Morning Glories 2011 #01

Some of the seeds of Sidare took a month to finally sprout. So for anyone not getting sprouts right away ... have patience! :-)

The Sweet Potato Vine 'Margarita' that I had growing in the tipsy pot last year got killed by the freezing temps we had this winter. But the vine draped down onto the ground last year and apparently rooted in the dirt! So I didn't entirely lose it like I had thought. Yay!

Nick, gorgeous blues.
Becky Indica is a special m glory. Great color.
Nice to see a pic of
the Chinese Yellow Evening Glory Pretty shade of yellow.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I agree with Jackie!

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Thank you Jackie and Debra!

Neither one of you have I. indica anymore? I think I "may" have found a seedling to cross mine with. I am hoping that the seedling is a true indica plant, too. If so, I hope to get some seeds from my vines. And if I do, I'll gladly share! ;-)

Jackie - The YCEG only had that one bloom! LOL! Stingy bloomer this year apparently. I am using Bloom Booster on it, so it might cough up some more blooms ... but I'm not holding my breath waiting for that to happen. That is a wild one, for sure! And very unpredictable when it comes to blooming. At least it's an aggressive growing vine! :-)

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Becky, I have an indica going. I don't know if I will see blooms this yr or not.
My yellow Yukon has not geminated yet so I might start another Chinese Yellow
Evening glory and hope it sprouts. I love the yellows

Y'all inspired me to take a "show photo" of 'Hatsu Arashi'. Don't ask me why the camera read the bloom color as light blue. They're as cobalt-blue as the pot in which they're planted. This particular container is usually situated in a large east-facing window in my living room. Seems to be growing fine with that amount of light... so far.

Becky, what is the blue one after the pink flaked hindge?

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

zinniared - How are you? Nice to see you posting again!

Are you asking about the ID of this one? http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=8501062

If so, I believe it is Kniola Black I. purpurea. It's a really dark color of bloom. It is a volunteer from last year. It doesn't look like a cross either. It really stands out against the white fencing. I may have seeds from it soon! LOL!

Virginia Beach, VA(Zone 7b)

Thanks Becky. Yes that's the one. It's very pretty. I was almost thinking it was Grampa Ott's...
I planted some of the seeds you sent me. They are little little plants right now.. They will go
into ground soon.
Just the other day I was looking for the pandy's that Jackie sent me and I couldn't find them.
They should have sprouted by now. I have so many seedlings in plastic cups, veggies and
flowers. Maybe I just missed them. Luckily I have 2 backup seeds left.
I know I don't post that much here, but I do like too look.

Hold everythink you guys.
Have faith.
I planted some of Beckys MG seeds April 10. Some germinated in a couple of days . I thought the rest were just gonners but Chocolate silk is making a showing after nearly 3 weeks.

Sorry the Chocolate is out of focus.

I, too, have had some in my recent batch of sowed seeds that germinated several weeks later ... and out of 40 cups of seeds, I have about 11 cups of seeds that haven't even germinated yet! But every so often, another one will sprout. Mine are indoors under lights and I am wondering if heat is a major factor to get them to germinate. My house is air-conditioned. So ... have patience!

Glad to hear that some are still germinating for y'all! :-) :-) Thanks for letting me know and everyone else. Several people besides the two of you have also told me that some of the seeds I sent are slow to germinate. I don't have any really old seeds that I have sent out. Most seeds are newly collected and others might be a couple years old. MG seeds stay viable for a very long time. Years!!! Can't wait to see bloom photos! I am always wondering who got crosses! :-)

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Just like you Becky. I am not counting them out. The later germs came on when the weather turned warme. Mine are in the livingroom window with coleus.
I give them until Memorial Day week to fail. The growing ones will go out side then.

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks again to all who shared seeds! I'm really happy that this one that was in a packet with (open-pollinated) blues, as it turned out to be a such a pleasant surprise. It's quite dainty, too, at only 1.5" across.

beautiful!

Here is a little F2 grow-out of Akatsuki no Umi x Early call pink. 5 individuals seem to have varigation and 7 have the round cotyledon phenotype, which probably means the flowers will be large.

Debra, all I know is it should be a soft yellow bloom.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Tony - I am looking forward to seeing your blooms! The seedlings look very healthy and seem to be growing quickly!

Nifty - Beautiful blooms ... all of them! :-) :-) :-)

I had a bloom flush from I. indica today! Those vines and blooms really take the show in my yard right now! The flowers are stunning! What a great vine for an arbor!

Debra - Ukon or Yukon - however it's called is a Kyushu University creation. It's rare because it is a yellow I. nil. Pale yellow, but yellow nonetheless.

Becky, I love that pic of Yukon yellow, great shot. Your indica is a beauty too.
Love it's showy blooms

Nick, your blooms are gorgeous

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks Jackie! I couldn't have experienced the variety of blooms without the generosity and advice from the numerous kind souls who shared/traded seeds with me.

For example, here's the first bloom from Ronnie's "backporch" I. purpurea

A couple from a mix from Karen/bluespiral

#1 - plum with "variegation"? "streaking"? not sure which term to use!

#2 - purple with "flecks"? again, not sure about the terminology for the different characteristics

nifty - Congrats on so many lovely blooms! Interesting bloom on the plum with "variegation" from Karen!

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks Becky... every morning is kinda like Christmas again! It's nice to have these surprises to look forward to! :)

I have at least 23 named cultivars/species I'm still waiting on to bloom. I haven't been this obsessed since I started collecting & hybridizing daylilies several year ago. lol!
