Has anyone heard anything about a thistle shortage? My store has been out for three weeks. We are right in the middle of our Goldfinch season and the only thistle seem to be in socks.

Willis, TX(Zone 8b)

I saw this in another thread about the shortage...

Things do run out this time of year too with people feeding more and all the sales. The bad weather here has people buying up the nuts so there were no tree nuts at Wild Birds Unlimited last time I went.

Willis, TX(Zone 8b)

Oops. I didn't notice it was 2009.

I bought a 10 lb bag of thistle at the Home Depot last week at the usual price.

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 6b)

We have whiteout conditions this morning. I took a few shots at my bird feeder, but they give no idea of how many birds are actually trying to eat there!

Here's one more shot. I'm having mostly starlings and blackbirds. A few red-wing blackbirds, cardinals, bluejays, and snowbirds. I feel sorry for the poor things trying to make it in this weather.

Joeyramone, welcome! You're lucky to see the beautiful cardinals. Cute photo.

Lily, the red-headed is such a beauty!

Mrs Ed, lol, I'd love to send you some sun to warm the water for the beautiful geese. Poor babies, they should visit with their cousins here at this time of year.

Rose, I'd love to share our sun with you too!

Teddy, congrats on your "3" wps at once-that's awesome!

Thanks for answering me Hack.

Frank, sorry to hear about the shortage. I had to stop feeding the thistle when our stores were selling it for outrages prices on tiny little bags. Hope you can find some.

chicochi3, welcome. Your birds look frozen too-poor babies. Stay safe!

The Robins seem to be picky when it comes to the red berries on the trees. Guess there's just too many trees here.

Everybodys pics are great! Having trouble keeping squirrels off the suet cake, any advice? Here's my girl back again, she and her guy are frequent visitors here, they love to hang upside down on the feeder.

I bought some crushed red pepper, if I put some of that on the suet cake and mix it with the bird feed, will that discourage the squirrels?

They leave our suet alone & that has red pepper mixed in it. We have not had the cakes up for awhile as have not been to the bird feed store. So not up during the last heavy storms. However, it is advertised as keeping squirrels away.

Lakeview, OH

well, every web place that I have been to, says that crushed red pepper will discourage them, can't afford the suet cake that has it in it, so this is the next best thing. Will let you know how it works out.

Norman, OK

Great pics, duc. You have some good yard birds.

Another cold spell here. One degree this a.m. This kind of weather is really hard on the birds. Our waterfalls is keeping an ice free area around them and with the other ponds solid ice, it is a duck hole. I can watch them through the binocs, but they fly if I try to approach. Saw Pintails, shovelers, ring-necks, mallards, and a scaup out there yesterday during the blizzard.

A pic of one of our falls at daybreak. At 1 degree, steam was rising off all three ponds. Ice coating the foilage around the ponds.

The pair of collared doves is spending a lot of time here during the cold weather. They normally feed on the ground, but have been getting on the feeders now that snow is on the ground.

Teddy, I do hope you can figure something out with that suet-sorry I can't help with any info.

Poor Red, I do hope it warms up there for you and your birds. Yikes, and I was complaining about our 29 degree morning. Cute photos-love that pond scene with the steam.

Nanny, your cardinals are just beautiful.

Here's one of our juvenile Bald Eagles flying by me. I keep hoping one of these will be a golden, but no luck yet.

I really feel for the poor birds having to cope with all the snow and cold temps! Thank goodness for folks like you all that give them a helping hand..don't know what many of them would do without you help.

Duc...your pics are certainly refreshing with the gorgeous light...keep those cheery pics coming!

It was 20 below zero last night and due to the new snow the UPS guy couldn't deliver my worms!! Good grief...that put the situation into worry overload!! They should get delivered later today but the Bluebirds have had to make-do with home made suet and sunflower chips. They do not understand the new
feeding system and have been fluttering outside the kitchen window all day. Here is the male parking his beautiful self so I will be sure to see him!!

I've enjoying all your pics everyone.

Great pics everyone!!!

Burn, I'm envious of your Redpoll :)

I always wondered if there was a Woodpecker on either side of the log feeder and they both pecked so far into the suet on either side at the same time...if they would freak each other out when they pecked a hole to each other...LOLOLOLOL
The chances are slim to none of it happening, and even less that I actually caught the moment it happened, but it tickles my insides at the thought...HA!
