I recently e-mailed Dave and offered to help compile a list of new gardening quotes for the daily newsletter. (Psst - if you don't get the DG newsletter, you are really missing a treat! Click on Preferences in the right-hand column, scroll to the bottom and check that box!)
I have a pretty good start on this project, with about 60-70 quotes for each season. But I know ya'll have some great one-liners, pithy expressions, and favorite stories - DG or otherwise. Please e-mail me your very favorite one(s).
Wait a minute!!!!! PLEASE don't send me hyperlinks to sites with quotes or a page of quotes you cut and pasted - I've looked at just about everything out there and I'm cross-eyed from the effort! What I really want is for everybody to submit YOUR personal favorite(s).
Sending one favorite is great, but if you just can't narrow it down that far, then send me no more than a handful (that's less than five where I come from!) These will provide us with a year of new/funny/touching/true words to start our days in 2002! (Maybe even before that if Dave has a chance to start loading them before then :)
Send me an e-mail or post them here, pretty please. ;0) (((((Big hug and thanks in advance)))))
Favorite Garden Quote, Joke or Short Story?
I will get them in far before 2002. Compiling the quotes is the hardest part (as you now know) :)
Plugging the quotes into the newsletter is easy. So let's get that list of our favorite quotes and they'll be in the newsletter as quick as a flash!

' He who plants a garden,plants Happiness'
' Leave Room In Your Garden For Angels To Dance'

' A generous amount of rain and sun makes my gardening bunches of fun'

Guess I got my limit. You did say a handful. But I have big hands.hehe Ok,I'm done. Not really, but I will quit.

How do you make a Honeymoon Salad?
Lettuce alone.
Dig a seven dollar hole for a four dollar plant.
Mighty Oaks from little acorns grow
To see a world in a grain of sand
And a Heaven in a wild flower
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand
And Eternity in an hour

From my perpetual calendar:
To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow
"More than anything, I must have flowers, always, always - Claude Monet
"The amen of Nature is always a flower" - Oliver Wendell Holmes
"Gardening is the art that uses flowers and plants as the paint, and the soil and sky as the canvas-working with nature provides the technique" - Elizabeth Murray
Happiness held is the seed; happiness shared is the flower

I have a stepping stone that says: "Grow old beside me..The best is yet to be." That's a quote from someone but I don't know who. But it's one of my favorites.
"You can bury a lot of troubles digging in the dirt."
Not gardening but was in my Church Newsletter this month
Great minds discuss ideas.
Average minds discuss events.
Small minds discuss people.

WHAT SUNSHINE IS TO FLOWERS,SMILES ARE TO HUMANITY.
A WEED IS A PLANT THAT'S NOT ONLY IN THE WRONG PLACE,
BUT INTENDS TO STAY.
GOD GIVES EVERY BIRD ITS FOOD, BUT HE DOES NOT THROW
IT IN THE NEST.
A PLANT NEEDS ROOTS TO GROW;A PERSON NEEDS TO GROW TO HAVE ROOTS.
TO BE ABLE TO LOVE A BUTTERFLY,WE MUST FIRST CARE FOR A FEW CATERPILLARS.
These are great! Keep 'em coming, and start watching for new quotes beginning with tomorrow's newsletter :)
Vols,my hands are growing bigger here. Was that 5 per finger that we can submit?
"The gardening season officially begins on January 1st and ends on December 31st - Marie Huston"
"A spell lies on the Garden. Summer sits. With her finger on her lips as if she heard the steps of Autumn echo on the hill"

To love in the midst of sweets, , little children could do that, but to love in the bitterness of wormwood is a sure sign of our affectionate fidelity. St Francis de Sales
Awake, oh North wind and come, thou South; blow upon my garden, that the spices thereof may flow out.
A garden is like the Self. It has so many layers and winding paths, real or imagined, that it can never be known completely......

Wonderful! Some of these were already among those I had collected, and some of them are news to me :)
"When gardening I have one gift, you won't find it in manuals. I know it's strange but I can change perennials into annuals." Anon.
"I'm not aging - I just need repotted" Anon.
"Tickle the earth with a hoe and it will laugh a harvest." Chinese proverb
"There are no gardening mistakes- only experiments" Janet Kilburn Phillips
" My garden will never make me famous, I'm a horticultural ignoramus: I can't tell a string bean from a soy bean, or even a girl bean from a boy bean." Ogden Nash
There are so many - it's hard to choose just five!! MWhit
A garden is like life...ever changing... ever beautiful.
A garden is a friend you can visit anytime.
May all your weeds be wildflowers.
"Bread feeds the body, indeed, but flowers feed also the soul."

To know someone here or there with whom you can
feel there is understanding in spite of distances or
thoughts expressed -- That can make life a garden.
~Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
I love them all!!!MORE,MORE!!!!
These are great!
I am busy as the proverbial beaver compiling the quotes you've submitted, plus others I've found.
One word of warning: sometimes the quotes you've provided may ultimately appear a bit differently when you see it. I'm researching every quote to make sure it's as accurate as possible, and crediting the author of the quote whenever possible.
All told, we have over 400 quotes "waiting in the wings" plus about 70 more waiting to be researched and added to the compilation. I'd like to have at least 500-600 (or more) quotes before we're done, so please keep 'em coming!
And maybe we can talk Dave into giving everyone a way to view the quotes - handy when we're wanting one for our own use ;0) It would be our own "garden of quotes" somewhere here...
Great Idea go-vols..
I have made a couple of signs for the garden with favorite quotes on them..and also painted on the base for my sundial..
Always looking for more though..
"If you have 2 loaves of bread
Sell one and buy flower's..
For although bread nourishes the body...
Flower's nourish the soul.
Unknown
Whew! Okay, I have finished double-checking this list to make sure I've got them all.
We now have 600+ quotes in a database. Each day a new quote appears in the newsletter. I hope to gradually add more quotes (they're getting harder to find, obviously) so that we will have a full two-years' worth of interesting, diverse quotes. Some of these are bad puns, some are terrible jokes and wordplays, some will make you think, and perhaps some will even brighten our day a bit. Thanks for sharing your favorites, and if you there are still any out there, feel free to share them here... I'll check back on this thread occasionally to see if any new ones have appeared.
And feedback is great: how are the daily quotes so far? You like 'em? You hate 'em? You wanna be able to read all of them? (I'm working on Dave for that one....)
LOVE THEM! Great work GO VOL!
"The best remedy for those who are afraid, lonely or unhappy is to go
outside, somewhere where they can be quiet, alone with the heavens,
nature and God. Because only then does one feel that all is as it should
be and that God wishes to see people happy, amidst the simple beauty of
nature. As long as this exists, and it certainly always will, I know
that then there will always be comfort for every sorrow, whatever the
circumstances may be. And I firmly believe that nature brings solace in
all troubles."
~Anne Frank, from The Diary of a Young Girl, entry for Feb. 23, 1944~
A Passing Glimpse:
I often see flowers from a passing car
That are gone before I can tell what they are.
I want to getout of the train and go back
To see what they were beside the track.
I name all the flowersI am sure they weren't:
Not fireweed loving where woods have burnt___
Not bluebells gracing a tunnel mouth___
Not lupine living on sand and drouth.
Was something brushed across my mind
That no one on earth will ever find?
Heaven gives us glimpses only to those
Not in position to look too close.
By Robert Frost
Gardeners know the best dirt!
'Tickle it with a hoe,and it will laugh into a harvest'
I have no idea where I got the following. I have seen it at a craft show or on something in a store, but I wrote it down sometime ago.You may already have this one,I don't know.I always have paper and pen in my purse just for things like this. When I see something that I like, I write it down.
'May today there be peace within you.
May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be.
I believe that friends are quiet angels who lift us to our feet....
when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly.'

Here is one that came in one of my newsletters.
"A garden without its statue is like a sentence without its verb."______Author Joseph W. Beach
I've just seen the Fun Gardening Quotes page and they are great. The 'I Eat My Peas With Honey' quote is from the comedian 'Spike Milligan' who has written some excellent childrens poems (its from one of them).
Baa, thank you! I searched high and low for a source to attribute that poem to, and couldn't find it. I'll track down Mr. Milligan and see what I can find.
And I'm glad you like the quotes; I had a lot of fun putting them together. I think we probably have one of the largest compilation of gardening/nature quotes with credit given to the author whenever possible.
Your Welcome Vols
I'm not sure how well known they are in the USA but Spike Milligan was one of the Goons, one of the pioneers of alternative comedy (not sure what they mean by altenative because I found them funny)
Even those who dislike his work tend to like his childrens stuff. I've read many of his books and he never fails to keep my interest.
I believe that every human being should
be remembered by someone. Memory helps
to anchor us to each other; it locates us
within a certain time, community and family.
