photos forums: Changes

This gets a little technical... be warned. :) You don't have to read this unless you are simply interested in the gritty details of DG.

I finally got to a big item on my TODO: Fixing the photos forums.

Before, in order to post a picture, you had to make sure it was in JPG format, and that it had a ".jpg" extention. Additionally, you had to resize it to make it a good size for viewing.

Today I finished and uploaded the code that makes it much easier to submit photos. Starting now, you can post photos (this only applies to the forums currently) in JPG, GIF, or PNG format. Additionally, you no longer are required to have the ".jpg" extention on your files. The system isn't relying on that anymore to determine the file type.

Additionally, when you post to the forums, it will check the size of the picture. If the width is greater than 800, or the height is greater than 1000, it will automatically scale it down so that it finally appears smaller than 800x1000. This way, we'll avoid those massive files that folks accidentally sometimes upload.

Well, I'm breathing easier now that this is done. It makes the photos forums much easier to post pictures to now.

Excellent dave! Now I don't need to open all three of my photo editing programs to try and determine my photo size! Woo hoo! DG does it for me! *giggle*

YahOoooO!!!! Thank You! :) :) :) :) :) :)

Can I ask a 'dumb question' here? LOL How do people post more than one photo at a time, like collages? Is it saved somewhere else like that? There are times when I would like to post a few photos together, that I think would look nice, like a group, but would feel guilty to post them one after another. So, what's the secret?

Badseed, they use software on their computer to open all the images they want to combine, and then somehow they combine them into one image.

The method differs on how to do it, depending on which software you are using. Tim seems to be the champion of this technique. :)

Dave... What about JPEG files? It is a pain to have to convert my Mac JPEG files from Photoshop via another program to JPG files.

darius: Well... it should be fine. Can you give it a test try and see what happens? If it fails, I'll take a closer look.
