Off Topic - Gas Prices

(Zone 5b)

Sorry, LFJ, I was just kidding around and wasn't very clear. Gas & electricity together sounds dangerous. By white coats I meant Paramedics. :-)

(Zone 6b)

Didn't you guys see the cars that run on water?

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

I saw something on TV about cars running on recycled cooking oil

(Zone 6b)

I was going to tell you how to do it, but now I'm not. :P

(Zone 5b)

I did read that. Come on LFJ, your water secret is safe with me!

My work truck [F250] is very heavy, loaded with tools, compressor, generator, and lots of junk, --it is about 8000 lbs, -- it gets about 10 -11 mpg in town, -- I have a old Chev pickup, with a 350 engine, I run around with on weekends, or when ever I can leave the big truck home, -- it gets about 17 mpg city, and 20, to 22 on the highway, -- but the bed of the Chevy is empty unless I am hauling some feed, or what-ever, --
You can build the Hydrogen making equip for your car with stuff from the hardware store, and pool supply , -- I know 2 people who have done it, -- I know one[sort of, -he sometimes hangs out at the local general store] that bought one on the internet and said it worked great, --
I put a water vapor injector on my work truck, -it added about 3/4, to 1 MPG

Ferndale, WA

I agree digger, he little ford ranger six or even four cylinder is a great little truck. No heavy hauling but heck most of us don't usually haul heavy stuff anyway. They are good trucks, I had a little toyota tacoma. four cylinder and I put overload springs on it and was amazed what I could haul. It got around thirty mpg. Nothing fancy but great little truck...Hay

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Oh yeah. My little Ford Explorer Sport track gets pretty good mileage. I can go 300 miles on a tank of gas , with a little to spare. But with the price of gas getting higher and higher Its still expensive. So my trips will be cut short this year. Digger we are still "On" though!

Dahlonega, GA

OOfie, we'll do all the running around in the van .
If I could find another Chevette ,4 cylinder, I'd mortgage my only child to buy it . I got 38 mpg and drove the thing over 200thousand miles with only repairs, a wheel Bering out that the fix ended up costing an axel ,(chev dealer ate that ), A gear shift that came out once in awhile , ( I learned how to put it back with needle nosed pliers and screwdriver ) A timing band change , (40 bucks) on the hiway . I was stupid and probably could have driven that "puddle jumper" another 200 thousand , but that was the shift time from leaded to unleaded gas and a little tube was being sold to use the larger leaded gas hose to put the cheaper leaded gas in the tank . Didn't realize the damage to my engine that would result . Blew the engine and couldn't find a replacement . Sold my baby for 500.00 dollars and cried ever since.I traded in a Ford station wagon I bought from a military man that was going overseas for 300.00 , drove it for two years and found my baby at a dealership for 1200.00 .Got 500.00 for the Ford and ended up paying750.00 total for my baby that only had 1200 miles on it . The man that had bought it first , told me it wasn't air conditioned was the reason he traded it back .Found out later , the dealership was afraid of the little bitty cars and sold it to me cheap to get it off the lot .I lived in Monroe , La . and drove to west Texas and the panhandle to call on farmers and ranchers for three years in that baby , so 38 mpg was a real plus for my profit .1976 Chevette Scooter . Best car I ever had . General Motors wouldn't have gone broke if they had a few little cars on the line in the 90's and early 2000's

(Zone 5b)

Gas today: $3.59 a gallon. I have a friend wfho works at the station, she said she was just just getting ready to change the price to $3.68. Before I drove away it had been changed. My car was on fumes when I filled up so, wow, it was a lot of $$ .

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

$4.05 at the Chevron...

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Dropped here this weekend from $3.49 to $3.34. BIG surprise!

Southern NJ, United States(Zone 7a)

I got gas last night at our local station for $3.35, but this morning I had to drive through an area that usually has good prices, and all three stations at the intersection had it for $3.25. I wish I'd waited, but I was very low and I didn't expect that much of a difference!

Ferndale, WA

The station across from SeaTac airport is now at 5.03, They are sticking it to the car rental people and of course taking advantage of those who rent cars...Makes me sick that they get away with it...Gas here for us is $3.89 and I live one mile from the Cherry Point Refinery...OUCH...Hay

Bridgewater, ME

It dropped her to,from 3.74 to 3,71

Erwin, TN(Zone 7a)

the least I have seen here is 349.9, --most are 457, and worse, --

(Zone 5b)

It's still 3.59 here. I can't believe the Sea tac airport is allowed to price gouge like that!

(Zone 6b)

If they don't bring the prices down for summer, some people won't go on vacation. That's not good for the economy in some areas that depend on tourists.

Ferndale, WA

It's not the SeaTac airport, it's the station accross the street, and I agree. That type of price gouging should never be allowed. The do it because the rental car companies at the Airport all fill up there and pass the bill on to the ones that rent the car. I think there is a law against it, but like so many laws they are just ignored and when the do go after them they just slap their hand and say don't do that. Just like the Politicians...Makes me angry.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Gas went down a few cents here.. It was only $3.95 today! whoppeee

Well, that was supposed to be sarcastic.,. just doesn't work on email, so you can put the smarty pants attitude voice on it..

Fowlerville, MI(Zone 5b)

They just said on the news that the price of gas went up [again] last night because of our actions with Libya. .....I need to fill up my Ford Expedition today too. .....Poo. >:-[

Joplin, MO(Zone 6b)

its $3.56 & holding for the last 3 weeks here.. Diesel is nasty to buy all over tho. with 5 over the road semi's... we are hurting bad when it comes to buying diesel.

Bridgewater, ME

3.76 here now

Richmond, TX

Diesel $3.79 here.

Ferndale, WA

Thinking of these gas prices, I had to laugh at those who said it went up due to our meager enterprise in Libya. Also due to the fact that so many Middle East Countries seem to hate the U.S.A, I think we should withhold all monies, food, and tactical support from all of those Arab Nations the same way they withhold gas supplies from us, and we should drill off the Coast, and Anwar. We have enough oil to last this country for a hundred years. If we can't get our act together by then, then we deserve to go down the toilet...Just my "HUMBLE" opinion...Then we can negotiate from a point of strength, instead of utter stupidity...Hay

Dahlonega, GA

Hay , I love your attitude , and agree.
Hope this doesn't come under politics , my bad .

(Zone 5b)

$3.54 a gallon here. I don't even look at diesel prices. Hay, I agree with you!!

Southern NJ, United States(Zone 7a)

We just got gas for $3.31. That's down from the previous high of $3.35. But oil is a non-renewable resource and there's only so much of it; I'd like to save at least some for uses other than burning it up in engines. Who knows what we might find it capable of being turned into down the line, so it would be good to have some left.

We're looking into going solar for our house.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

I agree with Haystack! This is ridiculous.

Joplin, MO(Zone 6b)

diesel is 3.89 here.. which doesn't seem so bad... till your buying roughly 600 gallons at a time.... for each truck. Definitely better than the 5.09 it got to a few years ago.

@greenhouse_gal... we looked at Solar for our house as well.. found out to go off grid in our area.. which would be awesome for a new family starting out... would cost us $50k to $80k UPFRONT for a 2000 sq ft house... to buy, install & be able to start running it immediately. NOT something we can afford even with two decent paying jobs. $30k just to stay on grid but to install solar. A contractor told me to consider solar and wind power together so one would cover the downtime on each system like no wind or no sun for a few days plus it came out a bit cheaper to install. We are buying a 1000 sq ft house now.. will reprice for a smaller system but I don't foresee us being capable of buying at the cost they are. which hurts.. bc we intended on going totally off grid on everything but fuel for the car.

Southern NJ, United States(Zone 7a)

greykyttyn, so far the solar reps we've talked to say that you can't use the solar if the grid is down, which seems silly. They say it's because of dangers to the linemen if they're working on a pole and expect it to be dead, but others have said that there are switches they can use, or a transfer setup at the house. We have a generator that we use now when the grid is down, and no one seems worried about that power going out into the grid. It uses LP gas and we figured that we could supplement that with solar power in the event that the grid was down for a couple of days and the sun was shining. I think the major cost of being able to go off-grid is the batteries you'd need to store the energy; we don't want to get into that, just use the solar energy when it's available. Interesting to think about solar and wind together. I was watching Househunters International and a couple was looking at real estate on an island off New Zealand where there were no utilities, and everyone used either wind or sun.

Joplin, MO(Zone 6b)

the batteries were going to cost us about $1600 each & we only needed 3. So unfortunately up here that wasn't the major cost factor. we can use the solar even if the grid is down there would just be a switch to flip till the grid comes back up. We do have to warn about generators being hooked up when the grid goes down. If you install an automated back up generator you MUST tell the electric company here. A lineman was killed by one causing feed back when he didn't know the house had one during one of our ice storms.

gasoline came down to $3.39 YIPPIE... only cost me $68 to fill up. Starting to wonder if the cost of gas is going to derail my plans to go rummage saleing this weekend.

Southern NJ, United States(Zone 7a)

I figured there was a switch, since there's an automatic switch on our generator. We don't have to do anything; it just goes on automatically when the generator kicks in. That's not that much for the batteries.

Could you point me toward something online that says that you can use solar even if the grid is down? I'd love to be able to show it to the people who say it's not doable.

Not sure why gas is coming down but it's slightly lower here, too. Maybe threats of investigations into price-gouging? Or fears thereof?

Joplin, MO(Zone 6b)

i don't have a reference online.. it was the companies at our Home Show in Feb that said there was a switch so it wouldn't cause feed back that you'd have to call & tell them before you switched it back on. but when the grid went down the switch would automatically flip. you just have to return it to the proper setting after the grid came back up. my basic understanding of it was that it was a kill switch that cut power in the line from the house to the pole, like a breaker... me being paranoid would want to get a call from the power company OR have an outside switch they could use just in case.. but then I've been electrocuted & have a strong respect for it and what it can accidentally do. I'd want every safe guard possible.

What's sad is I can remember paying $1.15 a gallon when i started driving.. and it had just skyrocketed then... bc a couple weeks prior to me getting my permit.. gas was $.89 a gallon. the prices going up then... remind me of now. It didn't stop till it got to $1.99 then hovered there a while.. then it jumped again.

Southern NJ, United States(Zone 7a)

Greykyttyn, I'm old enough to remember paying 25¢/gallon when I got my first car, a little blue Corvair.

Our generator switch comes on automatically; we don't have to think about it at all.

(Zone 5b)

My sister called and said gas just jumped 30 cents a gallon over night! I haven't been out yet today to see it for myself but will soon. Yikes! I need to get gas today too. Am taking my dogs to the Dog Wash this morning for a bath so I'll pass the gas station on the way.

Joplin, MO(Zone 6b)

we filled up last night... $71for a tank... bc i was so far on empty we had only fumes left. that's a weeks worth of grocceries!

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

$3.34 last Friday yesterday $3.49, were doing the bouncy bouncy here again. Just trying to figure when to buy is the trick!

(Zone 5b)

I need gas! It did go up but not 30 cents a gallon like my sister said, wonder when she was out of the house last LOL However, it did go up 11 cents. SHEETS gas station has a new deal, get their store card (it's not a credit card, more like a grocery store card), sign up on line, and they send you a coupon to print off that gives you a one time deal of 99 cents off a gallon, for up to 30 gallons. The offer expires in a week or so.

Even when the prices bounces a tiny bit low, it's still way to high!

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Still $3.95 here.. :(
