8.9 earthquake followed by tsunami just hit Japan

(Zone 7a)

Pajonica please be okay and let us know how you and your family and friends are as soon as you can. And tell us how you think we can best help.

I know all our hearts go out to those affected by this disaster.

I was just thinking the same thing Karen.....was wondering how Jon was.
My brother lived in Japan off and on for over 20 years and he's trying very hard to contact his buddies. He said he has some reports from his military contacts and it's bad is what he was told. Prayers being said for Jon and everyone who's lives this touched, peace be with you.

Yes, Karen it's terrible !
Jon, are you save with your family ?

(Zone 7a)

Thank you, Celeste and Dany. I'll be checking in here for news of Jon and all our friends and family in and near Japan during the day.

I just heard about this from my husband, hopefully it did not go too far inland. My thoughts and prayers go out to Jon and his family and all of Japan.

Hopefully we will hear from Jon soon.

At 9:49 CST today on another website (Carpe Diem), Jon posted this:

"We were hit today by the most powerful quake, the house is damaged and my DW is stranded in Tokyo myself and the kids apart from being scared are issok. lots of damage I dont quite know how we will ever overcome this!"

He and his family are safe - I don't have words to say how grateful I am for that.

Apologies to admin for putting a link to a continuation of the thread where Jon posted - I'll remove it if you wish - http://cubits.org/cjr/thread/view/52274/

But am sending more prayers for everyone hurt in this awful tragedy.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Thank you Karen for that update! I don't know Jon well, just met him actually but my heart goes out to him and his family. May God Bless and keep him safe.

(Zone 7a)

Dee, am praying for friends and family you may have in Japan, too. If you can, would you post here to let us know how they are?

And to Gerris2/Joseph - prayers for the wellbeing of the Japanese in your circle.

(Zone 7a)

Thank you, Celeste. Am not finding words very easily right now.

Jon posted this earlier today (Around 11 am):

"We were hit today by the most powerful quake, the house is damaged and my DW is stranded in Tokyo myself and the kids apart from being scared are issok. lots of damage I dont quite know how we will ever overcome this!"

I am SOOOOO grateful that Jon and his family are okay so far. I only heard about this when I received an email from Antoinette. I'm still at work but on break and been watching the news videos on the internet. Makes my stomach just turn to see what the tsumani did! There are going to be a lot of fatalities! Just absolutely horrible!!! My prayers are going out for the people there and especially for our good friend, Jon!

I don't know yet how much damage his home sustained, but I am sure he will post more information over the next few days.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Oops! I didn't see the earlier post, Karen. Thanks for also finding that link. I knew Jon would try to let his cyber friends know that he was okay if he could. What a horrible disaster to strike Japan. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone affected by this chain of events.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

They have been hit by a second quake the reports are saying....6.6 this time.
I stamd corrected...an after shock or trembler as one report put it.

*sending positive thoughts to Jon & family*

Very coincidentally, the day before yesterday I was reading a post from Jon about the area being due for another "big one" here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1160571/?hl=earthquake

edit: Jon's somewhat prophetic post is on Feb. 28

It looks like Jon was right, only he probably didn't know at the time exactly how right he was.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

I received this email from Jon,

"We have sustained major damage to the house and I have been slightly
injured while being thrown about 15 feet Kids OK but scared.
thanks Becky. This is a real disaster for Japan still unfolding"

I am VERY concerned for him and his family's welfare. I remember all too well what happened in 2004 after Florida's east coast was hit by two hurricanes. We were lucky that help arrived quickly and the damage was limited to our state and not our entire country.

My two current concerns for him and his family:

1) A safe place for them to stay. I would imagine that most homes sustained pretty severe structural damage. There will be aftershocks going on for days and weeks even.

2) Food and clean water shortages.

I know the USA is sending in emergency supplies and 5 naval ships. As are many other countries! Two of which are already there. But Japan has a huge population. Japan's infrastructure has come to a halt because of this natural disaster. What comes to mind is "Haiti" and what happened there. They have a lot more resources than Haiti, but it's probably going to get worse there before things get better.

I hope that we are able to do something financially tangible to help Jon in the very near future. In the meantime, I think prayers and encouragement are the best we can do at this moment. I'm personally wrapping him and his precious family in prayers!

I am praying that this doesn't end up like Katrina; with devastation still firmly in place 6 years afterwards. He has worked so hard on his house and I am sad that it is so damaged.

Praying that he heals fast and that his DW can rejoin the family quickly.

Jon, we are praying for you and everyone there to find shelter and food and help in whatever ways you all need. We are praying for your family to be reunited and kept in safety. Prayers for your healing from being hurt. Prayers for the emotional healing you all will need. I thank God for your lives that were spared and for help on the way to bring you food. God Bless you all.

What devastating news. Seeing all the photos of Japan is very upsetting. Prayers go out to Jon and all our DG friends who were affected by the earthquake and tsunami. So sad.

Jon posted on the other site and he is OK and in good spirits. Prayers going on here too for him and his family and all the people in Japan or other countries hit by the tsunami.

Jon posted that electricity is back on as is the gas. Water main was broken during the earthquake, so hopefully that will be repaired soon and they'll have clean running water once again!

Hopefully the nuke reactors will be cooled down so that there won't be another issue for the people of Japan to worry about. Watching the news, it is quite unbelievable!

I've also heard on the news that Hawaii had some shoreline damage from the tsunami. Anyone heard any news about that?

(Zone 7a)

Thanks, everyone, for the updates. I hope they get clean water asap.

Mesilla Park, NM

Me too Karen, we were out of water for two weeks here last month and it was a headache.

(Zone 7a)

A, I just can't imagine the magnitude of challenges over there right now - am at a loss for words.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I got my MG seeds from Japan approx. 2 days after the quake. I shook when I realized that these come from a place that may be no more. I have since emailed the person I bought them from and was astounished to recieve a reply. They are fine and thanked us for their prayers. Seems they had recieved alot of emails of concern. :)
Here are the lovely packages.....

Pixie, those are beautiful!
Sending prayers for Jon and all Japanese.

(Zone 7a)

Pixie, this forum, and morning glory lovers elsewhere are so indebted to Japan's involvement in their history. Dany wrote a wonderful thread about how Japan shaped the Ipomoeas nil, purpurea & youjiro as we know them today here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1072729/ . I know I need to read it again, and those who haven't will love it too.

Dany, I entered your thread on "Morning Glories: 219 genes make the difference" in the MG forum sticky index under BREEDING like this:

"-- A history how Japan bred Ipomoea nil and guided its mutations - http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1072729/

Is that okay with you, or would you prefer a different wording? It's such a great homage to Japan's spectacular achievements with this flower.

Adinamiti, am also continuing sending prayers to Jon and Japan. To anyone reading this, Jon is posting on Adinamiti's thread here, where many of his friends - lurker and vocal - are hanging in there with him: http://cubits.org/cjr/thread/view/52683/ . So far he and his family are safe and sound, but some basic amenities of day-to-day living are still very iffy, to say the least.

Karen

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Karen - Glad you added Dany's information to the Sticky thread! :-)

Jon's home also had some considerable damage as did the roads in his neighborhood. The water shortage is going to be a problem because he has two little boys. I hope they can get supplies. I know he said that the food stores are starting to re-stock their shelves now. Thank goodness. He does have electricity too. It is very cold there, so that is another challenge on top of the reactor issues. Prayers are greatly appreciated by Jon and his family!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Thank you Karen for the info :)
Still praying for Jon, family and all those in need.

Balotesti, Romania(Zone 5a)

Karen, thanks for posting the link here for everyone to see. Jon has too much on his mind right now to visit all the threads, but I'm sure he will do that when things will settle down.
Anyone who wants to make donations to Jon, please check on the cubit link Karen posted above or just Dmail Becky.
Great threads , thanks Dany.
Prayers continue for Jon and all the people in Japan.

Tokyo, Japan(Zone 10a)

Hi ya'll I only just found this thread, I thank you all for you kindness and prayers for my family and country.
Things are slowly improving as time goes by, apart from the nuclear reactors that is a dimension to this disaster still unfolding.

Jon

(Zone 7a)

Jon, we love you and you are more than welcome. Our hopes and prayers are with you and Japan.

We are following Adinamiti's thread so that you don't have to post everywhere, including here, but appreciate your visit here during this impossibly difficult time anyway.

I am biting my tongue about certain aspects of the energy industry. With regard to accidents both past and waiting to happen, like putting at least one nuclear reactor on top of the San Andreas fault - it seems to me, in my opinion, that keeping costs down was one reason that relevant historical and scientific considerations were excluded from the decision-making process that ultimately chose the lower risk-management model after which to build certain reactors. I think it's the nature of systems with vested interests (especially heirarchical ones) to be deaf to voices/ideas they find inconvenient to hear. "Risk management" my foot - logic at its most fluid.

Hoping and praying that the reactor situations resolve positively,
Karen

My dear Karen, you are so right this nuclear disaster could have happened just about anywhere, lessons to be learned as I'm quite sure they will be. Man can never build anything that nature can't destroy!

Thank you my friend.
