Off Topic - Gas Prices

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Yeah... it was so fun... I think I've read the canning and freezing forum through and through, along with the recipes forum.. so it was nice to have fresh ideas!

OMG Regular unleaded $4.15 Can I scream now?

Saint Louis, MO(Zone 6a)

The news was talking about $5 a gallon in CA this summer. Aaaaaaaaaaargh! This will surely raise the cost of produce at the grocery store... glad we're planting veggies.

Gas is now $3.89 here. Cameras at virtually all the pumps, pre-pay, and No Pay No License (6 month suspension) have pretty much eliminated gas theft at the pump, but siphoning thefts are increasing. Neighbors in a lot of areas are banding together by parking together and taking turns watching over the collectively parked vehicles. St. Louis area taxicab fuel surcharge went up from $1 to $2 per trip at the beginning of April.

Fowlerville, MI(Zone 5b)

I saw $4.02 today here in Michigan. :(

Richmond, TX

Gas $3.73, Diesel $3.89 here.

Kingman, AZ(Zone 7a)

Greythumb, I actually live in the Arizona Desert, there are no pastures of green grass (OH how I would love to see those again) we have pastures of Tumbleweeds.. Scored some what some call Cow hay, it is bottom bales or they have small patches of mold on the outsides for 10 a bale. The chickens and other assorted wildlife here get the yucky parts, the horses get the rest. So far I have been lucky enough to not get very much mold.
I am moving this weekend to another ranch that is way out and they can free range that will help..

Green I am loving the sustainable forum as well..

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

I don't know what we will do if it gets to $5. I am sure it will not be long if this keeps up.. I was shocked that the cheap place was at $4.15 today.. I can't imagine what produce is gonna cost!! Even the Farmer's Markets will be high.. Wow....

Kingman, AZ(Zone 7a)

Heck if I could stable my horse by my job, I would ride in...

Richmond, TX

Miss J post pictures of your new place when you get moved. Sounds like more work!

Southern NJ, United States(Zone 7a)

MissJestr, I love the sustainable forum, too. It's just not very active!

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

I go to Gasbuddy.com and check on gas prices everytime I need to fill Up. Since we dont have that many gas stations in my tiny little town of Eatonton, I usually have to take whats offered. But if I have to go out of town The gas Buddy site really helps out with deciding where to fill up!

Fowlerville, MI(Zone 5b)

Eufaula, Gasbuddy.com is a huge help!! Thanks for sharing! I think I'll get the phone app so I can use it on the road!

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Glad I Could help!

Kingman, AZ(Zone 7a)

Pork, I posted pictures on the eggs to barter of the front porch... LOL
Aw heck I just went off topic... http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1172823/

Here's another off topic. It's about grain, so I'll use the excuse it's about chicken feed. :) They say Soros is buying up all the grain elevators. Google it for more info.

ZZ, Michigan is about to catch up with California...... It's $4.09 here today. That's just NUTS! >:-[

How high will it get before everything shuts down?

(Zone 5b)

Last night regular gas was $3.89. This morning it shot up to $4.15. SHEESH!

Fowlerville, MI(Zone 5b)

We also hit $4.15 yesterday! :-(

Southern NJ, United States(Zone 7a)

I got some at $3.73 today but that was the cheapest I saw anywhere. At other stations it was more like $3.79. Not a huge difference, but since I was driving around anyway I went for it.

(Zone 6b)

It is around that price here too. I think $3.79.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Still holding at $4.19 here.. guess that makes us the losers. LOL

Saint Louis, MO(Zone 6a)

$3.82 for gas and diesel at one place.
$3.89 for gas and $3.84 for diesel at another place.
Minimum of 10 gallons per week X 4.3 weeks per month = $164.26 per month.

$68.00 a month for unlimited rides on mass transit. Great as long as it goes where you need to go when you need to go there, and you're not in a hurry. And your dog isn't with you.

Free unlimited rides on a bicycle. Also great, so long as the human doesn't run out of steam or need to get somewhere in a hurry. Some dogs are OK with running alongside a bike or riding in a carrier on the bike.

Free unlimited walking, Rollerblading, skateboarding, etc. Most dogs love a good walk.

Fowlerville, MI(Zone 5b)

It was $4.15 yesterday and now it's $4.19 today! What happened over night that made it jump? Grrrrrrr.....

(Zone 5b)

GrayThumb, great ideas LOL, but only if you don't live in the middle of no where (mass transit here is hitch hiking !) We not only have to not haul the dog(s), but kids, groceries, feed. None of which are close. So we try to combine trips to conserve gas. Now that there is a government task force to tell us why the price has gone up so much, (DUH) I suppose we can expect prices to go even higher.

Saint Louis, MO(Zone 6a)

The rediculously high gas prices may lead some with a specific old bumper sticker to have the first and last options for hitchhikers deleted: "*** gas or *****... no one rides for free."

I agree with the issue of no reasonable alternative to vehicles (except maybe horse or oxen-drawn carts/buggies) in rural areas. The lack of services, including transportation and state-of-the art communication (as compared to urban areas), lack of school choices, and few/no jobs, has led to some leaders saying that rural areas are becoming and will be the new ghettos.

I think it behooves us to prevent this from happening instead of trying to fix it later.

Erwin, TN(Zone 7a)

we need our stills back, --

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Hm, Granny Eufaula may be lookin for a motorcycle for the summer! or .... a goat cart, since we cant drive a GO-cart on the high way!! LOL!!

(Zone 5b)

For some odd reason gas dropped over night, back down to $3.99. I guess they were checking to see if our hearts were still beating? I filled up the tank.

This area has great schools, state of the art communications. We pay more than most counties in property taxes for schools. There is NO mass transit, however, I think if there were it would be used very little. It's still a small community where neighbors help each other.

I drive an SUV, out of necessity. Snow & ice cover roads, we live on a paved lane that is slippery and hazzardous during the winter. Need that 4 wheel drive! I also haul all my garden & animal stuff in it. No need for a second, older car. We live here by choice and those are some of the pitfalls (expenses) of not living in the "city." When we lived in the city the lots were huge, roads plowed on a regular basis, but I wasnt' comfortable sitting outside in my PJ's drinking coffee, chickens weren't allowed, even the garden size was limited, as were most things we enjoyed. Even though the neighbors were a hundred yards away it still felt like a rat living in a cage. I just cut back on other things so we have the Peace of living outside of the city limits.

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Annie You are a girl after my own heart!!! Sitting on my front steps this morning in my PJs , enjoying my coffee, I thought what a beautiful and quiet day, and I sure could not do that in the city!

(Zone 5b)

LOL, yup, there is nothing like the peace of morning surrounded by the 2 dogs and chickens and a great cup of hot coffee with vanilla cream in it.

Saint Louis, MO(Zone 6a)

It's nice having the freedom of space and unincorporation, with fresh air, quiet, and lots of pretty birds, plants, and animals.

It's also nice having at least a few of the amenities (cultural attractions, specialized medical, universities, and mass transit) of a major metro area.

It's hard finding a place that is both, and most of those that I've found are very expensive.

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

I m lucky I guess, I live 10 miles from our tiny town , but it has all the amenities that one would need or want, including a tech college.
But I live right adjacent to the Oconee forest on wooded property , so nature is my home and I love it! It still takes gas to get to work though and that stinks right now!

Fowlerville, MI(Zone 5b)

Annie, why did your gas go down and here we've had 3 days of gas hikes? Does that make any sense?? We've gone $4.15, $4.19, and $4.29 yesterday.

PS: I love a little coffee with my vanilla cream! ;) lol

(Zone 5b)

Glenda, I have no clue! It dropped another penny today too. It was a shock to see it go up so much in one day and then drop the next. They're probably training us to be grateful to have gas under $4 a gallon, or preparing us to pay close to $5, which is predicted by mid summer. Either way, I sure don't like it.

PJ's, dogs, chickens, peace and vanilla cream in coffee, what a perfect morning!

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

ours came back down to 3.59 woo hoo but probably won't stay that way long

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

$3.84 this morning

(Zone 5b)

Back up to $4.19 today, what the heck?

Erwin, TN(Zone 7a)

the high prices may help the oil companys [exon reported record earnings] but-- the rest of us are spending less on everything, and that is making more companys that have employees close, or lay off, - - making the economy even worse-- back up to 3.89 in town, and 3.98 out here in the sticks, -- worked on my old Ford, -- the gas milage has improved, -- from 10 to 11.5 [big deal] still costs $200/week to go to work-

Saint Louis, MO(Zone 6a)

Gas was $1.84 to $2.14 a gallon and diesel was $1.89 to $4.25 a gallon this morning.

In an effort to reduce department gas costs, some police departments are having officers do less patrolling... sit in one place and respond to calls only. So much for preventive patrol... sooner or later our insurance premiums will go up because crime will go up.

Some other police departments are telling officers to write more tickets because the jurisdiction needs the revenue. No outright ticket quotas though, which are illegal. So much for enforcing traffic for the sake of improving public safey.

Some pilice deparments are doubling up officers, especially rookies, so there are fewer cars on the road gulping gas and fewer second cars responding to calls needing two officers.

Some police departments have reduced maximum speeds permitted on lights-and-sirens responses to calls for service. Slower speeds reduce gas consumption, but improve the criminal's chances of escape.

Some police departments have eliminated prisoner pick-ups from other departments except for those with felony warrants. Those that never come to court will figure this out pretty fast and if they do go to court or pay their fines, they may well only go to court or pay on their fines in the jurisidictions that will come and get them when they get arrested. End result: traffic and misdemeanor fines won't get paid and the jurisdicion will spend more money maintaining warrants that will never be answered until it can afford the gas to pick up those individuals wih warrants.

Some departments have reduced less/non- essential programs so the money can be spent on gas.

Joplin, MO(Zone 6b)

Gas is 3.89 a gal & diesel is 3.99 a gal here... killing us. took me $10 in gasoline just to go to the bank, post office, our shop, & take my DH to & from work last Friday... and I do that EVERY day. rumor is it will hit $4 a gal by July here. Nothing we can do.... I'm already driving the least amount i can now. We live 13 miles from the school... we have to be there 3 times this week for school activities we can't make the kids miss due to dealing with my husband's exwife... (otherwise they'd skip them) it will cost us an extra tank of gas just to do that.($75) plus my husband is required to attend bc i can't be around the exwife... and that means 3 days of half paychecks since he works evenings. When i was in school they never backed things up like that in one weeks time... or asked for so much money from the kids for school related projects. It seems like every time we turn around they are demanding money for something. Thankfully only 2 of the kids are in school.

(Zone 6b)

Sorry Grey. Hope things get better for your family soon.
