Favorite Garden Gloves

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

What are your all-time favorite garden gloves to wear while working outside? I've been using the nitrile kind, but they start stinking after awhile. Wonder if I can wash them???

Orrville, OH(Zone 5b)

I keep three pairs. One to wear, one for the wash, and one for spare. The nitrile does wonderful in the wash.

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

I'll jump in here and tell you the Atlas gloves #370 are by far the best gloves I've ever used...and I've been gardening a long time and gone thru some fairly expensive...and cheap gloves. Palm Flex has a website where you can order by the dozen that seemed inexpensive, as the ones at the garden stores are usually $6. a pair. I believe I paid about $4. a pair. BUT...one of my garden club members was able to beat the price getting them for $1.87 a pair at another website. Our club ordered $600. worth! I didn't buy any at this time, but I will later on. The Atlas gloves go into the washer (not dryer) and are nearly indestructible. If you're interested in chking out the website, I'll find it in my garden club info.

I bought several pairs of the Atlas 370's a few years ago and love them. They wash well and last forever. I'm nearly out, however, and would love for someone to have another co-op for them!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I have the Atlas Nitrile ones. Glad to know I can toss them in the wash!! I really do like them, but boy do they really start stinking after awhile! I have 3 pairs.

Patricia, why don't you work on that co-op?

Goldthwaite, TX(Zone 8a)

I used to help with a lot of co-ops and even hosted a couple, but I am now retired.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

I like the Atlas too.

Those look space age! I am sitting here looking at my torn up hands and hang nails wondering...why don't I wear gloves? I break down and put a pair on if I have to deal with cacti or agave.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I wear gloves when I plan on doing something out in the yard, but I also catch myself going out to feed fish, etc., before I know it my hands are filthy. Manicures are a waste of money for me.
I love the nitrile coated gloves...keeps your hands semi-dry and do well in the washing machine...just don't put them in the dryer! LOL!
Got this package of 5 pair for $5 at Lowe's yesterday! Only problem with these is they are large, but you can see they are not huge on my hands which are small, but would fit a larger hand even better.
Love the bionic gloves but roses are not my thing and I almost always wear denium shirt to garden. Love the Atlas, but I seem to wear out all of them over time.

Ok. I just ordered 12 pr. of the Atlas gloves #370 on eBay...hoping they last the rest of my life...^^_^^

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

LOL! Hope you live much longer that 12 pairs!!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

LOL Linda!!

Grandview, TX(Zone 8a)

I love the Atlas gloves also. Won't wear anything but :)

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

I have the atlas 370 aswell. Too embarrassed to tell you how many but enough that I can throw the dirty ones in a box and wash and air dry and still have enough. Those long ones would be great for some of those thorny roses.

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9a)

Are there cheaper knock-offs of these gloves? I bought some that looked similar, dont remember what I paid but the uncoated part was really itchy on my skin. I dont think nylon would have felt like that.

Irving, TX(Zone 8a)

Bionic gloves are really comfortable. They hug your hands and they are great around roses or if you dig by mistake on a fire ants nest.
They are worth all their price and more.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

HI Marty.... Not sure if you meant knock-offs of the nitrile coated, but I got some once and hated them, they were rough and itchy. That said, I like the nylon nitrile glove that I bought at Lowe's for only a $1 a pair. I have small hands and can't get a glove that fits tight anyway. I have had a chance to use them now, and can say I would buy more of them.

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

I am going to order a pair of the rose gloves. If I am going to see you at the RU in June, I can order a pair for you. Dmail me

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Anna who?

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9a)

Thanks, Sheila. I just wanted to try to understand what folks were discussing and whether I had tried the exact same thing or whether it had been something similar but not as good. Thanks for letting me know that there is another type that feels good and not itchy.Did you get yours from Lowes recently? I want to look and see if I can get some nylon ones.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Marty...the ones I got are 100% polyester with 100% nitrile coating. Just picked them up last weekend.

Good thread!
I used to use gloves made of a neat cotton fabric (old school) b/c they were comfortable, and easier to 'feel' things, plus I could wash them. Granted, I got holes in them quickly, esp. on the tips, so that was not good.

I've tried gloves with fabric backs and good grips (guess that's what you guys mean by the nitrile (?), but my hands tend to sweat in those type gloves. They tend to grab more than I bargain for and I get annoyed (lol don't I sound old?!!)

ANYWAY.... that being said, when I use my gloves for more heavy duty stuff (shoveling, raking, hoeing, weeding w/thorns), I LOVE LOVE my leather gloves. We have a lot of weeds with thorns. I'd say 90% of them won't penetrate the leather. I have been amazed at how long they last and I DO wash mine. They're a bit 'weird' after a wash, but no different than if I left them out in the rain.

Sorry so long.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

drthor....you didn't mention they had those without the long cuffs. Those I would consider, but not for everything I do. Mucking out the pond skimmer comes to mind! LOL!

Irving, TX(Zone 8a)

Sheila_FW I have only used the longer Bionic gloves. They are amazing !

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Can't wait to get the bionics. Have been looking everywhere for a glove that comes above my wrist. "Rose" gloves used to be common. I have reached a certain age where I easily cut and bruise without even realizing it. Most of the time I look like I have been in a cat fight and the cat won. hahahahaha

Irving, TX(Zone 8a)

Let me know how you like them.
I found out about those gloves at a Rose Convention. They were advertised to prevent carpal tunnel syndrome.
I not only use with roses, but with all my gardening need. I bust two pair a year because I dig in the clay with them ... which I shouldn't !!!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

I live only about 20 miles from you. Know all about the clay.

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

Ok. My neon orange atlas 370 Nitrile gloves are on my hands, and I love them!

I think I will die before I wear these 12 pairs out! Maybe I'll die while wearing these gloves!

Linda

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Too funny Linda!

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

We can can only hope we live long and healthy enough for that to happen!

Bellaire, TX

Because of an allergy to something in dirt, my first layer are Foxgloves (ridiculously expensive, but this glove fits tightly enough to prevent dirt from sneaking down onto my hand). The second layer is the Atlas NT370. I wish I could wear just the Atlas, but no such luck. It took me years to find this solution to the bleeding rash I get if dirt touches my hands. Pretty sad, huh?
Leslie

Grapeland, TX

i really need to get some gloves. I have a cheap $1 pair from the $ store...other than that i do all bare handed

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Wow Leslie....that is pretty bad for a person that loves to garden. I had a facial rash for a year and never knew what caused it. The derm. Dr. said it was peridonal dermatitus and I have to watch being out in the sun and make sure to wear sunscreen, very little makeup because I can't use the harsh removers. I went to wearing hats, that lead to me getting a drastically short haircut. But I love my gardening.

Don't know how old you are Lizzy, but it is never too late to start wearing gloves. (Yes from years not caring and hands that look like it).

Grapeland, TX

I am 52...and yes...my hands show it. I have always loved to be outside and work outside..even as a little girl.

Thanks for the great thread!

I just have to chime in on this discussion and say that my favorite gloves are sold at Harbor Freight Stores. They are Western Safety brand, item 90909, yellow and grey, and are actually for use when moving lumber, working with sharp objects or concrete, but they are great for gardening.

I have washed mine in the sink. As cheap as they are I just throw them away when the rubber begins to flake off on the tips. A master gardener in our garden club recommended these to our club as her favorite. They usually cost about $2 a pr. When they go on sale I grab at least a half dozen. They are textured natural latex rubber coated over a knit fabric glove made of 50 % cotton and 50 % poleyester. a small portion of the top of your hand and top of your fingers are only knit. This knit body lets them be comfortable, flexible, and breathe, unlike rubber gloves.

I also think I need to try the Atlas gloves since so many like them.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh dear! Harbor Freight is right around the corner from me. Lowe's is across the parking lot from my work. LOL

Bellaire, TX

Because I get too hot in hats, I use an unusually large visor which is open on the crown. Doesn't do my hair color a lot of good, but . . . . My dermatologist sells them, however, I now know to order directly (to save a few bucks). I slather on the sunscreen, which I've had to do since 1974 (too many biopsies). It's done wonders for my skin.

It took me quite a while to get used to wearing a double set of gloves. The gloves also have helped, at least, with a problem I had after a teensy rose stick. I nearly ended up in the hospital after a "thorn" got me next to a thumb nail. I never SAW or FELT the stick, but I got an infection that was extremely resistant to antibiotics. One can't be too careful about the sticks from rose prickles (technically they are thorns, but they darn sure feel like thorns). Gloves do help quite a bit. However, after having several infections from pricks I never felt or saw, I began giving away a number of roses. I still have a few that "bite," but I've warned them that they, too, could be headed elsewhere if they get me again.
Leslie

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

WOW! That is quite a testament to loving gardening enough to find a solution. I hope those roses behave for you! Do you put sunscreen on your head?

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Got the bionic gloves in the mail Saturday. Have had them on all day working happily in my flower garden. Thank you so much for the link.
