Garden Projects 2011 #2

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Raking for year is always a good idea. I keep wondering if I just thought that I had raked the whole thing a month ago.

I cleaned up the shed today as knee was not happy to do much more than that. I have a brace on it and hope it works better tomorrow. I took everything out of the shed, including some dead voles. Attractive. Put lots of old plastic pots into recycle and thinned out some other stuff. Got the hoses out for the season. And just organized everything. Ready to go. Patti

South Hamilton, MA

voles make good fertilizer? If they are spread around the gaden crows & raptors might appear & the scent chases others away?

Hallowell, ME

Bill - if you don't have room for those JM's I'll take a couple off your hands. I don't need any dirt though.

Nice haul on your shrubs Patti. Wish our local nursery would do that.

Busy yesterday starting more seeds in basement. Planted lettuce to (outside). Using a container placed on a table to hopefully keep the groundhogs at bay. Got some raking done but still have several beds remaining. I couldn't believe how nice and warm it was outside.

DW got an order in (too early). Have to bring some inside and some she'll be able to plant outside since they haven't sprung too much growth (bare root).

Thomaston, CT

Only my rhubarb came....now to keep the #$%^ airedale away from it......

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

I never think about where I'm going to plant things when I buy stuff, either. I usually always find a spot.

Yesterday I spent 5 hours working in the yard. Last night and this morning my arthritic ankle was hurting so bad. Not as much now. I might get out and do a little more. Yesterday I planted 7 of the perennials I bought last week. I got in the hellebore, pulmonaria, brunnera, columbine, heuchera and polemonium. I also planted some johnny jump-ups and divided a few hostas. After that I did more cleanup work in the front yard. I got part of my sales area cleaned up and potted up some NOID daylilies that I had dug last year to sell at my plant sale. They didn't sell, and were not taken at my RU, either. So now they're potted up.

Karen, that sounds like a lot of work. NOID DL's are always fun. Surprised no on gobbled them up.

I divided some primula, then dug up an old Beach Plum that I have been growing since finding it in the grass as a tiny self seeded one for many years. I may have killed it. Time will tell, but it had to be moved. I just didn't get many roots when I lifted it. Bad Mom.

I weeded and cleaned up around a herd of Viburnums and a few other trees and shrubs. I took off their cages and hope the rabbits leave them alone. We planted the shrubs I bought yesterday and moved 3 things the deer or rabbits seem to be eating, though they were suppose to avoid. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

DH took all the ashes from the burn pit and put them in a rosa rugosa bed, then we raked and seeded the burn pit and now watering it. Good thing I got out all the hoses yesterday. I moved the bench to a new possible position as sugguest by IrisMa, but will live with it for a few days before digging up stuff that would have to be moved if I like it sideways. Thanks IrisMa.

I need to weed some of the beds, but next on the todo list is to dig out a big natural berm in the woods so I can use the dirt in the new bed to fill in some low spots. We need to clean up the veggie bed and plant spring crops like Frank up in Maine has already done.

Applause for Frank.

But a good day despite having to dig with my left foot as the right knee is still a mess. A collage of some shots taken today. Patti

Wha, Nice flag, nice pile, nice arch and beautiful birdhouse and walls. We are about to order our mulch, plus the guys to put it in the beds. Too much for me to do. 25 yards. Getting old. Patti

Excellent ad, Jo Ann. Worth seeing twice!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Definitely, Pirl. I want to ride.

Thomaston, CT

That was wonderful, Jo! Sherrie, arnica gel does wonders for the aches & pains!

South Hamilton, MA

I hope the bench position works out. I would want to see both gardens without twisting my head. DH working on rooted weeds with the hori hori knife this afternoon.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

My dream fantasy was a "Bike ride" that gone with the three affairs all at once with different men, idea.

Hallowell, ME

Those were the days. Should have kept my license current. DS broke his bike out yesterday. There's just something about the freedom one feels when riding bikes!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Talk about an 'easy' rider, Jo!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

The mind is all thats left.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Thanks for that Ge1836. I love their faces. Patti

Funny, Victor.

Maybe Jo Ann wanted one to cook, one to garden and one for...fun.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

You have the best ideas Pirl !

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

order for compost is in - looking forward to building beds and moving it around the yard.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Wha, Where are you building more beds, oh, perhaps roof beds? Patti

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

LOVE that video!!!!

Ok, all I need advice....
I'm being very indecisive on what I want in that berm...I thought I had a plan, but now I'm finding other things I really love...but do I just go with my first plan???
I originally wanted a Hamamelis, one of the smaller ones, http://www.rarefindnursery.com/index.cfm/action/productdetail/product_id/3949.htm
but now I'm thinking Ruby Falls Cercis
http://www.rarefindnursery.com/index.cfm/action/productdetail/product_id/5574.htm
and then maybe with this Weigela???

with this???

HELP!!!!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

that berm has room for them all jen:)

patti when you stop by you can see where the new/expanded beds are - no plans for the roof yet.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Well you're no help! LOL

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I especially like the redbud

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I like that too.

I have a question about raised beds. I want to add one next to my raspberry patch for a few veggies. I bought more than I needed, so have the opportunity to make it 12-24" in height. I was planning on 12". I really don't have space to put another one, but don't want to waste the extra materials. If anyone has raised beds, what height do you prefer?

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Depends on how far you want to bend. I prefer lower to give me more exercise.LOL

Hallowell, ME

Deb - My beds are about 6" but I have sand about a foot underneath. I have thought about raising them to 12 but that's as high as I'd go.

Jen - you have some beautiful choices already. Whatever you decide I personallly would probably add some geraniums and minature roses and for sure a peony or two. Berms make nice rock gardens too.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Mine are 30" and I love them.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Turf grass would look great on a berm, Jen.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Victor, do you need to water much more often at 30"?

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I need to make if very neat and not cottagy, even though hubby isn't a formal type guy he likes formality in the garden...go figure!

Was looking at some kind of grass, either a real light chartreuse or a purpley red

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Actually, it's the opposite, Deb. Holds much more water. Other benefit is that it warms up earlier if one of the long sides is toward the south. And you can easily bend some pvc tubing and cover it. Wish I had more.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Deb! have you started the new garden you talked about? Hubby wanted as much grass as possible. How did that go?

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i started a new project last night - getting lables on the markers - did the jm's first - about 90 of them - it takes time and all i could think about was how much time it will take to put them around the yard!

tonight i will tackle the trees and maybe conifers.

they did meet with the wifes approval

if i ever have another ru i will not require notes:)
