I'm having lots of fun with my PVC lightstand and learning about seed germination. Started on 2-6-2011. Had done almost no seed starting in the past. A lot of the seed I have came from the new member welcome packet from DG and have been sitting in my box for about 2 years. Some may not be the kind of plant I grow all the time but since I have the seed, might as well give it a try.
The following have germinated and seem to be doing very well:
Tomatoes - several different kinds
Red salvia
Old-fashioned vining petunias
Gaillardia Pulchella
Purple Giant Hyssop - database said it was slow to germinate. It came up in 4 days !!
Cosmos - very fast growing, tall and spindly. Not sure how to handle this.
Some action with the following but just not as vigorous:
A couple of pots of Lyre Leaf Sage have come up. Several haven't.
Black Prince Snapdragon - extremely tiny little shoots appearing.
Ordinary snapdragon - the same

What is sprouting at your house?
That looks great Glenna, Congratulations!!!
Josephine.
Oh I have Blue Fescue Grass, Cherokee Purple Tomato and garlic.
Looking good Glenna!
My dill is up and a yellow flower that did really well in a hanging basket one year. I just threw it in but have no clue as to what it is. Anyone recognize this one? DH bought it as a hanging basket in early spring and it bloomed until late summer. It bounced up quickly so it can go outside before long.
My dill got frozen during the last weather event. Maybe it'll bounce back. I also have LOTS of weeds sprouting at my house! LOL
Some Achemenes are sprouting they are overwintered in the attic and not taken out until they start to sprout Other than the usual tulips and Daffies ever thing is still in dormant stage ,,Don't think my garlic is going to comeback was just too cold for too long Right now am very jealous of Glenna's seed starting ...
Sheila, I wonder if your yellow things are melampodium.
Sunflowers, Basil and Roselle
Tomatoes (Amish Paste, Black Krim, Brandywine), calendula, and eggplant under the new growlight I gave myself for Christmas.
If the weather would stay like this...
Doesn't look like the photos in plantfiles for melampodium. This plant doesn't really have noticiable leaves like it does.
Pak Choi, Choi Sum, Tropical Radishes, and Purple tomatillo with so many more to list in the coming weeks.
Very good Dale, I planted some Asclepias viridis too but it is not up yet.
I found a seed pod under my Blue Crown evergreen passi and dried the seeds. I have one comming up from seed. Not that I have any problem finding suckers everywhere to dig, just wanted to try the seeds before I sent to someone along the way.
I have second leaves on my dill now, with the cowpen daisy, Snapdragon vine, and a couple other popping up. I haven't looked at my milk jug planting as yet, check them tomorrow.
I was out of town and got a late start this year on my seeds but as of today I have chamomille, basil, dill, parsley, 3 kinds of cosmos and marigolds, 2 kinds of morning glorys, moonflower, hycath bean vine, 3 kinds of Sunflowers, hibiscus, 3 kinds of gourd seeds, sugar snap peas, 4 kinds of ,zinnas, purple bells, yarrow, 2 kinds of columbine, forget me nots, cleome and gomphrena, so far..hopefully Ill get the rest started this weekend
blkraven2, are these planted as wintersowing or under lights? Sounds like a bumper crop!
Sheila, how is your cowpen growing...same question
My Fescue, Tomato, and tomatillo are under a brooding lamp with a 55 watt Full Spectrum medium base lamp and all the rest I listed as of now are outside in my homemade raised bed grow frames.
Anna....I have about sixteen different types of plants in pots under lights. Only those above are sprouting yet, I didn't get all planted until 2nd week in feb. I also have five milk jugs but not sure how they are doing. I did get all my seeds organized and made a list though.
Perko....I would love to see pictures of your frame. I have thought about doing something like that.

.I have them in what I call my mini green houses .I use the large clear storage boxes with lids. this is my 3rd yr using them like this and they work great . I use them cause after everything is in the ground I can stack and store them easily and dont have a gazillion milk jugs to store. I start my seeds in paper egg cartons I collect over the year then when the seedling gets to big for it I transplant that section of egg carton into a 2 in newspaper pot I make while watching TV.. that way I can just plant pot and all when its time to plant in the ground...I cant believe I just planted on Tuesday and already have stuff sprouting! I would have had more done but ran out of starting soil...
I use Pro-trays with web base and each have 50 nice 2" x 2.75" planting holes. I like the 50 trays cause I usually plant 50 seeds off each of my collected varieties like my Chile's from years past.
I may have to try your idea Catz. Seems to work out nice and neater than my trays.
I use the taller ones to allow for some tall growth but either way they work great!.. I should get a few more but am trying to make due with what I have.. seed starting is an addition but a good one!
Nice hoop frame perko! That reminds me of one I saw on DG before. Looked just like that but was off the ground on tables. Definately an option I need to consider next year. Thanks.
Catz you planted really early I think so I am way behind you. Nice looking mini-greenhouse pots. There used to be a video on dg where "the Dave" mad newspaper pots. I have so many small ones now, that I didn't need extras, but the idea of putting them right in the ground sounds good.
Hey do you guys use that little wooden newspaper pot maker device to make the paper pots?
Well...I've started seeds too although I'm now up in Missouri. I needed something to take my mind off of this cold! Lol...
Right now I have up:
morning glories
mexican sunflower
porterweed
monarda
purple basil
white texas star hibiscus
hollyhocks
And I've got much more to plant yet. These were all old seeds that I wanted to try before buying new ones.
By the way if anyone has milkweed seeds I would love some. My plants were killed last winter and so I couldn't collect seeds this past fall to bring with me.
:) Kim
You can receive free MILKWEED SEEDS from:

You could send a donation too, it is for a good cause.
I order from them every year
no I fold them by hand then staple the sides.. Im too cheap to spend the money on the wooden form although I do know you can use a tin can with the same results.. the squares fit better in the boxes anyway..I usually get about 32 pots in a storage box, sometimes more, depending on how big I make the pots
I agree with raven. I prefer to fold the square ones also. I think they are more sturdy than the round ones. jmho.
sheila~ i started one box in december 'cause i was impatient LOL the other boxes i started the middle of january. i saw the video of dave making the round ones, it's on you tube now.
My Echi 'Green Envy' popped up to say hello today.
blkraven2 so you plant the news pots along with the staples in the ground or do you remove the staples then plant?
I plant staples and all.. you're looking at maybe 4 staples per pot and they decompose just like the newspaper does..there are directions on the web on how to fold them so you dont have to use staples but they take longer to make and are futzy to deal with in MHO. However when I m looking at several hundred pots I need to make I follow the KISS rule...lol...
Gota love the KISS-Keep It Simple Stu pid
Here is the Dave's utube link if anyone is interested. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8qPAV-LDnM
KISS .. I agree.. my goal the last few years is to make things as simple as possible and not just gardening either.. makes life so much easier!
Hey blkraven2 look at my list an let me know if you would like to try anything I have. You are free to if you want.
thanks but Im going to pass this year... Ill have my hands full with what I have already. although I admit I give a way alot of what I start...my neighbors are already asking me if I will have extras and my response was well duh ! this is Ms Overkill.. of course!...lol. Im like my Daddy. His way of thinking was you planted some for you, some for the bugs, some for the birds, some for the little beasties and some to share..I know I have extras Ill be bringing to the Round Up..so if theres something on my list youd like speak up now!..lol.
speaking of the RU,.. any idea when its to be this year?
