Let's See New Lilies Sprouting #3

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Great looking combinations!

Duluth, GA(Zone 7b)

Thanks, they weren't planned. I tend to randomly plant things, and they just happen to match, LOL. Annette

Yes, Moby, like the peonies, the lilies are late this year. But the plants look really healthy, and it should be spectacular. Your lilies certainly are!

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Quite the vista there, Moby!

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Thanks, but sadly it won't be as lovely as it could. Rabbits have decimated entire clumps of lilies. They're absolutely horrid this year. DH found one in the garden that must have been torn up by a cat, so we left it out there for a couple days. Haven't seen another since. >:)

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Thats the same method to keep crows out of corn fields.
I cant imagine how disapointing it must be to see all plants eaten.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Want to rent a cat? I have 4 now and haven't seen a rabbit all year. This is Simon the Stray.

Beautiful cat, and he looks like he's on guard duty.

Sorry to hear, Moby. I've had that problem in the past. This year not, but I see rabbits all around. What you have left is gorgeous, though!

Duluth, GA(Zone 7b)

I use Repell All, and blood meal to scare the rabbits from my garden. They did get a few lilies but not as many as they did last year. I finally got to see some of my lilies bloom this year that had been decimated in the past. When I last put it down a few weeks ago I found rabbit babies under my coreopsis, and they ran away squealing like crazy, I didn't know rabbits made noises. I haven't seen them since. I usually use it once per month.

I've heard from several people that the rabbits are especially bad this year. Granular Plantskydd was applied first, then Repels All ~ twice! They're utterly immune. Thanks for all the kind words, though.

Pretty bloom, Cem.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Moby, I used Plantskydd granular last December when I saw vole trails to the lilies. Guess it was too late by then.I also spray with Repells all but didnt apply before the snow.
I am still figuring out a foolproof routine for winter protection.

We provide a nice winter home for voles by mulching the beds with town mulch. That ends this year.

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

If you plant miniature daffodils around your lilies you will not have the problem. I discovered this a couple of years back, and no longer have to spray them with anything after losing bulbs for years. I suggest miniatures because they are unobtrusive. And you only have to plant them once, since they remain for years. They are poisonous to rabbits and voles, and they don't even dig. I suggest WP Milner, a miniature trumpet, because it is very small, very cute, available from several sources, and quite inexpensive.

I lost no lilies this year, last year, or the year before - ever since I put them in.

Sounds like an excellent idea to me. Now you'll just have to remind me come fall. ;)

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

LOL!

Well, if you order them now....

I wonder how much it would cost for a 'bazillon"...

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

I read someplace about the daffodils also, and have tried it the last two years, and have had no mole/ vole damage at all where the daffs were planted around the lilies. I used the full size daffs and put them about a foot apart.

Plus it's pretty. And they hardly ever die, so it's a one time investment.

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

Way to go Polly! Do spread the word. I've written about it several times, but people don't seem to know about it. I love it because it helps keep lily vendors going. Rather than stop buying altogether, maybe people will feel comfy enlarging their collections. It had that effect on me.

Naughty Moby, you don't need a billion. I put them, spaced as Polly does. So 12 daffs covers 12 feet.

And B&B has 2 early order discounts, 6% if you order by July1, 10% if you pay by July 1.

Be a good girl, Mar!

Never! >:)

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Me too, Donna. I purchased quite a few last year, and now I want more. It was probably your posts where I first read about the daffs.

Duluth, GA(Zone 7b)

Van Englen also has inexpensive minature daffs. I ordered tons of bulbs from them last year the quality of bulbs received was wonderful. I just need to get the minatures this year. Also, I prefer the granular Repell All. Moby, sorry you're having such a tough time with the rabbits.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

I used every granular repellant possible and later sprayed the stems with Plantskydd. Short of spraying ground-up rabbit guts on them I don't know how to make them any more distasteful. Never fear, next year will be better. My biggest worry is that they could be a vector for spreading virus as I have a couple that are suspect.

Even the neighbors are complaining about their gardens being ruined that I don't even have to hide when I'm out trying to shoot them. I can handle losing a stem or two but this is ridiculous. Maybe I could use that nice orange tabby for back-up as the cats around here seem to be slackers.
disregard the mess, I went on a rampage with the hedge clippers and chopped off all the over-hanging daylily foliage so I could more easily inocculate the bunnies with lead....

Oh, man, that calls for war!

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

You know it, honey! It was that clump and my chewed Lily Von Shtupp that made me really go ballistic.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Sorry to see how bad it is Moby. Keep that gun blazing.

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

Go get 'em Moby!!!

Divernon, IL(Zone 5b)

Awesome (my top favorite of all the lilies I grow).
