survives.
Went out and took a picture for you --just now.
Put the yard-stick in it--the highest leaf was qt 29".
Ruby!!! YooooHooo.....
Here is the pot of AW Begonia I started for you.
Growing well--and a couple more months to go to the Swap.
The darker leaves are the ones that have grown while outside. Nice!
The paler ones are from "before"....Shade? Inside?
Gita
edited to add that the red you see is NOT a bloom--not yet!
It is the underside of the leaves.

Holly that is very pretty. I think after my favorite effect , the picotee edge, my second favorite effect might be an 'eye'
wind, I have that begonia too, and noticed that my newer big leaves have lost the nice spots. Mine is in all day bright shade. Mine may not be getting enough water, as the summer got hotter. That's all I can think of that changed. It been fertilized . Last year I had it by my mailbox and it didn't have nice spots there either. That spot got late afternoon sun after all day shade.
Gita's begonia looks wonderful!
The ground is so dry. I've been watering everything and then I have to start all over again! My sunny side daylilies look awful...
Sally, You are right about the ground. I watered yesterday before I did some weeding and planting. I didn't water real hard as I didn't want a muddy mess. But I thought I gave them a pretty good drink and was really surprised when I started digging and the ground was bone dry just under the surface. The roots didn't get any of it.
Gita, your begonias look so healthy and nice. I'll try giving ours a bit more sun. I was thinking the sun could have been the culprit too so I put it in more shade. Thanks for the feedback. Sally, the leaves on ours are dying but still have the spots...good luck with yours and with watering. I just love begonias, hopefully ours will perk up. I'll try watering it less too. Like you, it has been so dry here. I've been watering our porch plants every time I walk by. Maybe it has been too much.
We actually got a 'little' bit of rain this afternoon. Yay!!!
Judy--
Would you like to move this on--if you think it is worth it--as we all have a lot of Fall cleaning up to do
and also deal with the cold nights--bringing all the plants in, raking leaves--preparing beds for next season--etc....
I hate to see this Thread go into oblivion--as it is such an "open" Thread--talk about anything.....
We ARE way over 200 posts! Whacha think? Gita
Have started a continuation thread here

Long or short, lets just all check in. Thanks, Judy
