Awesome Zone Maps!

SF Bay Area, CA(Zone 9b)

I found this last month. It's AWESOME! You can almost go as far down as street level to get your USDA Hardiness Zone! For example I was able to find out that I'm on the edge of Zones 9b and 10a. Since I have gotten into the 20s on occasion I kept myself in Zone 9b: http://www.plantmaps.com/ In addition, it has hardiness zone maps for Canada and the UK!

Even better, if you click on your state you'll see on the right-hand side other interactive gardening maps and date, including an interactive HEAT ZONE map for your state!

Here is a second heat zone map for the US from the American Horticultural Society: http://www.ahs.org/publications/heat_zone_map.htm

I thought I gave Admin this info before, but I can't find it, either here or in my dmails. Sorry if I'm repeating myself.

Albuquerque, NM(Zone 7a)

Amazing—on the http://www.plantmaps.com/ site I actually
zoomed right into my own block!

In February, right here in Albuquerque, we had -7° temps,
which was a record.

Thanks for these links.

Los Angeles, CA(Zone 10a)

Thanks for sharing, these maps are incredible!!!

mid central, FL(Zone 9a)

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Cool! Thanks... :)

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9a)

Thanks for the link. Im changing my zone after looking at this. Love the DG community!

North Pole, AK(Zone 1)

Hmmm...wondering when Alaska lost its statehood...Not included.
We range from zone 1 to 3/4

SF Bay Area, CA(Zone 9b)

You're very welcome. I was quite overwhelmed when I first saw the site.

Chocolatemoose, I never noticed that Alaska was missing. I've emailed them and asked why it's not there and if/when they're going to add it. Very odd, especially considering the amount of work they've done with all the rest of the site.

North Pole, AK(Zone 1)

Thanks!

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

june_nmexico, if you think that map of your neighborhood is amazing, you ought to try entering your address on Bing.com http://www.bing.com/maps/ and on the top of the map is the zoom in and rotate function, then select the Bird's Eye function for a great aerial view, better than satellite!

SF Bay Area, CA(Zone 9b)

That's the same technology that Zillow.com uses! Neat!

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Yep, they use the Bing maps.

SF Bay Area, CA(Zone 9b)

Zillow was using these maps before Bing existed. Wonder where they came from?

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Well I just had to find out, Wiki tells all!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bing_Maps

SF Bay Area, CA(Zone 9b)

I knew Zillow used something other than Bing maps. I remember now that I read your link - it was TerraServer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TerraServer-USA), which predated Bing.

Good research!

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

Nice maps faeden et all;o)

Mackinaw, IL(Zone 5a)

I found this map hilarious. My next door neighbor is retired, and has a lot of time on his hands. Hence, he spends a lot (a LOT) of time mowing, fertilizing, plugging, rolling, treating, dethatching, and otherwise trying to improve his lawn. He often scoffs at ours because we only mow it once a week (or less, if it is dry and brown), we don't water, and we don't use chemicals on our lawn. Had to chuckle when I saw the map, because his lawn looks dry and brown, and ours is emerald green. Of course, it could just be all the clover that I don't bother to poison (I like the bees!), but from the bird's-eye view, it looked pretty good!

Just for fun, I took a screen shot, and outlined our yard in yellow, and his in red. I don't think I'll show it to him, though. :)

Thanks for sharing the link!

I'm so happy that everyone is enjoying the maps! YAY!!

That's hilarious, Angie! You definitely should do that. LOL!!

Camdenton, MO(Zone 6a)

Thanks, Faeden, for the maps. Plantmaps.com is great.

Angie, that's funny! My house doesn't come in as clearly as yours does that close up. But that's probably because we live out in the boonies.

Wanaque, NJ(Zone 6b)

I would not bet my plants on the accuracy of this USDA Hardiness Zone map. I entered my ZIP Code for Nutley NJ 07110 and received the expected answer of USDA Zone 6b. In anticipation of a plant trade I am shipping out tomorrow, I then entered the ZIP code for Tipp City, Ohio 45371 and was informed that Tipp City is in USDA Hardiness Zone 1b. I was unaware that parts of Ohio have been moved to Alaska? Perhaps they are producing yet another Alaska reality show.

Use this map were care and a great deal of skepticism. The answer was so far off that it was obvious; if it had been off by only one USDA Hardiness Zone I might have overlooked the error. Is there an error reporting service for this not so accurate USDA Hardiness Zone? The USDA Hardiness Zone and PlantMaps Hardiness Zone are not always in agreement either; try Greenfield, Ohio 45123 for example.

Don’t feel bad, I have been programming computers for almost 50 years now any have this annoying habit of stumbling on these things. Perhaps this is why Alaska is missing as one DG member observed.

I reported the errors in an off topic BLOG post on the website.

I don't feel bad. I found this website, and happen to think it's a great resource. I input your Tipp City zip code and got a Zone 5b for it; the Greenfield zip code gave me a Zone 6a. They must have fixed it already - thanks for reporting it to them. If you need to report additional errors, here's the contact info: http://www.plantmaps.com/about.php

I just tested again using IE and FireFox and it is still returning the wrong results. Attached is the screen capture from FireFox for ZIP 45371. I will test again using another computer.

I see the difference between your results and mine. When I tested it I didn't open up the envelopes - I just looked at the colors of the maps. Based on the colors alone, the zones are correct. It looks to me like a database input error. Hopefully they'll fix it soon.

Wanaque, NJ(Zone 6b)

Faeden,

You are seeing the same USDA 1b Zone value then?

Mike

SF Bay Area, CA(Zone 9b)

No, I'm not. It's now showing (at least to me) a 5b Zone. If you tell me how to capture the info so I can post it here I will do so. I've never been able to figure it out on my own.

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9b)

faeden,
When you get the image on your screen that you want to capture, press the 'Print Screen" key on the Upper right hand corner of the keyboard. Then the image will be in the Clipboard Memory and you can then Paste it in your Photo editor (depends on the Photo editor that you have, maybe).
When it's in the Photo editor, save the picture to you Hard drive as a .jpg or .bmp file. Then choose that file when posting a reply.

SF Bay Area, CA(Zone 9b)

Got it. Unfortunately I only have a rudimentary photo program (Adobe Photoshop Starter Album 3.2) and I can't figure out how to past the image into it. I'll have to ask for help from the vendor. I'll get back to you.

SF Bay Area, CA(Zone 9b)

I asked Admin to help me, and I was able to use Microsoft's Paint program to get the image into a .jpg file. Here you go:
