Garden Projects 2011 #2
thx for the new thread joann - nice lines on that bed!
Hired some guys to edge some of the gardens. Grass was migrating where it was hard to weed out.
Its only money.
Looks great! Patti, a pond sounds awesome....your land already looks like a botanical garden! My only project for today is raking the front lawn....
DH just decided that we are burning today as the wind, which was wicked yesterday, has laid down or as we say,
" Flat- assed Calm" so out to get it going. I am moving half fast today as I did too much yesterday. So I may put off my edging project to do some pruning over where I can keep an eye on the fire and keep adding to it as we have a mountain to burn. And no marshmallows. I am thinking we should do dogs for dinner. Maybe Fenway Franks, poor Sox.
Ge1836, Love the edging and all your vertical accents in your garden. I need some verticals aside from trees and shrubs. We had a big interesting stump for years in the woods, but rather than burn it now that DH wrestled it out into the yard , I think I need to find a spot to use it as a garden feature. But I will only be able to have it moved once as it is too big and heavy even with a dolly to try it in various spots. I think I have one shot to get it right or I will get the eye rolling thing from DH. Can't quite figure it out yet, but I will. It was well hidden, until we cleaned up that part of the yard recently and needed to be moved or burned.
Robindog, the endless stream is enough, at least for now. You are as bad as Wha. We couldn't have fish, too many herons in the neighborhood. Here is a shot looking down the stream to the new area which is behind the bench. We need to rethink the bench position to connect the space better. Always something. I am thinking of putting a stone bench with no back where the wooden one is now and moving the wooden one up to the top of the new stone stairs. That would open up the space and you could sit on the stone one facing either direction, but still pondering the problem. Patti
Can I suggest just turning the bench sideways? I need a lot of sit down places & that way you could rest looking in both directions. I would need to rest much more than you do & like the sweep of the land, even though cluttered with JMs.
first lucy there is not such thing a "cluttered" with jms! :)
patti i bet there is a nice flat stone in VT just waiting to move to nantucket :) now if there where two in VT i could assist for one :)
oh, really?
Love the heron sculpture!
I like it too, had to go back to look, missed it the first time.
I missed it too - in the shadows.
Patti, the new area is looking fantastic. I think that bench would look great at the top of the stone stairs so you can look down on the view. Lucy, I would need to rest a lot more than Patti does, too!
Karen
i like it to and missed it as well
Thanks, I think I need to rest more than any of you. But being retired, I have more free time than many. Spoiled.
I gave that steel Heron from Africa to my now deceased Mother in Law in the early 80's for her Belmont garden but she moved it to a pond at her house on Nantucket after a couple of years. She was a big time birder and loved it, but when she died, I took it back. We took it to our garden in Vt for a long time, before I brought it back to Nantucket when I built the endless stream. I found it at a trade show in NYC selling fair trade items from Africa. I sold many items made by them in my Bookstores, but I only bought the one Heron for MIL as it was too big for my stores. So that Heron is a world traveler, Patti
I have always admired them. No Heron here on the hill with no pond.
Love to have some sort of bird for the garden tho.
There is a nesting area of herons at the Sterling Nature Center, I've only gone once, but enjoyed watching them. I could do something like that for a few hours while DH is ready to go after 30 minutes.
Is the Sterling center near Avon .I used to go to a road there to watch migrating Short Eares Owles and there was a Huge Heron nesting place along the road. The bird droppings had killed most of the trees. It was neat to see the nests in the dead trees.
It's about halfway between here and Syracuse
Different spot then.
Montezuma Swamp? area?
Near Oswego, had to look it up, I couldn't remember

Pretty!
I've been looking at places in upstate N.Y. to visit as DH & I have been visiting waterfalls in Maine and N.H We thought we would do VT. and NY next.....Buttermilk Falls, Glen Falls and Letchworth State Park are ones we've been looking at.
You wont be sorry you went all are great altho Buttermilk is in the middle of town almost.
Watkins Glen is fantastic and Letchworth is known as the Grand Canion of the east. A lot of central new york has falls,Treaman State Park is good but Tahaganock( sp) State park is fantastic.
Sterling is great I never have been there.
I watched Owles in late Feb early March on Nations Road between Avon and Genesseo. Havnt been there in over 20 years. Its close to the Genessee River so its a nice migration route. Hawks too and once I saw an Eagle.
Thanks for the info Ge!!!
Think I'm finally going to start yard cleanup. Still have some snow but I can still get a good start on most of the yard. Lot of fallen branches and last years growth to pick up. It'll give me a sense of doing something anyway.
No problem I am from that area as a kid. If I had to choose which falls to omit ,it would be Buttermilk.
Happy to have the story on the heron....he was a real migratory bird! Pixie, Kent Falls in CT are very nice....and the airedale rescue is next door.....Denis is a sculptor of large metal pieces, life-sized elephants, ballerinas, & of course, airedales!
Thanks Robin!
Frank I know what you mean...before the 14" we got I had raked a patch of bare lawn just because I could!! LOL
We gotta do it when we can Pixie!
Patti - love the whole look of the endless stream. I recall very well following your progress as you were "building" it. I remain impressed, and I also love the heron sculpture! Very serene place! I also like wha's idea of a nice stone for sitting and watching the flat-assed calm winds. lol
Robin - I love Kent Falls. Hank and I went there on our honeymoon on our way back from Lenox, Mass. Very lovely.
JoAnn - your new edging of your beds looks great!
I've been to the very top of those falls, Louise....the Curtisses open their property twice a year for folks who've rescued airedales, & take everyone up to the top....very impressive....
I've been there too. Nice.
Do you remember the sculptures, Victor? Denis is very talented.....
No. Been quite a while now. Almost 20 yrs.
Well, you can always make a return visit!
big day today - i raked most of the yard with only half of the backyard left - had 10 yds of top soil delivered - better half asked me what it was for and i proceeded to tell her about some beds expansion and new beds - her only comment was - why?
have no clue where 18 jm's will go so i will need beds and will expel some stuff that does not cut it
tomorrow i will finish the back yard and celebrate my oldest daughters b-day 2 days late with my grand daughter - grand daughter sounds like i am old - had my daughter at 21 so i could enjoy the g-kids early in life.
Yes, you have to have stamina for those grandkids! My former superintendent was in the library with his GD when I was there with mine today....I spent about 3 hours in the yard raking & liming.....still have about 6 little gardens to clean out......
You are old, Bill. ^_^
I never think about where I will plant things when I order them. Anyone can do that!
Bill I was married at 19. Babies right away #4 all girlmy mother was knocked off her pins.
Young grampas are the best.
I believe in practicing for many years before having babies. ^_^
