My Russians are just starting to bloom . . . Here are some blooms from EK-Nautilus . . . really wish more of hers were registered!

Description: Large semi-double ruffled bluish-white flowers. Standard

Now, is it just me, or are so many of the blooms that are described as "blue" actually look "purple"?

Here is a bloom from one grown from a leaf labeled as "EK-Vesennaya Akvarel" . . . the description puts it as cream color with pink sprayed on edges . . . I'm hoping that future blooms will be more creamy . . .

Really pretty! I love the ones with a different colored edge. It does look purple though.

Sweet!

Totally agree about the blue vs purple issue. I think part of it is that many purples photograph as blue, and I guess maybe the descriptions are based on photos? In any case it is a real pet peeve of mine!

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

I've had blues photograph as purples as well. Have had to toss many great photos b/c the color was not accurate. And...have spent lots of time playing with my camera's white balance, and trying the effects of different types/sources of lighting. I see some photography courses in my future... :P

Also, the descriptions are written by the plant's hybridizer and submitted to the AVSA for approval/registration.

russian version of purple??? In slavic everything is blue....life simplified.

Colorblind???

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Sorry....can't speak for the Russian growers :P
And now that I think of it, I have never grown a Russian violet! ^_^

curious. What does EK mean as in russian violets.?

Longboat Key, FL(Zone 9b)

I am answering my own question EK As in "E Korshunova" is the hybridizer

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

She's a real nice lady to email back and forth with . . .

Akron, OH(Zone 5a)

Have you contacted her Nichole? I'd love to talk to her, she seems to create the best Russians I saw, at least in comparison to say Makuni...

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

I first emailed her a few weeks ago, when the baby russians I have of hers started to bloom. I am getting ready for the club show at the end of this month, and some of the plants I have of hers aren't registered, and I've lost some of the descriptions. I asked her if she could give me the descriptions for a few, and she replied back that she didn't have the descriptions in english, but that I could have google translate her website. That's been interesting! I asked her a question again last night, and she replied back that I could use any of the pix from her website to show buyers what the blooms will look like . . .

Akron, OH(Zone 5a)

If you need help with translation from Russian? just LMK, will be happy to help

Akron, OH(Zone 5a)

Does she have her own website? I had no luck when tried to google it

http://www.ek-fialki.com/

Akron, OH(Zone 5a)

Thanks, had no idea about the website. Can you believe she doesn't fertilize her plants, just repots into fresh soil, isn't it interesting?

Sorry for hijacking the thread, promise to post my blooms too!

Akron, OH(Zone 5a)

BTW here is the descriptions of many Russians:

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

That's where I got the link for her email, was from the AVSA russian listings . . . ^_^

Akron, OH(Zone 5a)

You figured it out all right Nichole, hehe. I'm thinking about getting a few leaves too when it's warms up here. Helene, Russian leaves swap is a great idea, I'm sure there will be much interest on this forum. Especially when you post your pics lol

Longboat Key, FL(Zone 9b)

On a side note . . . capillary matting . . . who uses it?

Montgomery, AL

I only use it to root leaves.

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Well, wick watering isn't really working for my plants. I remember in the house before I moved into the apartment, that my wicked plants just loved the capillary matting. So, I went and got some acrylic felt yesterday. Got it cut to size, and put the tray together with the egg crate, felt, etc. Put in the water . . . I thought the felt should be soaked by the time I got home from work, but the top is still dry. I put in more water, but I was wondering if I needed to just get the felt wet before putting it in the tray . . . Seems to me the last time that it took a bit, but the felt got itself wet eventually. Don't remember it taking hours, though . . .

Longboat Key, FL(Zone 9b)

Tha's is how I grew over 2000 - yes 2M. Cappilary matting - off white blankets on top of egg crates (the kind you get for flourescent lights) - Had beautiful AV's thnking of going that route again - Having new trays coming as we speaksince my collection is increasing sooooo.
May be you have to soak what you bought first and then try again.

Blankets are sturdy and mashine washable.

Longboat Key, FL(Zone 9b)

If a few show interest in a Russain AV exchange I can start a new thread.

I thought perhaps something like this
see who is interested,
Then who has what
then who wants what from whom
or other suggestions!?

Also guiding on shipping methods. I just saw where this person actually makes little vases with Alum Foil for shipping, interesting.

Longboat Key, FL(Zone 9b)

This was my set - up years ago.

Had 3 shelves built of wood, dthem with heavy plastic egg crate cut to size and off-white nylon/wool fluffy blankets cut to size.

Helene- 2,000!!!! I have about 200 and it's becoming too much for me. I give 'gift' them away at every club meeting and anyone who comes to my house! I can't even imagine more. You are a machine!

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Speaking of trades (Russian, non-Russian) . . . don't forget to keep your Want/Have list updated in the sticky thread. I just got done updating mine, and I tell you what . . . put that off for too long!

Longboat Key, FL(Zone 9b)

You see if you are into showing as I was then, you need them coming small medium and large plants you can not just count on one plant..... and I was going into selling off leaves. It never happend.
