Is anyone growing Primulina tabacum?

Chicago, IL(Zone 6a)

I have another leaf down and it's making plantlets. If you want to, I'll put you name on them. :)

As for trade: I'm absoulutely sure that we can work something out!

Works for me thank you maam

The plantlets should be ready to ship in about two weeks. If they shouldn't work out, I can always send you a leaf or two. :)

YAAAY!!!!

Pretty!

Thanks. And plenty more to come. It's funny, just like with other Gesneriads, the first flowers came out somewhat larger and distorted. Now, everything seems to be fine. One of the distorted flowers is visible to the right of the regular one.

sweet little flower -- and I love lavedered blue colors!

The colors are off in the picture. As is usually the case for a lot of purple/blue flowers. Well, in reality, the flower is much more blue and less purple and the white parts of the petals are a bit whiter.

Nevertheless, it's been an easy and rewarding species to grow for me. It's been happily growing in a bright North window for the past two months and has increased in size enormously (From about 6" across when I first got it to over a foot in only 3 months). Being a fast and vigorous grower, ample food and water are necessary to maintain good shape and flower production.

A whopping 17 inches across after three months in good mix and plenty of water and food.

That's great Olaf!

It has proven to be very tough and easy to grow. I love the plant. Although the flowers are small, they are pretty nevertheless. It's a mystery to me ehy not more people are growing it.

Any babies yet?

Chicago, IL(Zone 6a)

I have a few very weak babies that don't seem like they want to make it. I have the feeling that they grow better in Spring or Fall than in Summer.

I think, the smartest would be if I'd just send you a leaf once this heat wave is over.

I grew this one about 7 years ago alongside my av's on a wicking tray. Its pretty quick to bloom with good light and steady moisture.

Thanks everyone for reviving this thread! It's been a while...

Thanks, lovemygessies for your input! :)

All I can say about my P. tabacum is this: Got it in March, repotted four times in three months, keeping it now in a 6" pot but it's letting me know that it's getting root bound.

A heavily obstructed North window, lots of food and water, frequent repotting and you'll have a show plant in no time.

Leaves root easy and make a few plantlets.

So far, my plant has survived temps from 45 to 110 without any complaint whatsoever.

It survived nearly two weeks of absolute neglect during our August heat wave (triple digits and humidity in the 80s).

I know that it needs grooming and repotting but here it is...

Primulina tabacum. Bought 03/19/2011. It was ca. 6 1/2 inches across. Now, 08/24/2011, it's about 20" across, full of flowers and needs repotting - BAD!

It is beautiful! You did a great job with it...congratulations!
Keep that plant going and bring it to Michigan in June for the AVSA convention!

Thanks Diane!

I actually have this thought in the back of my mind to enter it next year at the local Gesneriad show and sale and maybe try her out at the Little Show at a meeting... :)

It's a gorgeous plant. You've really grown it well. I love the bouquets of striped purple stars against those green leaves, and the yellow container is the perfect color contrast.
Here's the baby you sent my way, Olaf, in its original container marked 5/12/11. I suppose I should repot now.

Hey Jamie!

Great job with the baby! Well, The second you repot it, it'll burst into growth. This one is just waiting for that opportunity.

I repotted mine three times in three months after I got the plant in March. They are not like the Primulinas formerly known as Chiritas. Unlike those, P. tabacum likes much more water and fertilizer. Maybe not as much as a Kohleria but close...

I don't think that you can repot P. tabacum too often. They really seem to enjoy the fresh soil and bigger pot.

They can be a bit slow off the start with blooming but once started, they won't stop... :)
