My F2 Grow-out

Norfolk, VA

It has been a 3- 4 year project so far and now I'm in the most exciting part, the F2 grow-out, which I will be able to get a lot of variation and probably an interesting breakthrough. It involves a 3-way cross (early call pink x early call blue) x a large-flowered light pink and white NOID. Since this is a 3-way cross, the variation may be all over the spectrum, even though many will have similar phenotypes. Hopefully everything works out well and the entire progeny will go to bloom.

Frank- Thank you for recomending that I post a seperate thread on this project. It's been a tedious project and I want to make sure that every plant in the progeny grows well and makes it to flowering. I know! It's a lot of processing and sampling, but it's very rewarding.

This is a progeny of 25 individuals.

Tony - Should be interesting to see what you get! Keep us posted!

This one has very narrow, sissors-like cotyledons.

I love Yoneda's website. I've learned more from that site than anywhere else. But the most information I've gotten is growing vines out myself. I learn by hands-on and personal experience. And many folks here have given me good tips on growing these vines! :-) For which I thank everyone!

Best of luck on the project. It sounds very interesting.

Tony - What are you planning to fertilize your vines with?

Norfolk, VA

Becky- I grind dried banana peels, dried egg shells, and dried orange peels, then I add a teaspoon of each per gallon of water. I bring contents to a boil and let it ferment for a couple of days, then I filter out the grounds an water away. At times, I would side dress my seedlings with ground banana peels to give them a good start:-) The tea is somewhat aromic, like oranges with a hint of banana.

Tony - Only organic fertilizer ... or tea (I should say)? You don't use any commercial fertilizer? That's pretty impressive that they get so big! I am wondering what does the orange peel contribute to the plants? You must have very fertile soil, too. Usually MGs are heavy feeders. Or at least mine are. Thanks for sharing your recipe! :-)

Norfolk, VA

Becky- I usually use the orange peel to buffer the pH of the fertilizer, but may have some nutrients.

Tony - Does it make the ph more acidic?

MGMan, I find your project fascinating! Do you have any specific characteristics or sets of characteristics that you're trying to achieve — a singular "goal"? Or, are you growing successive filials to appreciate all the genetic diversity? I guess both questions could be answered "yes," but my curious mind would love to hear more of your thoughts. -Nick

MGMan here goes yet another one on the other side of the fence, so sorry as I find this subject quite fascinating!
Please continue to inform and educate us with your progress and knowledge!

Tony - You were in the seed swap this past Fall. Did you happen to share any of your seeds with the particpants? I am growing one seed from each person's seed packet. Most of the seeds from everyone that I have sowed have germinated. Your vine is growing like a weed! I was looking at the leaves and your photos ... trying to determine if they were seeds from the same parent plant cross? It's always cool to see what happens if you get a lot of seeds from particular cross and different folks have the opportunity to grow them out too.

Thank you terry,

MGMan, since you mentioned doing the same cross that made Yuneda so famous, I am on the prowl for Ipomoea nhil African origen. I still have to dig up the remainder of the seeds given to me by Ron and check them. The girls don't have any. So I went to B & T world seeds, and they didn't have any. I put them on a want list. I went to Silverhill Seeds and they didn't have any. So, we may be in for a wait.

That is what I like about this forum, the other people here are happy to help, and we all have internet.

I hope to someday see this cross, F1 flowers in the plant file. The category GREX was added for the Orchid people, but could also be used to record what this cross came from. Good Luck Frank

Becky-would you post a picture of the vine you are growing from the seeds I gave you. They are not from the same cross by the way. Hope you are able to get pretty flowers from this vine. Good luck:-)

Tony,
You have a great experiment going and how long do you estimate for blooms. Normally if all goes well, it is about 6-8 weeks for flowers. When did you sow these seeds if I may ask?

Also, It will be great to see what Becky gets out of your seeds, do you have anymore that you may want to trade? If you do shoot me a dmail and let me know what/which interest you.
A.

A- About 8-10 weeks, many may bloom a different times.

Tony - So the vine that I am currently growing is not one from your cross? I don't blame you if it's not. I am sure there are people out there who would love to get seeds from you and take credit for all your hard work. You are smart to publicly document your cross experiment! :-)

Here is a photo of the vine from a seed I got from you in the seed swap.

Terry - Thanks for cleaning up this thread! It's really appreciated! :-)

Becky- very impressive

Tony - Does it look familiar? Any idea what cultivar it is? Or shall we wait for it to bloom to figure out what it is? LOL!

Norfolk, VA

It probably looks like the NOID with purple & white margin. Not quite sure.

Here is a little update of my F2 grow-out of Akatsuki no umi x Early call pink. I just repotted them last night. Only just a progeny of ten this time. Is the purple coloring on cotyledon normal? Anything helps :-)

Clean flowers!

Quite lovely! Clean is my kind of MG.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Tony - I think your grow-out blooms are lovely! I am partial to the F1 results from Akatsuki no Umi x Early call pink! A lovely bloomer! I like the white borders on blooms! :-) A nice blue color too!

Norfolk, VA

Becky, I would like to see that same flower color and pattern as the F1 (Akatsuki no Umi x early call pink), but I would like to see the large-flowered phenotype and not the pink throat or halo, just straight-up blue and white. I had a jar load of seeds from that cross last year, so I may have many possibilities :-)

Norfolk, VA

(early call pink x early call blue) x large-flowered pink/white blizzard NOID seedling #9 has a little red streaking on a lighter pink background on the hypocotyl. Sorry for low quality. The streaking is somewhere to the right.

Here is the F2 progeny a week after repotting. Most of them have the ordinary leaf phenotype, but some have the cicada-like leaf.

Hear is also an update on Akatsuki no Umi x Early call pink. Most have the ordinary leaf phenotype.

Tony - Nice looking seedlings you have growing! Should be interesting to see what blooms you get from all these babies! I hope you get a large-flowered phenotype that is blue and white! I'm thinking you might get some surprises in there! ;-)

Norfolk, VA

Here is an update of Akatsuki no Umi x Early call pink, I just save the most robust 3 shoots and then remove the rest and then I space them out and make a teepee for each pot out of bamboo or straight sticks as shown in two individuals in the diagram. The progeny is still in numerical order.

I will do the same thing with my 3- way cross when they grow to their appropiate size. I just spaced them out for now.

Vines 4 and 7 of (Akatsuki no Umi x Early call pink, F2 )posses buds and should bloom within the next week or so.
