Kyushu U seed coop?

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Hi Elizabeth! I hope you get a reply back from Kyushu University and they accept your application for seeds.

And I have certainly been praying for Japan. It's horrible what is going over there in some areas of the country. So much devastation. Our friend, Jon and his family, are still dealing with not only damage from the earthquakes (that they are still having tremors), but also issues with radioactive contamination. Japan has been dealt a very hard situation.

Elizabeth ... Congratulations on your avancement!

It would be nice to ask on the forum of Kyushu.
Other year in May and June was full of words of thanks for the seeds received - why not this year?
On the forum there will be at least an answer!

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Dany - I wasn't sure what you meant in your post. Are you saying that people aren't posting their thank you's for the seeds they've received this year? I wonder if KU is still sending out seeds since the earthquake, tsunami, and reactor disasters? Maybe they aren't sending out seeds this year so far?

Kyushu is the other side of Japan.
I think this year there has been no distribution, but why?
I think only on the forum there will be an answer.

Interesting. Thanks for the heads up on that, Dany. I just looked at their Main Bulletin Board. Here is the last post to the BB on 6/11/2001. I had to try to translate it using babel fish. This is the translation:

"As a partner of the interspecific hybrid, also it has tried to utilize Kenyan product [ipomea]. Now, that cream color of [maruba], it will introduce the Guinean product in the bridge, it is planned. It selected this cream color, from those which have the streak point of red. The Crown Prince 3 of the morning glory, ground color seems like the cream. Whether there is a common point."

I didn't see many posts from this year (2011). Puzzling.

It will be interesting to see if Elizabeth gets a response.

I tried to send them a message:

九州における種子のないディストリビューションか?なぜですか?

But the site tells me: error!
2 years ago it worked well - Ron had also sent an SOS!

Dany - Yes, it appears something is up. I wonder when all this started? I wonder if something happened to their seed stock and they are no longer sharing seeds with the public? Wasn't it last year (2010) that they changed their site rules to allow people to request seeds year round? Maybe we'll find out something soon.

Lalalala.... it is not my problem any more ..... lalala!
it worked
I can do the happy dance!
Coincidence now I get an email from Nicolas (Tokyo )....
After a 'Ping Pong' mail with the University of Kyushu I'll finally get my order of 20 rare varieties.
I do not know if I get exactly the ones I wanted but .....positive news!
It cost me 5660 yen (63 dollars) + 20% commission for Nicolas.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Dany - That's good news, indeed! Yeah ... act like you don't care and it works! LOL! I have a question for you ... how many seeds do they send of each cultivar (Q#)? Price is reasonable for 20 different cultivars even with the 20% for your buyer!

szarvas, Hungary

I gave a list of 20 cultivars as my favorite and 5 in the list of replacements.
The number of seed per cultivar is 5 minimum and more if a cultivar is not required.
All the cultivars selected are single flower, no cultivar bizzare.
I chose from list with pictures because the other list with written descriptions is untranslatable.
In fact they do what they want, when I receive them I will give the list.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Dany - Thanks for sharing that information! Sounds about right from I have read on the KU website, though I didn't know you could get quite a few different cultivars. I had thought it was only something like 5 -6 different cultivars per home gardener. Twenty (20) is a lot! That's awesome!!!

Is this the photo link of which Q#'s you chose from by the photos?

Or is there another photo link for making selections?

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Dany - I've seen the strain list, too! You are right though, that the list is hard to translate, so it's easier to just use the photo list.

I hope you get the ones you really wanted! :-)

Sad news,

I received an email from Kyushu University after 3 weeks of waiting telling me , "Sorry, we only ship seeds to Japan". However they were generous to send me a small sample of seed for free to South Korea. I guess the coop idea goes out the window. I will keep you updated on what I select and the resulting grow out.

Elizabeth - That was nice of KU to send you some sample seeds! I look forward to you growing them out and sharing photos with us! :-) I am impressed that they are allowing you to select what seeds you want. Too bad they don't do that for us in the USA. :-(

I found an old childhood friend living Japan! He is of Korean descent like me, but married a Japanese woman and is permanently living there so there is still hope! I just emailed him and he said that he would try to see what he could do. However, many of the links to the Q numbers here are not working anymore and I need help obtaining them for those interested. That is IF he follows through. I can't send them the .jpeg numbers so I'm wondering where people are getting the Q numbers besides the list that doesn't have any pictures. Anyone out there to help? We may be able to get this off the ground afterall.

Thanks Dany,

Did you have to write all the numbers including the zeros after the dash? For example: Q1234-0000.jpg or can I just write Q1234? Some of the cultivars have the same beginning Q number but has a mutant strain so there are numbers after the dash. How did you order? There also used to be a link that stated how many varieties and the cost somewhere on their page but I can't find it anymore. Can anyone help? My friend speaks and writes fluent Japanese since he's living there and has two kids with his Japanese wife. He is willing to see what he can do.

Sometime one number like this one : Q1234 is not enough to define a cultivar - sometimes other numbers are required.
I bought my 20, so I gave my list of 20 favorite and 10 as second choice.
I think we better wait for the 2011 crop to have a great choice. It is too late to plant this year!

Thanks Dany again for all your help. I'm still going to try putting in an order if possible since I grow indoors as well. If I am successful, I will post here for people interested in obtaining seed.
