CLOSED: Corkscrew Willow starts

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Wow Kathy! My box came a bit ago. That was some serious pruning. LOL I re-cut some of them and stuffed a huge vase. I can't wait to get them rooted and into the ground. They are gorgeous! Thank you for your generosity!

Pearisburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Glad everyone seems happy with the shipments. Can't wait to see who has roots first. It won't take long. I had some cuttings that were in the yard from days ago. I picked up a few and put in a vase and they are starting to leaf in 3 days! No roots yet but it won't be long.

Michele,
Good to cut the ends to get a fresh start. I didn't pack the cuttings in bags/water because they really can lay cut in my yard for days and by the time I start to clean up the mess I will find a few nice pieces I missed and stick them in water and they root.

Remember - make willow water!!!

Pearisburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Have I missed anyone? Seems like I have :(

Seymour, IN(Zone 5b)

I have roots and leaves coming out already! Will willow water "keep" in a sealed jar? Thanks so very much again for all the cuttings. Lou

Clarksville, TN(Zone 7a)

Same here!! Just noticed this morning. ^_^

Pearisburg, VA(Zone 7a)

I told ya !!! It's one amazing plant. Just think what the willow water will do - it's higher in horemones or whatever it is called that make things root better than weeping willow. These trees will actually have limbs that are touching each other and they will molt into one. I'll try to get a picture of this for you.

cut branches from willow, not more than 2 inches in diameter, and a few inches long (short enough they would easily fit into a large pot). put them in an old kettle covered with water, and simmered them on the stove. Then cooled, drained off the remaining liquid, and put that into a clean lidded gallon container for storage.

The plant you want to root should be left in a jar of willow water overnight, then inserted into the rooting medium and kept moist.

I actually just water my new babies that have been dipped in powder root hormone with willow water. It will stay pretty fresh if the water is kept cool or at least not 80 degrees.

I would not use your cuttings for willow water until your tree is large enough for more cuttings which for most of you would be July. You will be amazed at your willows.

I have a dumb question. I thought that DG had someplace to leave feedback for a sender. I can't find it and I wanted to leave you GREAT FEEDBACK. Thanks, Lou

Gardiner, ME(Zone 5a)

Shukks,missed reading this.
would they do well here in zone 5 ?

Kathy it is SNOWING here TODAY !!! ...suppose to get 6-12 inches. What a April fools joke :-)

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

I wish I would not have missed this too.

Pearisburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Girls I can send you willows for shipping. They should do well in any zone. It was blowing snow yesterday - just tiny crazy flakes. High wind warning today and it was sleeting a moment ago - lasted less than 3 minutes. Those 78 degree days spoiled me. I need to get my Palatine roses in the ground, lucky for me I dug 2 holes while it was warm so they are ready for prep and planting. My yard needs mowing but that won't happen today unless things a lot. burrrrrrr

I can get your cuttings out soon. If anyone didn't have luck with theirs let me know, I'll send you more. Mine are doing great.

Kathy

Gardiner, ME(Zone 5a)

Kathy, how much postage should I sent you ?

Pearisburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Bridgette, wait until I get them ready. Won't be much.

Gardiner, ME(Zone 5a)

Sounds good.No hurry at all...get your roses in the ground first :-)....we had snow yesterday ...ALOT !

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

Thank you so much. I am with Eglantyne no hurry at all. Get your roses in the ground first.

Ranburne, AL(Zone 8b)

Harrison Valley, PA(Zone 5a)

I wanted to post awhile back after receiving the willow cuttings but was really, really sick...anyways, they rooted so well I couldn't believe it! Two people have strongly expressed how much they wanted some so being a nice person I shared...and shared and shared now I HAVE to learn to say NO! At least not right now lol! They wanted more than just a cutting each and I'm more than glad to do that.
Now I have a question, our temps went from one day of 70 degrees back to 50ish daytime and tonight supposed to be 37 for the next couple nights at least. Since these were outside before being sent to me and I have kept them inside to root, is it safe for them to be planted outside with these temps? Should I wait a little longer? I guess I could just take a cutting or two and do an experiment but they are all so beautiful and healthy...it would bother me alot if they died from the shock of the cold. I'm running out of room in the house because I cannot get my veggies outside yet and also have MANY other plants!

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

If you have any cuttings left, I'd like to get one. My sister has always wanted one and now that we own this property, I want to get one for her. Her birthday is June 21st. It would make a great birthday present for her. I can send postage also.

Pearisburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Bluesky I will send you more and if the friends want some ask them to pitch in for postage and I'll send you 20 or so. Won't be much really - but that way you can get something back. I wouldn't put them outside just yet. Maybe pot them and let them sit out on a warm day and let their roots adjust to dirt verses water. I normally just stick mine in the ground but I have lots more if they die.

Marti, I'll gladly send you a few cuttings. I'll let you and ALL others above know postage. I'll try to cut and ship today. You can mail me postage when you get the cuttings. Paypal takes to much in fees.

Kathy - and i'm in the address exchange. Make sure you are and if not DMAIL me your address.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Since you are not selling them, you can send paypal as a 'gift' and they will not take fees.

Pearisburg, VA(Zone 7a)

I thought about suggesting that, which I just learned. Either way is fine. Badseed - you need more willows?

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I think I'm good! I built 2 rooting shelves/tables for my greenhouse and mine are happily growing in there! I may need to think about potting them soon before they take over. :) Thank you for asking!

Harrison Valley, PA(Zone 5a)

shihtzumom, Thanks for helping me out but I will still have enough. There is one more person that is wanting some and I will give her a few and then it's cut off until they grow on their own. Thanks also for the advise, I will wait on planting. This weather pattern isn't looking very promising for spring here, it's staying 20-30 degrees under what it should be.

marti, I'm sorry I didn't get back with you on the cuttings last night. shihtzumom is wonderful with sharing and with her offer, thats the way to go! Mine have become to large I think to ship and with the roots....I don't know how I would box/ship it and if I did it wrong, I would really feel really crummy and wouldn't be able to send anymore, not for awhile anyways.

Pearisburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Marti, I'll send you cuttings, hopefully later today I can get fresh cuttings - I keep saying that but need to make a trip to take birdhouses to a nursery where they sell them for me.....then in the garden for mid 70s!!!

Kathy

Pearisburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Gardiner, ME(Zone 5a)

Let me go through the bags to see what I have left,ok ?

Kathy,
Happy Easter to you also and everyone else,
Brigitte

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Kathy, I think I told you I had mine from you and some others in vases then decided to move them to the rooting beds I built in my greenhouse. I get the itch to kick all the plants out of the house as soon as it warms up.... I was tugging on them the other day and not a single one would budge. LOL I guess I'm going to have to get a plastic shovel and dig them out and pot them.

I'll send you an email in a couple/few days about sending your sedums. They are all up now and I can see who's who. :) I may get sidetracked this weekend because of Easter so that is why I said a few days.

HAPPY EASTER ALL!

Pearisburg, VA(Zone 7a)

They root like crazy. I'll have to take a picture of a large limb that we cut off one tree and I stuck it in a trash can of water so when it's planted it will be a ready made tree.

Maybe the Easter Bunny will bring you a plastic shovel and bucket.............

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

LOL Of course you didn't tell us to toss them in a trash can. The latest in high tech plant propagation....hahahaha I've actually tosses them in the bog on my pond and had them root before. A gentleman on the Ohio forum said they root laying in his yard.

Strangely the Easter Bunny picked up a few buckets and shovels yesterday...We someone always end up with some type of useful container instead of baskets. :)

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

Karen, got my willow cuttings today. My sister is delighted and whats you to know how thankful she is for you generousity. Do I how you anything more for postage?

Pearisburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Marti,
Glad you and sister are pleased with the willows. Did you send postage already? I would need to check my paypal account to see if you sent it or not. Did I tell you the amount? I'll have to check but I will need postage to cover my expenses. I'll be in touch.
Kathy

shihtzumarley@verizon.net is my paypal info.
