I have tiny crocus' making thier appearances. No tulips yet. One brave lily has poked its head up, but it is on top of a hillock, nice and warm and dry.
Let's See New Lilies Sprouting!
that looks really good. I have a similar path but they used round flat rocks rather than pavers. Which would have been my choice. They were into the natural look which was okay, but they set them in pea gravel and when dirt and bark got into it, it looked yukky. So I dug up the entire path, removed the gravel, replaced the stones lifted by 1" gravel and then filled around, planting wooley thyme between. I have to give the thyme haircuts every so often so they don't over grow the stones, but you can walk on it and not hurt it.
I am saving some of the extra (turkey gravel) its not so much pea as really course small gravel. I will be planting iris soon and its nice for drainage.
I already had 4 stones so they wanted to match what I had.
Very nicely done! Congrats!
I have a bag of chicken grit that I want to spread around my plants that the slugs like. I heard they don't like to crawl over that sharp stuff. I will have to go to the rock quarry and see if they have sharply crushed gravel like your turkey grit. I don't have enough to protect all of my plants like hosta, dahlias, etc
maby the grits come graded chicken is smaller than turkey LOL
The walk looks great, Jo Ann. Well worth the investment.
Martagons erupting in Maine! In spite of the fact that Spring did not fully install here yet!
Mstella, I think you can use diatomaceous earth, and that will stop the slugs. I think you can get it easily.
I will google it. I have heard the word before but can't remember what it is. Thanks
Congrats Mainiac on your Martagons. I don't have any of those but they are certainly lovely.
Do they grow as tall as The Lily Garden says? 6-7'??? Amazing. Or is that the trumpets
Mine are around 5 feet. They arent in bright sun all day.
Plant files says 4-6 feet
I hope mine are that good. I have orienpets, a couple to trumpets, asiatics, orientals, ummm I think that is all.
Geez that is going to look spectacular when they are all blooming. So many lilies!
Jmorth, WOW! How long have your lilies been in that location? I haven't seen any sign of the 3 I have (only have 3, so far, boohoo) and mine sure don't look like that! Beautiful!! Little jealousy showing here! But inspiring! Will be gorgeous when they are all in bloom!
Mine aren't that much bigger, Jo Ann. We can enjoy what others have now and they can enjoy ours when we have blooms.
I guess that is one difference between my shrews and your voles. Mine don't seem to dig down. At least I don't think they do. I haven't seen much growth on my lilies except the chocolate ones that are native here.
Do you have any photos of chocolate lilies?
WOW I would love to see them.
They aren't too impressive but I will change computers and put a couple of pics here.
Interesting things in that spot,nice.
I had to look them up to see if they were a fritillaria, which they are. But look at some of the nicknames for them, LOL
"Skunk Lily, Dirty Diaper, Outhouse Lily, Indian Rice, Wild Rice, Northern Rice Root, and Rice Lily ..."
Very pretty!
Uh, yeah. Forgot to mention that. I have never smelled them so I don't see how they can be that bad. Maybe I just never got close enough. And I never cut them to take inside. I just wanted them because they are indigenous to our area and kind of unusual. Same reason I ordered a creepy looking jack in the pulpit. It is just different. Will go with my helleborus and blue poppies on the west side of the house; the mecenopsis get a snippet of hot afternoon sun for maybe an hour and then only indirect. The helleborus get no direct sun.
Gorgeous, jmorth! And love the chocolate, mstella! Wow, 30 days sure does make a difference, lol!
I will get a better picture in the next month or so. They bloom very early.
Anyone care to open the next thread? This one is getting long....thanks everyone for your contribution to the thread.
